#How to Turn Your Law School Class Notes Into an Outline

Someone asked a very good question about our last post: 5 Things to Include in Your Law School Class Notes What do you do with your class notes when it s time to outline? If you ve taken useful notes, and broken them into usable chunks, do you even still need an outline?

Why You Still Need an Outline

So, here s the deal. Even if your class notes are really good, you still need to condense them. Why? Because you can t possibly memorize and use 100+ pages of information.

The goal of your outline (which might not be a traditional outline at all, and could be a collection of related study materials) is to consolidate everything.

Ideally, you want to move from 100+ pages of class notes to an outline of around 30 pages and then to a 1-2 page cheat sheet of some sort, which you can easily memorize (for open and closed book exams) and reference (if you have open book exam ... Read more »

#How Will Proposed Changes In Custody Laws Affect Divorcing Women Financially?

I’ve written before about alimony reform and how new laws eliminating lifelong alimony and reducing judicial discretion can pose real financial hardship to divorcing women. Unfortunately, there’s another legislative trend sweeping the nation that’s just as concerning. According to The Wall Street Journal. some 20 states are considering laws that would substantially change the way child custody is decided in divorce.

As with alimony reform, much of the proposed “shared parenting” legislation targets judicial discretion. Rather than evaluate individual cases based on their circumstances, judges will be strongly encouraged, or even mandated, to enact custody arrangements that are as close to 50-50 as possible. In some states, including Colorado, New York, and Washington, the proposed laws make that the mandatory default. To make a different arrangement, it must be proven that the child woul ... We have offices in UK, USA and Switzerland. Our office location will handle different partnership with the universities in different continents.

Online college degree programs have gained different and many criticisms for past few years. People are not really in favor with this kind of scenario because they were still into the traditional way of having classes. They believed that the traditional lectures are more effective and a lot better compared to online college degree programs. But in time the preference of what education must be suddenly changed. This is due to the fact that people are now living in a world wherein we are all busy and additional or further studies are least of our concerns.

However, we should somehow exert effort to improve ourselves and get a better career. In our present economy that looking for a fid job is quite difficult since there are new graduates with fresher minds, they are dynamic, got new ideas, and willing ... Read more »

Earning a master's degree generally requires one to three years of study after earning a bachelor's degree in the United States. Many colleges and universities offer master's degree programs in addition to undergraduate degrees.

There are a number of reasons to earn a master's degree. For the academically pure, earning a master's is merely an extension of following their passion for a certain field of study. Intellectual curiosity on a subject compels these students to go beyond a subject's surface and delve into it fully. To really know a subject inside and out has its advantages. If the topic is marketable, people might pay a lot of money for expert advice--which is another big reason why some choose to earn their master's. A great many law and business graduate students will readily admit that their major reason for earning a master's is to land a high paying job. For some students, earning a master's degree is just another stepping stone to earning a doctorate degree or ... Read more »

We ve all heard stories about children in other countries are turned into soldiers or made to work in sweat shops making garments for sale in the U.S. and other developed countries. These children work long hours with little or no pay and spend their nights hungry and cold only to return to work the next day.

Many people think they will help these children by refusing to buy clothing made by companies that employ young children. Our compassion leads us to believe that without buying such products, we can free these children of a life time of what can only be considered slavery. We cry out for Governments in such countries to pass child labor laws that will keep these children from being worked to death.

Have you ever stopped to think what this compassion may mean to these children? What the passing of child labor laws might do to them and their families? In some cases, the entire family is dependent on what these children make to survive. In others, the little additi ... Read more »

#IHL and human rights law

29-10-2010 Overview

International humanitarian law and international human rights law are two distinct but complementary bodies of law. They are both concerned with the protection of the life, health and dignity of individuals. IHL applies in armed conflict while human rights law applies at all times, in peace and in war.

Both international humanitarian law and human rights law apply in armed conflicts. The main difference in their application is that international human rights law allows a State to suspend a number of human rights if it faces asituation of emergency. IHL cannot be suspended (except as provided in Article 5 to the Fourth Geneva Convention).

However, a State cannot suspend or waive certain fundamental rights that must be respected in all circumstances. These include the right to life, the prohibition of torture and inhuman punishment or treatment, the outlawing of slavery or servitude, the principle of legality and ... Read more »

Some people thrive on change but most of us, especially the fixed astrological signs, Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus, the last being my sun sign, are not too sure about modifications to what was working just fine, thank you very much. All humans, though, are born, we live and we die. Our children grow up and move on with their lives. We can lose our jobs in America with only an hour s notice. Friends come and go and sometimes we separate from family members. There are painful losses due to disease, weather catastrophes and war. We can’t do much about the fact that life changes, but we don t have to like it, right?

