#101 More Law Firm Taglines - 2012 Edition - Law Firm Web Strategy

Back in 2009, Stem Legal published our list of 101 law firm taglines. At that point, many online pundits were quick to point out the terrible ones (no need to name names) as well as some rare gems that seemed to fit their firms well. Are law firm taglines still valuable? It s a good question. Some are indeed terrible, but others are well conceived and through a short snippet of text, convey something positive about the firm s brand.

We wanted to revisit the topic, so we started by checking the 2009 list to see if it was worth updating. But guess what? Most taglines hadn t changed, and some firms had eliminated their tagline altogether. So instead, we decided to add to our original effort, and sought out 101 more taglines. (See the list below.)

It turns out that many firms are still using taglines that do little to set them apart from competitors or communicate core values. I ... Read more »

#10 Simple Laws of Business Success

If my son or daughter were to ask me, "Dad, what do I really need to know in order to be really successful in business?", here's exactly what I'd tell them:

1. Success is always a group effort. There is no such thing as a self-made man or woman. Even if you overcome hundreds of obstacles, you are still beholden to the team you're working with. In addition, we are all standing on the shoulders of giants--the people who created the infrastructure that makes business possible.

2. Work is to be savored. The ability to make a difference in other people's lives is a gift precious beyond price. The only way to make that difference is through expending personal effort, which is the textbook definition of "work." Remember: the ultimate failure in work and in life is to be idle and useless.

3. Anger is an expression of helplessness. People become angry not as the result of outside e ... Read more »

#Online Mapping Assists Megan s Law Notification

Online Mapping Assists Megan's Law Notification

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department Web site shows the approximate location of offenders returned from a search.

Known as Megan's Law, H.R. 2137 amended the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act of 1994 which requires states to register individuals convicted of sex crimes against children. Megan's Law provides public access to information on sexually violent offenses and offenders while protecting the confidentiality of victims.

Megan's Law was named in honor of Megan Kanka, a seven-year-old New Jersey girl who was raped and murdered by a twice-convicted sex offender who lived in her neighborhood. While not intended to punish offenders, the law authorizes local law enforcement to notify the public about high-risk and serious sex offenders who reside in, are employed in, or frequent the community. #85 Stanford Law graduates try to co-author the perfect commencement speech

Emily DeRuy

One student is trying to make commencement a little more bearable for her classmates by crowdsourcing her graduation speech.

Marta Belcher has asked fellow members of the Stanford Law School Class of 2015 to help her develop, write and even edit the speech she and several other students will deliver at a diploma ceremony on June 13.

“There is no reason that a graduation ceremony in 2015 should look the same as it did for the Class of 1915,” Belcher said in a statement. “Being at Stanford and in the Silicon Valley, we are surrounded by a spirit of innovation that encourages us to ask, ‘Why do we do it this way, and how can we do it better?’”

Using a class wiki, more than 85 students are working together to create the speech. The group began the third and final phase of the process at the end of April, with an edit-a-thon.

It s the first time students at t ... Read more »

#About patents

About patents

First it is important to define what an invention is as only inventions can be patented. An invention is a new, inventive and industrially applicable technical solution to a given technical problem.

When an invention is created, its author can apply for a patent to a Patent Office. A patent is the legal document that describes the invention and grants a property right to the inventor(s) or their successor(s).

Patents are a long-established means of encouraging innovation. This property right confers to the holder the exclusive right of exploitation and enables them to exploit the invention by manufacturing, using, or selling products or processes incorporating the technology covered by the patent. The owner may also allow the invention to be exploited by others over a set period of time, in return for fair remuneration to compensate them for the intellectual and material effort involved in its conception and production

#A Law School Finally Admits That Its Graduates May Never Be Employed - At All.

Time and time again, we ve warned prospective law students about the dangers of applying to law school without first arming themselves with the knowledge that a career in law might not be the golden ticket that it once was. And yet time and time again, those prospective law students have ignored all of the evidence that was presented to them on a silver platter, and continued on their merry way to law school.

These 0Ls don t care about whether they ll be employed; hell, they don t even care how many law schools are sued for their allegedly fraudulent employment statistics. All these sophisticated consumers really care about are the U.S. News law school rankings.

But what would happen if a law school were to inform applicants that they may never be employed at all. Perhaps a message like that would stem the tide of willfully ignorant prospective law students .
