Over the last year, I’ve written about the most dangerous aspects of getting an MBA. Now 12 years removed from Business School, those are some lessons I wish I’d known about at the time.

However, it’s not all gloom and doom. There are some amazing aspects of taking 2 years of your life to go back to Business School for your MBA. Most people think and MBA is all about getting a bigger pay check afterwards. While that usually happens, that’s not likely what you’ll remember fondly in 10 or 20 years from now.

The civil war between the Algerian army and Islamist guerrillas, sparked by the refusal of the military to recognise the electoral victory of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) in 1991, is not over. The Civil Concord Law, proposed by President Bouteflika in April 1999, approved by referendum in September the same year, and supported by the leaders of the FIS, has failed to convince the majority of the guerrillas to give up their arms and seek peace. No lasting political solution to this Islamist-military conflict has been found and the crisis threatens to spread to other parts of the community.

Unfortunately, according to multiple sources, the U.S. News and World Report seems to only list schools as Tier 1, Tier 3, and Tier 4, at least in 2009. AboveTheLaw and the Law Librarian Blog both noted this. According to the Law Librarian Blog, in 2009 there were 104 schools under the Tier 1 heading, 37 schools in Tier 3, and 43 schools in Tier 4.

This implies to me, intuitively, that Tier 1 would be the law schools ranked 1-49 and that Tier 2 would be the law schools ranked 50-99, in order to have equally sized tiers that are roughly in line with the idea that Tiers 3 and 4 had a similar number of law schools as each other.

It may also be the case that there are no Tier 2 or second tier law schools, just a large batch of Tier 1 schools and a sudden and severe decline into Tier 3 after that.

INDIA’S parliament reopened today after a short break. The government led by Narendra Modi is trying to pass amendments to a 2013 land-acquisition bill through parliament’s upper house, where it lacks a majority. Under the existing bill, any forced sale of land requires the consent of at least 70% of affected owners and must also pass a social-impact test. Compensation is set at double the market value for urban plots and quadruple for rural land. The demands of the bill are a leading reason why investment projects are at a standstill. In December Mr Modi’s government issued a temporary executive order that did away with the consent clause for certain projects. The amended bill would make that change permanent. Plus, here, and everywhere in California, evictions must follow specific legal procedures and a court process before you can be forced to move, unless you are a sole lodger living with the owner.

Beware. Most no fault evictions require landlords to pay relocation payments and restrict whether or not a landlord can raise the rent on a new tenant or convert the unit into a condominium. An article published in the Harvard Law Review is giving a boost to what appears to be the increasingly likely presidential run of Ted Cruz.

Cruz, the Republican senator from Texas, was born in Canada and recently made a point to renounce any Canadian citizenship. His father, who had Cuban citizenship but was an American resident, was working in the oil field in Calgary when the younger Cruz was born. His mother was an American citizen.

That, however, doesn’t mean he isn’t a “natural-born citizen,” according to a bipartisan article in the Law Review published by a former Bush and a former Obama law official.

In 2003, the Mercury News embarked on a project to expose and correct the flaws of Megan's Law in California. Under the federal Megan's Law, most states have made it easy for residents to get accurate, detailed information on high-risk sex offenders. Residents of Florida, New Jersey and 33 other states can find that kind of information online. But in California, it takes a trip to the police department. Even then, the information available is so general it is nearly useless. And, sometimes, it's wrong. Laws that regulate the purchase and use of guns vary quite a bit from state to state, often reflecting regional traditions and attitudes toward guns. Some states require a permit for buying a gun, including a waiting period for a background check, while others have very few restrictions.

Job prospects for law school graduates aren’t improving much. The overall employment rate for recent law grads fell for the sixth year in a row, to 84.5 percent, according to a report  by the National Association for Law Placement, a professional association. The report, released on Thursday, surveyed the class of 2013 and found that even after slight improvement over the last two years, the employment rate remains well below an all-time high of 91.9 percent, reached in 2007 before the financial crisis hit.

At the same time, law schools enroll students who will amass plenty of student loan debt in their three years of study. The American Bar Association has granted permission for Widener Law to become two separate law schools effective July 1. The university will announce the new name for Widener Law Harrisburg and introduce the new dean on Friday.

Enrolling in an online J.D. program may seem like a convenient alternative to spending three years and more than $100,000 on a traditional legal education. especially for working adults—but prospective students should be wary of the potential pitfalls, experts say.
