The War on Drugs is terrible for taxpayers and users, because it treats a medical problem as though it were a criminal problem, filling our expensive prisons with millions of non-violent persons, and making violent persons out of non-violent persons. Yet we carry on with this war. This article by Benjamin Powell focuses on an economic analysis of the War, discussing the many other counterproductive aspects of the war. Here is an excerpt:

Prohibition also creates more problems for non-users. Because it increases the cost for addicts to support their habit, many resort to stealing in order to get their needed high. In a study of the U.S. drug war on Latin America, economist David R. Henderson estimated that if the same mark-ups applied to cocaine as to coffee, which would be roughly accurate with cocaine legalization, then cocaine’s price in the United States would fall by about 97%.[12] If cocaine and other narcotics lost the price premium caused by the drug war, few, if any, ... A legal aid society is an organization that offers free or low cost legal services to low income residents. The types of cases handled by these groups may differ by jurisdiction. The guidelines for qualifying for legal services through a legal aid society will also differ by jurisdiction.

Funding for a legal aid society may come from local, regional, or national sources, but the organization is usually a not-for-profit entity. In most cases, the organization will have a board of directors that determine what type of cases will be handled by the organization as well as who will qualify to receive services. Staff attorneys will generally provide pro bono — at no cost — services to clients. In addition to full-time staff attorneys, other licensed attorneys in the area may offer their services for a limited number of cases each year pro bono for eligible clients.

Typical cases handled by a legal aid society include divorce, domestic abuse protective orders, landlord -ten ... Read more »

First things first. This isn t an MBA ranking. It s a business school ranking for popularity.

There are many excellent MBA rankings (for full-time MBA, executive MBA, part-time MBA, specialty MBA rankings) published by the leading MBA related publications like Financial Times, Businessweek, The Economist, Poets Quants.

We weren t interested in presenting old wine in a new bottle. Instead, we have tried to create new wine and present it in a familiar looking bottle (i.e. the rankings format).

The MBA Crystal Ball Bschool Ranking is not about the biggest or the best business schools in the world (based on quality of teaching or diversity of the class profile). It s also not about the highest post-MBA salaries, the average GMAT scores or for that matter anything related to the specific degrees (MBA, MPhil, MFE, PhD) they award.

Those questions have already been addressed by others. At MBA Crystal Ball we are interested in finding out the answer to anothe ... Read more »

Federal law is the whole of the laws passed by the federal government of a country. The federal government is the government that runs the entirety of the country, rather than governments at a smaller level such as state, province, or city. Federal law is typically established in one or more documents that clearly indicate the laws that govern the whole of the country, and may be created and upheld by one or more departments within the federal government. In the United States (US) for example, federal law is created by Congress, upheld by the president, and interpreted and enforced by the Supreme Court.

The US federal law consists of the US constitution, US treaties, federal common law. and federal statutes and regulations. This makes up the body of law for the whole of the US and all citizens within the nation are considered equally protected and governed by these laws. Due to the separation of powers between different levels of government, these laws will usually not deal ... Read more »

A Law degree is an academic degree conferred for studies in law. Such degrees are generally preparation for legal careers; but while their curricula may be reviewed by legal authority, they do not themselves confer a license. A legal license is granted (typically by examination) and exercised locally; while the Law Degree can have local, international, and world aspects- e.g. in Britain the Legal Practice Course is required to become a British solicitor [ 1 ] [ 2 ] or the Bar Professional Course (BPTC) to become a barrister. [ 3 ]

The first academic degrees were all law degrees- and the first law degrees were doctorates. The foundations of the first universities in Europe were the glossators of the 11th century, which were schools of law. [ 4 ] The first European university, that of Bologna. was founded as a school of law by four famous legal scholars in the 12th century who were students of the glossator school in that city. Slander is oral defamation of character. Defamation is a civil offense that occurs when one party makes false and malicious statements about another to a third party. Many jurisdictions have slander laws that address this type of behavior and allow the harmed party to recover damages.

For statements made by one person about another to be considered slander, several circumstances must exist. To begin with, the statements must be conveyed to a third party. The law does not generally recognize the possibility of defaming a person to herself. Also, the statements must be false. No matter how private or hurtful a comment is, it is not illegal to say it if it is true.

Furthermore, if a person wishes to use slander laws to seek justice, she must be able to prove that the statements against her were made with malice. To do this, she must show that the accused had the intention to do harm. If someone makes false statements mistakenly and it hurts another person, this is not c ... Read more »

Disability law is largely regulated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. This Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in employment, housing, education, and access to public services.

