"LLB" redirects here. For other uses, see LLB (disambiguation) .

The Bachelor of Laws (abbreviated LL.B.. LLB or rarely Ll.B. ) is an undergraduate, or bachelor, degree in law (or a first professional degree in law, depending on jurisdiction) offered in most common law countries as the primary law degree and which originated in England. [ 1 ] It was established as a liberal arts degree, [ 2 ] which requires that the student undertake a certain amount of study of the classics. [ 1 ] Nonetheless, the goals of most LL.B. programs are to provide a scholarly education, and therefore jurisdictions which offer the LL.B. require additional education or training before a graduate is authorized to practice law. [ 3 ] In English-speaking Canada it is sometimes referred to as a post-graduate degree because previous university education is usually required for admission. The "LL." of the abbreviation for the degree is fr ... Read more »

Environmental law - or "environmental and natural resources law" - is a collective term describing the network of treaties. statutes. regulations. and common and customary laws addressing the effects of human activity on the natural environment .

Contents

The broad category of "environmental law" may be broken down into a number of more specific regulatory subjects. While there is no single agreed-upon taxonomy, the core environmental law regimes address environmental pollution. A related but distinct set of regulatory regimes, now strongly influenced by environmental legal principles, focus on the management of specific natural resources. such as forests, minerals, or fisheries. Other areas, such as environmental impact assessment, may not fit neatly into either category, but are nonetheless important components of environmental law.

Have you considered a career in law? The University of Leicester School of Law is one of a just a handful of universities that offers a fast track two-year LLB law degree for graduates. In the recent Guardian rankings, we were placed 15th out of 95 Law Schools.

LLB Law degrees can lead to the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which is required if you wish to be a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) which is required if you wish to be a barrister. The LLB degree is also of value to international students who wish to pursue a legal career as it is recognised for entry on to equivalent courses in countries such as Canada.

In order for a law degree to be classed as 'qualifying' and allow entry on to the LPC, BPTC or equivalent, it must contain a number of compulsory 'professional exemption subjects'. The traditional three-year LLB Law ... Read more »

Let's be clear: in this market, the "best" law firm is the one that will employ you. If you have a job, congratulations, you're number one. But the methods for evaluating the large law firms that are best at the business of practicing law are stuck in the past. The new normal means new challenges for firms. Is bigger always better? More revenue sounds nice, unless the firm is overly reliant on a few rainmakers who can jump ship and leave the rest of the firm scrambling for clients. Surely, the last client who cared about white-shoe status is somewhere trying to find a new ribbon for his typewriter.

The Power 100 blends objective data points (changes in headcount over time, “homegrown” partners, and number of women partners) with subjective feedback from over 20,000 associates, partners, and other members of the legal community. The result is a more complete picture of each firm, encompassing employee satisfaction, compensation, reputation, desirability as an employer, and da ... Read more »

A distinction between single-firm and multi-firm conduct is fundamental to the structure of U.S. antitrust law, which, as noted antitrust scholar Phillip Areeda has pointed out, "contains a 'basic distinction between concerted and independent action.'" [ 2 ] Multi-firm conduct tends to be seen as more likely than single-firm conduct to have an unambiguously negative effect and "is judged more sternly." [ 3 ] European competition law also includes a fundamental distinction between single-firm and multi-firm conduct, but a different analytical structure is applied. In U.S. antitrust law, the Sherman Act addresses single-firm conduct by providing a remedy against "[e]very person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize. any part of the trade or commerce among the several States." [ 4 ] This prohibition does not condemn monopoly per se but only monopoly that has been acquired or maintained through prohibited conduct: Most businessmen don't like their competitors, or for t ... Over the many years of representing clients in the Houston area, Federal Drug Lawyer Charles Johnson has handled the cases of many individuals charged with drug charges and or drug related offenses and have come to understand that good people fall into bad times and then bad situations. Sometimes people break the law because they wanted to provide a better life for their families. You begin to understand the forces that shape humans, and you better understand why and how someone could end up in the backseat of a cop car, and you want to help.

#Types of Law Degrees and Legal Studies Degrees

    Essential Information

Students who want to practice law in the United States can enroll in a Juris Doctor degree program and complete it after three years of full-time study.

Three main types of law degrees are available in the United States. The first law degree is the Juris Doctor (J.D.), and it qualifies graduates to practice law in the U.S. The second law degree is the Master of Laws (LL.M.), and the third degree is the Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.).

Some J.D. programs may be combined with other master's degree programs in specific facets of law, business or public policy, and these programs might last longer than three years. The first year of study focuses on basic topics, like international law, criminal law and civil procedure. Second- and third-year students may customize their education to reflect their interests, taking electives in such areas as tax and business.

