Earlier today, we picked up an entertaining read by Reuters on Chinese law firm names. They aren t bound by the same ethics rules as U.S. firms, so they can be more creative. Beijing-based King Wood, for instance you won t find a Mr. King or a Mr. Wood at the firm. They don t exist. But the name is catchy.

Anyway, earlier today we wrote this:

In the U.S. ethics rules require law firms to carry the last name of partners who work there, or who did before they retired or died. China has no such rules. Firms there are free to name themselves however they like, and an evocative name can be an asset.

A Michigan court dismissed a lawsuit on Friday brought by former students of  Cooley Law School who accused their alma mater of  misrepresenting recent graduate job placement statistics.

The former Cooley Law grads were seeking $250 million in damages, claiming they decided to attend Cooley based on what they said was misinformation from the school. Law Blog reported on the case here .

But Judge Gordon Quist, who got the case, wasn’t buying it. The court dismissed lawsuit on the grounds that purchasing a legal degree is not protected by the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.

Even if it was, the job numbers at stake were “literally true” whether they differentiated between recent grads in legal jobs vs. non-legal jobs or not, the court stated, adding that the grads “unreasonably relied upon the representations” in question in their law school decision.

Gregor Mendel's law of segregation has four parts. First, it defines an allele. Second, it states that organisms inherit one allele from each parent. Third, it states that gametes only carry one allele for each trait. Fourth, it defines the difference between dominant and recessive genes.

The law of segregation is commonly known also as Mendel s First Law and this is the idea that every inheritable trait or gene as we now call them is controlled by a pair of factors or alleles and those pairs of alleles, when you make gametes separate from each other so that for example if you have a dominant version of allele and a recessive version of allele, one of your gametes will be containing the dominant one, the other one will contain the recessive one. Despite the fact that a used car is a much more likely candidate to be a lemon, federal lemon laws generally cover only new vehicle purchases. But there is one major exception: if the owner has received an express written warranty along with the used vehicle, then federal lemon law will likely cover the used car. An express written warranty can include the balance of a manufacturer s warranty, a separate limited warranty given by the dealer, or an extended warranty or service contract purchased from the dealer at the time of the vehicle purchase. Some used vehicles are certified by the dealer, which extends the existing warranty or creates an additional short warranty on the used vehicle. Having such a warranty will not only offer the potential for a breach of warranty claim, but federal lemon laws can also apply to the situation.

We know the new economics for middle-tier law schools. Applications are down, so to convince students with good test scores to come to your school, you have to offer them money. It s the market, imperfect though it may be, at work.

So when a law school offers full scholarships to a number of students with strong academic credentials, don t think that it s doing you a favor. They re trying to fill their seats, not trying to address the fundamental cost problem of law school. If a law school is offering scholarships to high-performing students, that means that the low-performing students who are paying full price are subsidizing the people in their class who are most likely to bust up the curve. Addressing the value proposition of law school involves lowering tuition for all students, not making law school free for the kids with potentially better options.

Once upon a time, long ago, UMass Law was a stable, rising law school in a sea of resizing, confused law schools:

"Other schools are losing enrollment and decreasing their academic indicators," Bilek said. "To be stable and be increasing academic quality, at a time when nationally legal education is trying to figure out what to do, I would say is where we want to be.

EPA regulates the use of pesticides under the authority of two federal statutes: the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA).

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) provides the basis for regulation, sale, distribution and use of pesticides in the U.S. FIFRA authorizes EPA to review and register pesticides for specified uses. EPA also has the authority to suspend or cancel the registration of a pesticide if subsequent information shows that continued use would pose unreasonable risks. Some key elements of FIFRA include:

Legislative law are laws that are passed by your representative. Like your Congressional or Senate Rep. They write a bill, it has usually two or more sponsors. Then it goes through committees like the Judicial Committee to see if the legal language is correct. then its taken to the floor of the house or senate, if it passes then it goes on to the president to either sign or veto.

A Referendum law is actually voted on by voters. Many States have referendum laws. States like Florida they have to pass by a super majority 60% of the vote. Some States only require a simple Majority.

Laws like Michigan's Marijuana law is an example of a Referendum, people gathered enough signatures, people write the language and if the language is approved by a board then you can get the referendum on the ballot.

As a tenant, you have the right to:

• live in a property that’s safe and in a good state of repair
• have your deposit returned when the tenancy ends - and in some circumstances have it protected
• challenge excessively high charges
• know who your landlord is
• live in the property undisturbed
• see an Energy Performance Certificate for the property
• be protected from unfair eviction and unfair rent
• have a written agreement if you have a fixed-term tenancy of more than 3 years

Medicaid is a state and federal program for low-income individuals and families who cannot afford health care coverage. The program is federally funded and administered by each state, which sets its own eligibility guidelines. Coverage is typically available for children up to age 19. Some states may also have a small co-payment that applies for some services. Grandparents may be able to use the Medicaid program to obtain health insurance for a grandchild.

CHIP is the Children's Health Insurance Program, and is available in every state. The purpose of the program is to provide health insurance coverage to uninsured children and families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid.
