At a women s prison in Nairobi, Kenyan inmates are taking the law into their own hands. Law classes have helped inmates launch their own appeals and defend themselves in court.

In a classroom behind bars, three inmates and a prison officer learn the basics of common law.

Inmate Rose Musyoki said these classes have given her the chance of a lifetime.

It has been my childhood dream to do law, but due to some unavoidable circumstances like lack of finance, I ve not been able to do it, said Musyoki. So when this chance came in I gave it a trial, and now I m in it, I m doing it.

And already, she s put her lessons into practice, successfully helping another inmate to appeal a sentence for kidnapping by arguing that the accused was under duress at the time.

When she went there, the prosecution had nothing against her. They never even said anything, when she raised just that defense, the prosecution was ask ... Read more »

The U.S. Department of Justice recently reported that almost 1.1 million dedicated men and women now serve in local and state law enforcement agencies, including more than 765,000 sworn police officers. This represents a ratio of one state or local law enforcement official to every 400 U.S. residents. As the number of law enforcement jobs has increased in recent years, new opportunities have surfaced for those interested in becoming police officers, deputy sheriffs and state troopers.

The position of law enforcement agencies within each state’s governmental structure influences the duties of its personnel.  As such, a state trooper is likely to have broader powers and responsibilities than a local police officer.  Although local police departments typically yield to county and state agencies, there are a number of metropolitan police departments across the country that take the lead in major operations and investigations. Some states have opted to give municipal police depar ... Read more »

#World s Top 10 Law Firms

Law is a big service-based business. Business, finance, taxation, litigation, corporate affairs, conflicts, patents, copyrights, antitrust, property, labor, arbitration, as well as administration, political, and social matters all require law expertise (advisory or enforcement). This article gives a brief overview of the top law firms based on recent revenue numbers available at the time of writing this article. While there are other criteria to rank law firms (such as revenue per partner/lawyer, number of lawyers, or year-on-year percent growth), annual revenue remains the most accurate, consistent, and easy to follow:

  1. Baker McKenzie. Founded in 1949 and headquartered in Chicago, Baker McKenzie employs 4200 lawyers with 77 offices across 47 different countries. It recently surpassed its nearest competitor, DLA Piper, in terms of reported revenues to get to the top slot with $2.54 billion (as of June 2014).

Baroness Butler-Sloss, the former President of the Family Division of the High Court, is leading a drive to overhaul the current laws, which date back to Victorian times, completely replacing the notion of neglect with a new crime of child maltreatment .

For the first time, inflicting emotional and psychological harm on children would be treated as seriously as causing physical injuries or abandoning them.

It follows a string of cases in which the authorities have failed to step in early enough despite warning signs of neglect and abuse, including the Baby P case and the Edlington torture scandal.

Baroness Butler-Sloss, now a cross-bench peer, has helped draft an amendment to the Government s Crime and Courts Bill, which is currently being considered by a committee of MPs, to overhaul the neglect laws, with the support of the charity Acton for Children.

The current law on wilful neglect is governed by the Children and Young Persons Act 1933.

#Five routes into a law career if you don t have a degree

Being a lawyer requires grit and determination, a genuine commitment to do good and support society. One thing being a lawyer doesn't require, is a degree.

The old fashioned perception of becoming a lawyer includes posh schools, top universities and lots of cash. But the landscape is changing, along with generations of lawyers who have chosen to take a slightly different path, the vocational path.

A new generation of online Master of Law (LL.M.) programs offered by highly ranked law schools are transforming the legal education landscape. Though distance learning programs were once viewed with skepticism by professionals and educators, recent developments in communications technology have made it possible for top-tier institutions of higher learning to offer online programs. These institutions have begun to offer the same faculty, curricula and degrees associated with their prestigious schools in a more flexible and accessible online format.

Online education has existed since the early days of the Internet, but initially met with justifiable skepticism. How can a truly dynamic educational experience occur when professors and students never meet face to face? How does one evaluate the quality of an online degree? For-profit universities, questionably accredited institutions and websites that sell meaningless degrees cast a shadow over distance learning programs. But tod ... Read more »

#Worst law schools

Whittier Law School in Orange County, California is, officially, the worst law school in the United States. Appalachian School of Law edges out the University of Law Verne College of Law and several other richly deserving candidates for second-worst place.

Whittier, Appalachian and La Verne essentially tied for the uncoveted bottom spot, but Whittier “won” the tiebreaker, thanks to a pitiful 17.1 percent employment score. In addition Whittier’s 61 percent under-employment score is the highest among all ABA-approved schools.

Appalachian School of Law in the rural, westernmost reaches of Virginia appears very close to the bottom in all but two categories: under-employment and cost. Also, the number of students that ASL does not categorize for employment purposes (the “unknown employment” score) is notably high.

The third-place University of La Verne College of Law ranks dead last among the 194 law schools that “U.S. News” ranks by academic p ... Read more »

‘Kicked directly into touch’ means that the ball was kicked into touch without landing on the playing area, and without touching a player or the referee.

Stanford’s Graduate School of Business has leapfrogged the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Columbia Business School to become the most expensive two-year MBA program in the world, according to an analysis by Poets Quants. This year Stanford is telling applicants that the estimated cost of its two-year, full-time MBA program is a whopping $185,054, a new record.

That is some $18,242 more than Stanford said it would cost an MBA student only two years ago when Columbia was the school with the most expensive MBA program in the world. At that time, Columbia estimated that the cost to attend its MBA program was $168,307, while third-place Stanford’s price tag was $166,812. In just two years, Stanford’s estimated cost of the degree has risen by 10.9%, though the estimate includes a $4,000 global study trip.

Family law is a comprehensive body of law that deals with family relationships. It stipulates the rights and obligations of parties in domestic relations. Family law covers a wide range of topics, including marriage, divorce, child custody, visitation, alimony, and adoption.

Marriage, civil union, and domestic partnership are different kinds of legal statuses recognized by family law. Marriage is a legal relationship between two persons, in which the parties, the husband and the wife, are bound by the rights and obligations stipulated in the marital contract. A civil union is a legal relationship between a same sex couple. Civil unions are also known as civil partnerships. The rights and obligations in a civil union are similar to those in a marriage. In a domestic partnership, partners live together and have a common domestic life, but without being bonded by marriage or a civil union.

Adoption is governed by domestic relations law procedure. Adoption is a legal pro ... Read more »

Employment and labor laws in the State of California are often described as stringent for covered employers yet protective of employees. Despite all of this, there are still employees, as well as applicants, who are subjected to unfair workplace treatment. Instances of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation still continue to happen in a lot of workplaces, resulting in claims and lawsuits filed against erring employers. Fortunately, there are various agencies in the state that investigate claims of workplace discrimination in an aggressive manner, as well as going after erring employers that commit statute and regulation violations respective of the employment and labor laws in California.

One of these agencies is the Department of Industrial Relations or DIR. For any labor law violation employers commit, there is a certainty that affected employees can assert their rights against them by filing claims with the agency. There is a practice called Physician self-referral. This is when a physician refers a patient to a medical facility, which he has part ownership, financial interests or investment in. It is thought to be a conflict of interest that a physician will stand to benefit from referring patients to his medical facility for health services. This self-referral practice has a potential to be abused because the physician may over-refer patients for services that may or may not be necessary. That is why; the law was developed to prevent such self-referral practices.

The Stark Law was passed by the federal government to prevent physician self referral and does not allow a physician to refer Medicare or Medicaid patients to facilities that are owned by the physician or a member of the physician s immediate family, unless it is under exception.