The ADA defines a disability as any of the following:

  1. "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual."
  2. "a record of such impairment." or
  3. "being regarded as having such an impairment."

While alcoholism is included as a disability, other socially undesirable behavior is excluded from the Act. For example, sexual behavior disorders, compulsive gambling, and pyromania are all excluded. The ADA, however, does not list all impairments covered. The ADA further requires that reasonable accomodation be made so as to provide individuals with disabilities equal opportunities. Agenices and departments charged with enforcement of the ADA includ ... Read more »

Even a simple legal case involves a lot of information: contacts, the dates for meetings and court hearings, and a long list of documents. Case-management software keeps it all organized. Some programs are Web based, so you, your partners and employees can access them anywhere. The ABA recommends you look at the different programs and choose software that has only the features your practice needs. A small one-person office doesn't need all the bells and whistles a 500-attorney legal giant does.

Microsoft Word has features that are particularly handy for lawyers. By saving from Word to a PDF, for example, you can lock a legal document in its current form so it's difficult to make unnoticed changes. With downloadable tools, you can redact a document, blacking out information you want to keep confidential. You can also save time with document templates. For example, Microsoft offers a template for legal pleading paperwork, compatible with Word.

If the person in the photographs is 18 years of age or older, then it is not illegal to post nude or pornographic pictures of them on the Internet. However, the photographer or the person doing the posting of the pictures, must keep a record of the name, contact information and consent form of the person in the picture, before the picture is posted. Additionally, the photographer should attempt to keep underage persons from viewing pictures that are considered to be pornographic in nature. The federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, established by Congress in 2007, offers debt relief to graduates employed in public service. The program serves graduates from many types of U.S. institutions, including law schools. PSLF provides an incentive for individuals who make long-term commitments to employment in public-interest fields. After a law school graduate has made 120 separate monthly payments toward his loans while employed with a qualifying, public-interest-law employer, the program will forgive the remainder of the individual's federal loans. PSLF covers loans incurred under the current direct loan program, as well as previous types of federal loans consolidated into an individual's direct consolidation loan.

Attorneys can also seek state-specific programs in their own states. Some state bar associations, as well as other state and local organizations, offer loan repayment help for public-interest lawyers. To receive assistance, law school graduates m ... Read more »

Masters degrees are most often awarded at postgraduate level from universities around the world. At this level, students gain a broader insight into their chosen area of study along with valuable analytical capabilities. Studying abroad increases the value of your experience further, as it introduces an understanding of the international context.

The most common types of masters degrees are the Master of Arts (MA) and the Master of Science (MSc). As with most masters these are awarded after one to two years of study at postgraduate level. In some cases a master degree can be awarded for a longer period of study of four or five years. This is common within the field of engineering for example in many countries influenced by the Germanic system.

In some places masters degrees are also available as undergraduate degrees. This is for example quite common ... Read more »

Full-time faculty members in each specialized field provide instruction, academic advising, and thesis supervision.

All of GW’s graduate programs benefit from the Law School's location in Washington, DC, which provides access to unparalleled academic opportunities as well as the many distinguished expert practitioners, government officials, and judges who teach on an adjunct basis.

When considering their career objectives, some students decide to pursue an advanced degree with a concentration in two different areas. There are several advantages to obtaining both degrees at the same time, with the time-saving factor being key. Taking the degrees separately would normally take about five years. By combining the two courses of study together, most students can graduate in three to four years.

So, exactly what is a dual MBA/JD? It is a graduate level of study that allows the student to integrate management skills while obtaining a law degree, culminating in the award of a Master in Business Administration (MBA) and a Juris Doctorate (JD). These programs require that the student apply for admission to both programs, specifying that they are enrolling for the dual degree. The MBA/JD program requires students to attend school on a full-time basis. In addition to obtaining a law degree, this joint program provides students with the management leadership skills ... from Brian Dalton, Breaking Media Director of Research

The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”

Criminal Law Overview and Information

Criminal law involves prosecution of a person by the government, as the representative of the people of society, for an act that has been classified as a crime. Criminal law differs from civil law in many aspects, including the parties involved, the outcome that is sought, and the standard of proof required. In a criminal case the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case, the injured party brings the suit. Crimes are punishable by incarceration, fines, or both, whereas a person found civilly liable may only be forced to pay money or surrender property. Crimes generally require a showing of wrongful intent, while the focus of a civil case is upon fault, regardless of intent.
