So when on 31 October, with the help of her 31-year-old daughter, she got out of her first-floor apartment, and climbed into the passenger seat of her friend’s Chevrolet Tahoe, it was because she planned to do one of what she considers her most important tasks: going to vote.

It was not until weeks later, when Beatty got a call from the nonprofit Southern Coalition for Social Justice that she learned her ballot had been thrown out.

A federal jury has awarded a black New York woman $280,000 after her manager, who is also black, repeatedly used the word nigger to refer to her during a conversation about unprofessional behaviour.

Rob Carmona, who runs the Strive East Harlem employment agency, was recorded using the language to Brandi Johnson, who said she was left feeling degraded and disrespected .

The case has raised questions over the use of offensive language among different ethnic groups. Most attorneys have a biannual requirement of 24 credit hours due every two years. The Rules provide exceptions for senior attorneys, attorneys resuming active practice after a period of inactivity, and newly admitted attorneys who are not admitted during the month of December. However, these exceptions comprise only approximately 5% of all active attorneys and judges. If an attorney was admitted in an even-numbered year, credits are always due to be completed by December 31 of every even-numbered year; odd-numbered year admissions complete credit by December 31 of every odd-numbered year. Of the 24 credits, one-sixth, or 4 credits, must be earned in Enhanced Ethics.

Stark Law/ The Prohibition Against “Physician Self-Referral,” 42 U.S.C.§ 1395nn.

Stark Law is based upon AMA Code of Medical Ethics Opinion 8.0321, which prohibits a doctor from referring patients to an outside provider, where the doctor owns an interest in the provider, without full disclosure of the conflict. Stark Law is based on this concept with several differences, (1) the definition of “ownership” has been expanded to mean “any financial relationship,” (2) the rule only applies to Designated Health Services (DHS’s), (3) the rule applies to physicians and close family members, (4) there is no provision for compliance by full disclosure to the patient.

The Custody of Infants Act 1839

In 1838 Caroline Norton began a campaign to get the law changed on the custody of children. Thomas Talfourd MP agreed to her request to introduce a Bill to allow non-adulterous mothers, to have custody of children under seven, with rights of access to older children. The Bill was passed in the House of Commons but was rejected by the House of Lords by just two votes.

Mrs Norton wrote another pamphlet, A Plain Letter to the Lord Chancellor on the Law of Custody of Infants. A copy was sent to every MP and in 1839 Thomas Talfourd tried again. This time the Bill was passed in both houses and gave mothers the right of custody of their children under seven, but only if the Lord Chancellor agreed to it, and only if she was of good character.

Possession

Possession of 2 ounces or less of marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days imprisonment and a fine not to exceed $2,000.

Possession of between 2 and 4 ounces of marijuana is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by imprisonment of up to 1 year and a fine not to exceed $4,000.

Possession of between 4 ounces and 5 lbs. of marijuana is a state jail felony, punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of 180 days imprisonment, a maximum of 2 years imprisonment, and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Possession of between 5 lbs. and 50 lbs. of marijuana is a Third Degree felony, punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of no less than 2 years imprisonment, a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Why Do We Need the Law?

Almost everything we do is governed by some set of rules. There are rules for games, for social clubs, for sports and for adults in the workplace. There are also rules imposed by morality and custom that play an important role in telling us what we should and should not do. However, some rules -- those made by the state or the courts -- are called "laws". Laws resemble morality because they are designed to control or alter our behaviour. But unlike rules of morality, laws are enforced by the courts; if you break a law -- whether you like that law or not -- you may be forced to pay a fine, pay damages, or go to prison.

Why are some rules so special that they are made into laws? Why do we need rules that everyone must obey? In short, what is the purpose of law?