Life can be scary and depressing, unless we learn how to live with universal laws like, When one door closes, another opens. That precept never fails, but we must believe, know. it is true for it to ‘kick in.’ We’ve all heard, Everything happens for a reason,” but when we’re mourning, we don’t care. Welcome to FindLaw's coverage of existing Missouri legislation and rules related to individuals' immigration status. However, it is important to be aware of the relationship and tension between state and federal law when it comes to subjects involving immigration. Below you will find information on what, if any, rules Missouri has regarding immigration checks by law enforcement, educational institutions, and employers, as well as the existence of E-Verify requirements, restrictions on public benefits based on an individual's immigration status, and more.

Although immigration and enforcement are typically matters dealt with by federal immigration authorities, an increasing number of local and county law enforcement officials are starting to assist with, investigate, or pursue suspected immigration-related offenses. Also, under a federal program known as "Secure Communities", all individuals arrested are fingerprinted and run through a database which checks their immigration s ... Read more »

#In N. H, Christie pivots away from gun laws he once backed

MILFORD, N.H. — Gov. Chris Christie made another pivot away from the gun control policies he had advocated as New Jersey governor Friday.

On the heels of the shooting of four U.S. servicemen at a Chatanooga military recruitment center and nine churchgoers in Charleston, S.C. Christie was asked by a questioner at Chapanga's Griddle Grill for his position on assault weapons.

"We need an attorney general who's going to understand that we don't need to pass new laws," said Christie, a 2016 Republican candidate for president. "We have plenty of laws on the books to stop this."

Christie, who as governor had supported New Jersey bills that include an assault weapons sales ban in 2013. said he is now against any new federal gun legislation, which would include restoring an assault weapons ban that originally passed in 1994 and has since expired.

In April 2013, Christie proposed banning the sale of . ... Read more »

New York, still reeling from the attacks of September 11, is relying on the administration of Mayor Mike Bloomberg to help the city get back on its feet. Michael Cardozo, corporation counsel, is one man Mayor Bloomberg turns to when asking, "What's the right thing to do?"

Michael A. Cardozo '66 admits that he found the weight of his family's history at Columbia a bit daunting when he arrived at the Law School. He remembers, in particular, a class with "the great torts professor" Willis L.M. Reese .

#Immigration And Marriage: What Happens If You Marry Or Divorce A Foreign Spouse?

Hollywood movies have made it conventional wisdom that one way to speed through the red tape of immigration is to marry. This is true. Often, the marriage is one that is genuinely based on love and affection. Other times, not so much.

Federal officials say the revelation by Oregon first lady Cylvia Hayes that she married an Ethiopian man for $5,000 so he could get his green card has shined a light on the most common way to cheat the U.S. immigration system.

And potentially one of the most dangerous.

About 1 million foreign nationals gain legal status each year, and fully one-fourth of those are through marriage to an American citizen or someone who already is a lawful permanent resident, known as a green card holder.

Of those, some estimate 5% to 15% may be fraudulent, said Todd Siegel, a section chief with Homeland Security Investigations, which is part of Immigration ... Read more »

#Income tax

income tax law: an overview

In 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It empowered Congress to tax "incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." The Internal Revenue Code is today embodied as Title 26 of the United States Code (26 U.S.C. ) and is a lineal descendant of the income tax act passed in 1913, following ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment. While some states do not have an income tax (Nevada), all residents and all citizens of the United States are subject to the federal income tax. Not everyone, however, must file a return. #Planned Parenthood mum on whether docs skirting law by altering abortion methods

Planned Parenthood is hitting back on claims clinics may be illegally selling fetal tissue, after an undercover video showed an official discussing how they collect fetal body parts. The tissue is donated for research, the group said, and they don’t profit from it.

But so far, Planned Parenthood hasn’t specifically addressed a separate question: whether their doctors actually alter the timing and method of abortions to get that tissue, which also would be illegal under federal law.

And that question may be a focal point as lawmakers on several congressional committees launch investigations into the group.

"I don't care how much political weight Planned Parenthood throws around this town. No one is above the law," Rep. Martha Roby, R-Ala. said Friday.

The video was secretly shot by the pro-life group Center for Medical Progress last year and released this week to the med ... Read more »

#Indiana Divorce Questions - Cordell - Cordell

Indiana men s divorce attorneys provide answers to frequently asked questions about the divorce process and divorce laws in Indiana.

What are the grounds for divorce in Indiana?

