#Graduate Degree Requirements

Students may work towards three graduate degrees—Master of Science (a terminal degree), Master of Engineering (a terminal degree), or Doctor of Philosophy—in one of five areas: Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science, and Engineering Sciences.  Not all areas admit students to every degree (M.S. M.E. Ph.D.); see the Graduate Programs page for a listing of which degrees are offered by each area.

Please note that we strongly encourage any student who is considering ultimately pursuing the Ph.D. at Harvard to apply directly to the Ph.D. program.  Students in our masters programs are not given preferential treatment in admission to the Ph.D. program.

Our graduate programs are administered through Harvard's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

The requirements for each degree are summarized below. Please note that the SEAS graduate degree requirements are currently under re ... Read more »

#Grad School: Still Worth the Money?

Harvard Business School Baker Library 2009 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The recent economic downturn has sparked a media frenzy over the value of graduate school. Pundits and young professionals alike are wondering if grad school is still worth the hefty investment. Law school, in particular, has been maligned by everyone from The New York Times to independent bloggers, who use anecdotal evidence to question the job prospects for future graduates.

Business school has also not escaped the fray. While there have certainly been isolated cases of law and business school graduates having trouble finding jobs (this trend is limited primarily to graduates from less well-ranked schools), graduate school is still undoubtedly a “slam dunk” investment for nearly all potential applicants. The costs of business and law school may be substantial, but the significant, lifelong returns justify the investment for the vast majority ... Read more »

History of Lake Geneva

As near as geologists can tell, Geneva Lake was formed about 20,000 years ago, as the last glacier traveled across North America. The lake is over 7 miles long from east to west and over 2 miles wide at its widest point from Williams Bay to the Lake Geneva Yacht Club.

There are approximately 22 miles of shoreline, and the surface area is 5,263 acres. Geneva Lake is the 2nd deepest spring fed lake in Wisconsin, with depths reaching 142 feet just off Black Point in Fontana. The lake is fed entirely by underground springs, and has no surface inlets. The only outlet, the White River, in the City of Lake Geneva, feeds into the Fox, Illinois, and Mississippi Rivers.

The earliest residents in the area were the Pottawatomi Tribe, who had migrated here in the 1600’s from northern Wisconsin. Their best-known leader was a chief by the name of Big Foot, which the beach on the East end of the lake has been named in honor of. ... Read more »

#Rental History

Rental History verification is much more accurate nowadays than in the past for landlords. When an applicant gives you their Rental History on the form, what action do you take? You verify the Rental History by calling the references, correct? That is absolutely the easiest verification to fool. If you were a deadbeat tenant looking to rent, and you know you would get negative Rental History references from your previous landlords, you would simply give your friends as referrals, right?

This is exactly what is happening when checking Renter History. You would be surprised at how many people go to these lengths for approval. I bet you even have some tenants that have done that renting from you right now. Rental History screening is more important now than ever, and at YouCheckCredit.com, you can get a Rental History report instantly by using our PALS (Previous Address Lookup Service) reports.

#GW Law School Accused of - Predatory - Poaching - Law Blog

george washington law school

With law school applicants in shorter supply. it s a tense time for law schools. And in the heart of the nation s capital, the competitive pressures have spilled into the open.

A top dean at American University Washington College of Law is venting frustration over the recent exodus of AU students to George Washington University Law School, accusing his nearby rival of engaging in poaching.

Speaking only for myself and not in my official law school capacity, I view this practice as downright predatory, Anthony E. Varona. AU s associate dean for academic affairs, wrote in a recent Facebook post, which was republished at TaxProf Blog on Thursday.

GW law officials deny they re raiding AU s student body, but what s not in dispute is that an unusually large number of AU students are deciding that they d rather go to GW. In the 2013-14 academic year, 54 students left ... Read more »

A career as a solicitor will demand several qualities of you:

  • intellectual ability
  • versatility
  • people skills / a desire to work with and for people
  • commitment

If you want to become a solicitor you should weigh up carefully the cost of training that's required to complete the qualification process. A number of funding options are available to you although students are by no means guaranteed to receive any form of financial assistance.

Florida Restrictions on Payday Loan Lenders

Florida law limits the interest and terms of payday loans, and requires payday loan lenders to comply with other rules that protect consumers.

While payday lending is legal in Florida, it is subject to strict limitations. If you have a problem with a Florida payday lender, you can turn to the state for help. But if you obtained the loan from an out-of-state lender over the Internet or the telephone, the help that Florida can provide may be limited.

#Greening EU Competition Law and Policy

Looking for an inspection copy?

Description

One of the fundamental challenges currently facing the EU is that of reconciling its economic and environmental policies. Nevertheless, the role of environmental protection in EU competition law and policy has often been overlooked. Recent years have witnessed a shift in environmental regulation from reliance on command and control to an increased use of market-based environmental policy instruments such as environmental taxes, green subsidies, emissions trading and the encouragement of voluntary corporate green initiatives. By bringing the market into environmental policy, such instruments raise a host of issues that competition law must address. This interdisciplinary treatment of the interaction between these key EU policy areas challenges the view that EU competition policy is a special case, insulated from environmental concerns by the overriding efficiency imperative, and put ... Top MBA programs are tough to get into, but in most cases the hard work will be well worth the effort. If you are wondering how to get into a top MBA program, the tips below will help you do just that.

How to Get Into a Top MBA Program- Tip #1

Christina Mabley, the Director of MBA Admissions at McCombs School of Business. offers this advice to applicants who want to get into a top MBA program—specifically, the McCombs MBA program:

Applications that stand out are ones that complete a good story.

Everything in the application should provide a consistent story about why an MBA, why now and why specifically an MBA from McCombs. The application should tell us what you want to get out of the program and conversely, what you feel you will bring to the program.

Vice President, General Manager

On November 14, Wolters Kluwer Legal Education hosted the first ever invitation-only Leading Edge summit for Law Students. Inspired by our productive Leading Edge conference for Law Faculty in July, Leading Edge: Law Student was an attendee-driven forum for brainstorming what the future of legal education should look like from a student's perspective. We had much curiosity heading into the conference: how different would the students' perspective on the future of legal education look from that of the faculty?

As it turned out, that was the wrong question. The students, in their rich and probing discussions, differed from faculty not so much in what they agreed as future goals — stronger practical education, smoother paths to employability, greater diversity, all of which both groups spoke about intensively — but in what they considered the how of how to get there.

There was extensive discussion by students, for example, of the ... Read more »

Harvard s Online HBX Program In Biz Basics Goes Global

HBS Professor Janice Hammond taping a CORe segment for her course on business analytics

All told, slightly more than 1,100 students have now taken the primer on the fundamentals of business called CORe (Credential of Readiness) program. In the first beta starting last June, the trio of courses Business Analytics, Economics for Managers, and Financial Accounting were open to only undergraduate students in colleges in Massachusetts and alumni. #What qualifications do I need to get into Stanford Law School?

Aside from a few requirements (i.e. a bachelor s degree), there s not a single set of qualifications that will necessarily get you in. Instead, the Dean of Admissions will holistically evaluate several pieces in your application. The best answer I can give is that to qualify to get into Stanford Law School, you have to have the right fit with the school. This holds true at most other law schools in the country.

Law schools will ask for a few things in an application, each presumably providing information that the school weighs in making an admission decision. Stanford, and most other law schools, will request all post-secondary transcripts, an LSAT score, a resume, two or more letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. The transcripts and LSAT scores allow schools to objectively evaluate each student relative to the pool of applicants. The LSAT purports to evaluate an applicants logic, argumentative, ...
