#What Is Elder Abuse?

What is Elder Abuse? Is it Really A Crime?

Often it is a crime. In many cases abusers break the law and can be charged with a criminal offense. People who commit the crime of elder abuse are often related to or responsible for the older man or woman they harm. Victims of elder abuse know their abusers. There are many kinds of elder abuse. Physical abuse includes any kind of physical battery, such as slapping, pushing, kicking, punching, or injuring with an object or weapon. It also includes deliberate exposure to severe weather, inappropriate use of medication and unnecessary physical restraint. Sexual abuse includes any forced sexual activity. All are crimes under Indiana law.

Elder Abuse also includes mental cruelty and psychological abuse. If someone humiliates, insults, frightens, threatens, ... Read more »

Transfer Student Questions

Most people often equate the study of Computer Science to the study of computer programming. Edsger Dijkstra one of the pioneers of the Computer Science discipline once said, Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. The study of Computer Science encompasses much more than programming and involves a variety of topics such as analysis and design of algorithms, formal design techniques, design of programming languages, software engineering, assembly language and computer organization, distributed computing, artificial intelligence and mathematical analysis. Computer scientists study how to efficiently organize, store and retrieve data, how to write efficient programs, probe the limits of algorithmic techniques in designing programs to behave intelligently, develop new applications that benefit society and humankind, de ... The Guide to Law Online, prepared by the Law Library of Congress Public Services Division, is an annotated guide to sources of information on government and law available online. It includes selected links to useful and reliable sites for legal information.

The Guide to Law Online is an annotated compendium of Internet links; a portal of Internet sources of interest to legal researchers. Although the Guide is selective, inclusion of a site by no means constitutes endorsement by the Law Library of Congress.

In compiling this list, emphasis wherever possible has been on sites offering the full texts of laws, regulations, and court decisions, along with commentary from lawyers writing primarily for other lawyers. Materials related to law and government that were written by or for lay persons also have been included, as have government sites that provide even quite general information about themselves or their agencies.

New York Wage and Hour Lawsuits

New York wage and hour lawsuits allege violations of various wage and hour laws—meaning employees claim they were not paid enough for work being done. In some cases, employees are misclassified as administrative and exempt from overtime pay. In other cases, they are misclassified as independent contractors and do not receive minimum wage or other benefits. Some employees claim they are required to work off the clock, even if they should be paid overtime wages.

Wage and hour provisions are covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

About William W. Cook’s gifts to the Law School

The entire collection of buildings in the Law Quad was built, and then donated to the University, by William W. Cook (1858-1930), a native of Hillsdale Michigan who graduated from the Literary College in 1880 and the Law School in 1882. Cook earned a fortune in New York City. He spent most of his career as general counsel for The Mackay Companies, which from about 1880-1930 provided the only competition to the Western Union in the field of telegraph and cable service.

The process of giving a building to the University back then was far different from what is done now. Cook simply asked the University to buy the land where he wanted the buildings to be, then hired an architect and oversaw the construction process himself. He, not the University, was the client, and he decided every detail about the buildings. When construction was complete, Cook donated the buildings to the University.

Cook chose, for the Law Sch ... Read more »

Our contracts are typically for one to two years, but we do provide flexibility with month-to-month, three-month and six-month contracts as well. Of course, as with any office rental, the financial terms for a long-term contract will be the most favorable.

We have a law firm grade telecommunications system that you can opt into. Unlike other office centers that rely on VOIP technology (that can sound like you’re talking on a cell phone), we bring multiple T1 lines into the office, giving you the best phone quality.

There’s no extra charge for you to participating in Law Firm Suites Referral System. Referrals will come from other attorneys in the office. Sometimes a referring attorney may ask us to match them with an appropriate referral partner, but not always. Any arrangement that you make (in terms of fee splitting) will be between you and the referring attorney.

It s been our experience that lawyers with ‘competing’ practice areas actually exchange the mos ... Read more »
