University of Maryland University College / UMUC Online | College Degrees, Courses Education Online

The University of Maryland University College originally began as an extension of evening class program offered during the 1920s at the University of Maryland. By 1970, UMUC had become an independent university, part of the University System of Maryland in 1988. UMUC is notable for its overseas onsite classes offered at more than 150 different military installations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The University of Maryland University College allows students to choose between traditional campus classes or its many distance education offerings. With its main campus located in Adelphi, Maryland, the school also maintains satellite campuses throughout the state, as well as in 22 other countries, including many throughout Europe and Asia.

The school attracts thousands of non-traditional students, most of whom work full-time jobs outside of school. Distance education students can complete classes from anywhere in the world, earning online degrees without ever setting foot on campus.

UMUC is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Middle States Commission on Higher Education. This agency grants accreditation to schools in states including Maryland Delaware, New Jersey and New York. Students enrolled in a distance education option can be sure that other educational institutions and employers will respect their online degrees.

Students can apply to the University of Maryland University College online or by contacting an enrollment specialist. Admission requires students to pay a $50 non-refundable fee and submit official copies of academic transcripts. Prospective students must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in any previous college-level work.

All UMUC students can complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to see if they qualify for grants and loans. Students can also complete a UMUC scholarship application to receive a private scholarship through the school.

Students who have served in the military or are currently serving should contact the school to learn about specialized scholarship and financial aid options that may be available. Distance education students are also eligible to receive financial aid for any of UMUC's online degree programs.

UMUC alumni often work in business management, information technology, criminal justice, healthcare administration and education. The University of Maryland University College offers 43 undergraduate certificates, 23 bachelor's degrees, 38 graduate certificates, 18 master's degrees and one doctoral degree. The wide variety of educational options ensures that students have many different career alternatives after graduating.
