Ga. House approves regulations for pain clinics
Wednesday, February 20, 2013
ATLANTA — The Georgia House of Representatives has approved a proposal that calls for the state to license and regulate businesses that call themselves pain management clinics.
House Bill 178 is a response to a flood of so-called 'pill mills,' unregulated businesses that are credited with feeding prescription drug abuse. The 150-15 vote sends the measure to the Senate, where similar legislation died last year without a vote.
"We don't have any laws that state law enforcement can use to stop these pill mills from operating in our communities," said Rep. Tom Weldon, R-Ringgold.
Attorney General Sam Olens has championed House Bill 178, as have law enforcement agencies around the state.
A pain clinic is defined in the bill as a medical enterprise where at least half of the patient population is being treated for

#Per Se Violated Labor Law With ‘Service Charge, ’ Inquiry Finds - The New York Times
A private event at Per Se, a restaurant with prices to match its opulent confines at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, near the luxury skyscrapers often called Billionaires Row, is yet another level of exclusivity in a dining experience where Nova Scotia lobster coddled in butter joins a menu where foie gras is followed by caviar and truffles.
In this ultraluxury world, it can almost make sense that even though the restaurant embeds the gratuity for its staff in the cost of its $310-per-person dinner prix fixe, it also demands an extra charge for private dining.
But a 20 percent “service fee” for such events, like a fancy soiree for an elopement in the private dining room, was, for a time, not destined just for the waiters who rush Italian white truffles and other delicacies to the tables, an investigation by the New York State attorney general’s office found.

A law firm specializing in nursing home abuse, Brayton Purcell LLP, states that senior citizens are subject to five main forms of elder abuse. These elders have either been physically abused, sexually abused, emotionally abused, taken advantage of financially or experienced neglect.
HelpGuide.org, a group founded by Robert and Jeanne Segal to help people deal with abuse, among other things, guides us in understanding more about this abuse. This group, also made up of health experts, writers and web professionals, has discovered that "more than half a million reports of abuse against elderly Americans reach authorities every year, and millions more cases go unreported."
HelpGuide.org has discovered some of the reasons or motivations of the abusers. In some cases, the senior is so frail that he is not able to "stand up to bullying or to fight back if attacked." Some seniors are conned or taken advantage of because they are no longer able to see, hear or think clearly.

#Garrow s Law.
Show Summary
A British period legal drama set in 18th century London and inspired by the court cases and life of pioneering 18th century barrister William Garrow.
Garrow is a talented, young barrister determined to install justice into a corrupt legal system of Georgian England. His confrontational and sometimes arrogant stance in the courtroom does not earn him any favours with the political elite and creates enemies within the criminal underground. His associate John Southouse, a solicitor, is often disapproving of Garrow's rebellious attitude, but nevertheless offers him advice and help.
Each episode features a case inspired by true legal proceedings as recorded at Old Bailey Archives: from rape and murder to high treason and corruption. The real William Garrow coined the phrase: innocent until proven guilty. in an age when defence counsel was for the minority. He was known for his forceful cross-examinations and more than once h

#Garrow - s Law
First, let me that you for your kind words about the show. It s appreciated. I m only sorry that we re not able to bring you more of Mr Garrow s exploits!
For those of you in the UK, you might find it interesting to listen to the following episode of the Radio 4 show Unreliable Evidence which was broadcast on BBC Radio4 on Boxing Day. Here is the link.
I took part in the show, hosted by former lawyer Clive Anderson along with Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, appeal court judge Sir Alan Moses, and German judge Ruth Herz. We had a great chat about the drama of the court, and courtroom drama I talked about Garrow s Law, and they played a clip too! We also had a broader discussion about the theatricality of the law.
I hope you find it interesting. Sorry for those of you who are not in the UK.
With its sets and costumes, soliloquies, suspense and dramatic revelations the courtroom is pure theatre.
Following the return of Rumpole to R
