#Indiana University Bloomington Student Legal Services

The Situation

It s not going to go away. That letter from your landlord hiding in your stack of mail, the ticket from Friday night nestled in your jeans pocket, the summons from the collections agency mingling in the recycling, they may be out of sight, but they re not out of mind. It s making you lose sleep, lose focus, lose your cool. You ve talked to your parents, you ve talked to your friends, and now it s time to talk to a professional.

The Solution

IU Student Legal Services is here to help. We ve been solving the legal dilemmas of IU students for nearly 40 years. Our goal is simple: to keep you focused and keep you in school in the event legal trouble threatens to interfere. We ll talk some sense, talk you down, and, in many cases talk for you in court. If you are a registered IU-Bloomington student and pay your activity fee, you are entitled to our services.

If you re wondering whether you need legal advice, you just might. SLS prides itself on being:

  • Competent: SLS employs four full-time, licensed attorneys. We oversee approximately 25 of the best and brightest second- and third-year law students from IU s Maurer School of Law.
  • Confidential: Your visits to SLS are confidential no one will tell your parents, friends, or IU without your consent. Discussions with our staff are protected by the attorney-client privilege.
  • Close-by: Our offices are on campus, right across from Dunn Meadow. It s a shorter walk to our office than to get a cup of coffee.
  • Complimentary: If you pay the Student Activity Fee, as all undergraduate and most graduate students do, you are entitled to advice and, often, legal representation at no charge. The only expenses you must cover are court fees.

THE DISCLAIMER

Student Legal Services can assist you in a variety of subject matters. There are some matters with which, for ethical and policy reasons, we cannot assist you. Most notably, we cannot assist students in conflicts regarding other students. We can advise you on criminal matters, but IU policy restricts our ability to go to court. We also limit our services to ensure we can offer the greatest assistance to the greatest number of students, so we refrain from complex business cases and child custody matters, for example. In the event we cannot directly help you, we'll refer you to someone who can.