The layman's answer would be something along the lines of actions that are in opposition to the laws (statutes) that govern the country. Law students who begin their studies in Criminal Law will grow to realise that a "crime" constitutes many facets which go beyond the "bad act" itself (the actus reus). In looking at whether a person is a "criminal", one has to look at the mental state the person had while committing the crime(his "mens rea"). It would be worthwhile to remember that every person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Criminal law is based on the theory that the defendant is innocent until prov ... Read more »

This is a subject listing of resources for legal forms.

Practicing lawyers require sample versions of standard legal documents known as model forms. There are sets of forms for federal practice, for most states, and for specialized subject areas. Some sets of forms include annotations, checklists, and citations to cases in which the forms were used. Most law firms maintain in-house collections of forms relating to their specific areas of practice. Generally, there are two kinds of forms:

instruments. which are used to complete transactions between private parties in business, real estate, estate planning, etc. and

pleadings. which are filed in court.

Model forms of both types of legal documents can be found in the library, in books, looseleafs, electronic databases, and the Internet. Remember to browse the shelves for additional form books shelved close to the following titles of books and looseleafs for each ... Read more »

    England and Wales

You may be able to apply for a ‘grant of representation’ - known as ‘probate’.

You can apply yourself or use a solicitor or another person licensed to provide probate services.

Most cases follow the same basic process.

Pay any Inheritance Tax that’s due.

Collect the estate’s assets, eg money from the sale of the person’s property.

Pay any debts, eg unpaid utilities bills.

Distribute the estate - this means giving any property, money or possessions to the people entitled to it (‘beneficiaries’).

A grant of representation can sometimes be known as a ‘grant of probate’, ‘letters of administration’ or ‘letters of administration with a will’.

    #Women s Aid - The Survivor s Handbook - Your legal rights

Domestic violence is dealt with both under the criminal law and the civil law. The two systems are separate and are administered by separate courts:

    • The civil law is primarily aimed at protection (or in some cases compensation). A survivor of domestic violence can make an application for an injunction (a court order) either to the Family Proceedings Court or the County Court (usually through her solicitor). Other family proceedings (such as child contact or divorce) also take place in the County Court.
    • The criminal law is primarily aimed at punishing the offender. The police together with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) initiate the process. Criminal cases are heard in either the Magistrates' Court or the Crown Court depending on the severity of the charge.

Though Aristotle is often referred to as “the father of natural law,” [1] this appellation is debatable and arises primarily from the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas. The Stoics asserted that the universe existed according to a rational and purposeful order (a divine or eternal law), and that the means by which a rational being lived in accordance with this order was the natural law, which dictated actions that accorded with virtue. Some of the early Church Fathers sought to incorporate this concept of natural law into Christianity. Thomas Hobbes defined natural law as the way in which a rational human being, seeking to survive and prosper in society, would act. Natural law theories influenced the development of English common law [2]. and featured in the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas, Francisco Suarez. Thomas Hobbes, Hugo Grotius. Samuel von Pufendorf. and John Locke. The concept of natural rights was incorporated in the United States Declaration of Independence .

How did a Harvard MBA help you to become a tech entrepreneur? What do you make of arguments that an MBA is not necessary, even distracting to spend 2 years in school (and in debt) rather than focusing entirely on a business? 1) At the time I was an MBA student (fall 1998 - spring 2000), it was a golden era for MBA students in tech entrepreneurship.  The dot com bubble was in full swing, and the working theory was that MBA students were young enough to understand this brave new world, but had the business knowledge to monetize the Internet.  For the most part, this theory was dead wrong, but it allowed me to do things like start a company over the summer and ... Roman law is the legal system of ancient Rome. The development of Roman law covers more than one thousand years from the law of the twelve tables (from 449 BC ) to the Corpus Juris Civilis of Emperor Justinian I (around 530 ). Roman law as preserved in Justinian's codes became the basis of legal practice in the Byzantine Empire and later in continental Europe .

Using the term Roman law in a broader sense, one may say that Roman law is not only the legal system of ancient Rome but the law that was applied throughout most of Europe until the end of the 18th century. In some countries like Germany the practical application of Roman law lasted even longer. For these reasons, many modern civil law systems in Europe and elsewhere are heavily influenced by Roman law. This is especially true in the field of private law. Even the English and North American Common law owes some debt to Roman law although Roman law exercised much less influence on the English legal ... Read more »

    #Workers Comp In-Depth

Workers' compensation refers to a system of laws outlining specific benefits to which injured employees are entitled. and the procedures for obtaining such benefits. Every state has its own workers' compensation laws, which are contained in statutes, and vary somewhat from state to state. In addition, there are special workers' compensation laws for employees of the federal government, and still others for workers in specific types of industries such as railroad employees.

Under the law in most states, every business must have some form of workers' compensation insurance to cover injured employees. Filing a workers' compensation claim is similar to filing an insurance claim; it isn't a lawsuit against an employer, but rather a request for benefits.
