The Certified Internet Webmaster (CIW) program was developed in the late 1990s by a group of IT professionals as a way to provide and maintain industry standards. Today, CIW education programs are available online through the designated website (www.ciwcertified.com ). They are also available at CIW-sanctioned academic institutions, such as high schools, community colleges and universities. There are no educational prerequisites needed to enter a CIW program.

There are four CIW education programs: Web Designer, IT Administrator, Web Site Manager and Enterprise Developer. These programs are available at three certification levels: associate, master and professional. Associate and master programs each focus on one education program, while the professional program encompasses study in all four education programs.

All CIW students are required to take foundational courses in Internet business, site development and network technology. Individual program coursework varies and can include study in Internet security, server administration, database development, site design and Java programming. All programs culminate with a certification exam, which can be taken at a CIW testing center. There are numerous testing centers worldwide.

CIW professionals have applications in a broad range of fields, including IT security, e-commerce design, network server administration, systems administration, application development and systems analysis.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), job growth in these areas is expected to increase between and 2022. The projected growth rate was 12% for network and computer systems administrators, and 15% for database administrators.

In , the BLS reported that the median annual salary for network and computer systems administrators was $74,000, $46,620 for computer user support specialists and $123,950 for computer and systems managers (www.bls.gov ). However, it is important to note that the BLS statistics did not differentiate between CIWs and non-certified IT professionals.
