The Buzz

About Jones Day

A heavy-hitter with a hand in most major areas of law and an internationally-recognized prowess in litigation, Jones Day uses its size and reach-offices in 19 countries spread over five continents-to maintain strong client relationships with global corporate giants. According to The Am Law 100, it's one of the largest firms in the United States by gross revenue.

Midwest Roots

Founded in Cleveland in 1893 by Judge Edwin Blandin and William Lowe Rice, Jones Day made its name by representing Midwestern manufacturers and transportation companies. One of the first firms in the nation to adopt a corporate management structure, Jones Day continued its rise by opening a Washington, DC office in 1946. The years since the firm's founding have brought steady growth-with the addition of dozens of offices at home and overseas-and fame, as the firm's involvement in political scraps of the highest order helped cement its reputation inside the Beltway and beyond.

Put Up Your Dukes

Jones Day has squared off against some of the nation's most powerful policymakers, starting in 1952, when the firm stood up to Harry Truman over the seizure of U.S. steel mills during the Korean War. Years later, Jones Day litigator H. Chapman "Chappie" Rose made the wise decision to turn down Richard Nixon's entreaty for representation during the Watergate investigation. In 1980, the firm stormed the front pages yet again by suing Jimmy Carter for his gas tax (a case launched in cooperation with the Independent Gasoline Marketers Council) and then defending Ronald Reagan in a scuffle over federal elections funds.

Clients Come First

The firm's DC connections, however, extend beyond the White House: U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, nine-term U.S. Congresswoman Jane Harman and former U.S. Solicitor General and Harvard Law School Dean Erwin Griswold are all Jones Day alumni. Managing partner Stephen Brogan worked at the U.S. Department of Justice from 1981 to 1983, serving as Deputy Assistant Attorney General. The firm's alumni shine outside of the political arena too-Nextel founder Morgan O'Brien, McKinsey Company founder Marvin Bower, and Nobel laureate David Morse used to grace the halls of the firm.

Over the years, Jones Day and its attorneys have picked up numerous awards from the likes of the Children's Law Center, the Labor and Employment Relations Association, Law360 and Chambers. The kudos aren't just for savvy practice and involvement in major deals and cases-for over a decade Jones Day lawyers have been ranked among BTI Consulting Group's Client Service All-Stars. It's one of only eight firms in the United States to earn such a consistent record on BTI's ranking, which compiles feedback from corporate counsel to identify attorneys who provide the best client service in the nation.

Among the companies that have come to rely on Jones Day's service are The Sherwin-Williams Company, which the firm has defended in lead paint suits; retail giant Macy's, which has sought representation on employment issues and consumer class action suits; Proctor Gamble, which regularly seeks advice from the firm in the areas of M&Amp;A, litigation and IP, to name a few; and Chrysler LLC, which hired Jones Day as restructuring counsel during its headline-grabbing bankruptcy proceedings. According to the firm, it represents over half the Fortune 500, and has maintained relationships with most of its clients for over a decade.

Calculated Growth

Jones Day opens new office in Detroit bringing the total office count to 17 in the United States and 42 worldwide.