Although Indiana is a no-fault divorce state, the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage must declare the appropriate grounds upon which the dissolution is being sought. The appropriate lawful ground will be that which the parties agree upon and can substantiate, or that which the filing spouse desires to prove to the court. The dissolution of marriage grounds are as follows:

Irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

Fault:

  • The felony conviction of either of the parties;
  • Impotence; or
  • Incurable insanity for a period of at least two years.

#In Liberal Europe, Abortion Laws Come With Their Own Restrictions - The Atlantic

We noticed that you have an

A protester opposed to abortion demonstrates outside the Marie Stopes clinic in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2012. (AP)

I'm a native of North Carolina, which just passed a stunningly restrictive new abortion law. and I'm currently living in China, where abortion is cheap, government-funded, and common. So recently, I began wondering which countries have the most liberal abortion laws, and how lax these laws actually are. I assumed that Western Europe would be the land of abortion on demand, likely government-subsidized, and possibly with a free bag of condoms afterward. But as it turns out, abortion laws in Europe are both more restrictive and more complicated than that.

Waiting periods, decried by American pro-choicers as infantilizing and unreasonably burdensome, are common in Western Europe.

#In which states is cheating on your spouse illegal?

Adultery isn't just a crime in the eyes of your spouse. In 21 states, cheating in a marriage is against the law, punishable by a fine or even jail time.

The New Hampshire Legislature is voting on a law Thursday that would repeal its anti-adultery law. Currently, adultery is a Class B misdemeanor and punishable by a fine up to $1,200 in the state.

"I don't think there's any appetite in New Hampshire to use police powers to enforce a marriage," New Hampshire state Rep. Tim O'Flaherty, the bill's sponsor, said during a public hearing last month.

Last year, Colorado repealed its anti-adultery law.

States' anti-adultery laws are rarely enforced, a vestige of our country's Puritanical beginnings, says Naomi Cahn, a law professor at the George Washington University Law School.

"I suspect it's not something most people having non-marital relationships are thinking about," Cahn tells USA TODAY Netwo ... Read more »

#Indiana Divorce: Dividing Property

Talk to a Local Family Law Attorney

All divorcing couples must figure out how to divide their marital property and assign any marital debts. Indiana law requires an equitable division of property in divorce, meaning that the division must be fair but not necessarily equal. Some couples are able to agree on their own about how to divide property, while others use the help of attorneys or a mediator to negotiate a settlement. Couples who don’t manage to resolve property issues will end up going to court to ask for a decision from a judge.

Marital Property and Separate Property

Marital property is property a couple acquires during marriage, while separate property is property one spouse owns before marriage, or acquires by gift or inheritance while married. Although Indiana law makes a distinction between marital and separate property, a judge may divide all of a couple’s property in any ... Read more »

#In Canada - s immigration law, anyone can be a terrorist

It’s called section 34 (1) (f) of Canada’s main immigration law, and it likely would have kept Nelson Mandela himself out of this country.

Photos View photos

One elderly woman s only political act was to stitch together uniforms for armed rebels in Ethiopia, then ruled by a murderous tyrant named Haile Mariam Mengistu.

Another man, now in his 60s, once donated the equivalent of $50 to the militant opposition in his country.

Yet another man used to act as an informal contact for foreign journalists who were seeking interviews with anti-government guerrillas in El Salvador.

None of these three people ever engaged in political violence themselves, and yet all of them along with dozens and perhaps hundreds of others face the threat of deportation on the grounds that they pose a security risk to the people of Canada, under a catch-all provision of this country s immigration law that man ... Media Law is a legal field that relates to legal regulation of the telecommunications industry, information technology, broadcasting, advertising, the entertainment industry, censorship, and internet and online services among others.

As the popularity of various media have proliferated, the field of media law has become more important. Just over a century ago, the media would have consisted of print and live performances alone. Today, the media comprises not only the printed word and live actors, but also radio, television, movies, video games, mobile devices, and the Internet.

#Planning to study law at university? Read this first

Sponsored by:

Starting university is a milestone that marks the beginning of an important rite of passage into independent adulthood.

Having the freedom to eat baked beans on toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner means there is plenty to get excited about, but the transition from A-levels to doing a degree can be daunting.

Law is often seen as a difficult course, so for school leavers beginning legal studies, that small step can sometimes feel more like a giant leap.

For Eleanor Sheerin, studying law at university felt like a massive step up. The University of Warwick undergraduate, now in her penultimate year, says: A lot of people, including myself, felt quite spoonfed at school. You could previously get away with a lot of waffling and bluffing, but at university you can't do that.

A lot of areas of law, such as property and criminal, are very precise.
