Law enforcement agency (LEA ) is a term used to describe either an organization that enforces the laws of one or more governing bodies, or an organization that actively and directly assists in the enforcement of laws. In doing so, the LEA assists the governing bodies to provide governance for their subjects.

LEAs which have their ability to apply their powers restricted in some way are said to operate within a jurisdiction .

Non executive powers jurisdictional coverage of Europol.

LEAs will have some form of geographic restriction on their ability to apply their powers. The LEA might be able to apply its powers within a country, for example the United States of America's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, within a division of a country, for example the Australian state Queensland Police, or across a collection of countries, for example international organizations such as Interpol, or the European Union's Europol. #U. S. Department of Labor - Civil Rights Center: Internal Statutes & Regulations: What do I need to know about. WORKPLACE HARASSMENT

WORKPLACE HARASSMENT

Under federal law and Department of Labor (DOL) policy, harassment by DOL employees of DOL employees based on race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity and pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, or parental status is prohibited. The Department of Labor does not permit harassing conduct by anyone in the workplace, including contractors.

Prohibited workplace harassment may take either of two forms. It may entail "quid pro quo" harassment, which occurs in cases in which employment decisions or treatment are based on submission to or rejection of unwelcome conduct, typically conduct of a sexual nature. Workplace harassment may also consist of offensive conduct based on one or more of the protected groups above that is so severe or pervasive that it ... Read more »

Undergraduate grade-point average and LSAT score rule the roost in law school admissions, so medians and quartiles are the best measures to help a potential applicant to gauge his competitiveness. Still, USC Law admits people - not numbers - and the admissions committee looks to form a class with more than just measurable smarts. In an interview with TLS. Dean Robert Rasmussen explains:

At USC, we enroll students from a variety of backgrounds who are united by their intelligence and passion. We look for a broad range of students who will bring very different life experiences to our intellectual community .and a variety of perspectives to the classroom .We therefore take pride in building a student body as diverse, complex and interesting as our city and our country.(iii)

While numbers are important, Southern Cal reviews each applicant's entire file, including personal statements and letters of recommendation. Candidates should apply through the Law School Admi ... Read more »

by Mark Shead on March 15,

I ve seen a lot of questions recently by programmers on Slashdot, Reddit and Stack Overflow basically asking:

I m writing code, but I m not very good.  What can I do to change that?

For people in that position who already have a bachelors degree (but not necessarily in software engineering or CS), I d suggest a little known educational gem.  The ALM in IT degree focused on software engineering from Harvard s Extension School is an excellent program that will often meet the needs of people who find themselves in the position above. It offers a good education and it one of the least expensive ways to get a master s degree for someone interested in software engineering. In this article I want to describe the program, my experience and go through class by class and discuss what I found useful.

I completed a master s degree (ALM in IT) from Harvard with a concentration in software engineering last year. Most of my classes were t ... Read more »

In North American English, a Law enforcement agency (LEA ) is an organisation that enforces the law.

LEAs will have some form of geographic restriction on their ability to apply their powers. The LEA might be able to apply its powers within a country, for example the United States of America 's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. within a division of a country, for example the Australian state Queensland Police. or across a collection of countries, for example international organizations such as Interpol. or the European Union 's Europol .

LEAs which operate across a collection of countries tend to assist in law enforcement activities, rather than directly enforcing laws, by facilitating the sharing of information necessary for law enforcement between LEAs within those countries, for example Europol has no executive powers [ 1 ] .

Sometimes a LEA’s jurisdiction is determined by the complexity or seriousness o ... Read more »

Compose a list of the top 10 elements that are important to you in a college or university. For example: Programs of study ("Majors"); tuition cost ( possibly room/board and travel), size of the school (and number of students), class size (including faculty/student ratio), geographical location, admission criteria (HS grades SAT scores), campus life, reputation of faculty, extra-curricular activities offered. Include any other criteria not mentioned, if it's a factor in your decision.

Assign a value between 1 and 5 to each element. The most important element would receive a 5 and 1 means that it's not really important at all. You can assign the same number to more than 1 element.

Create a list of the colleges and universities that interest you. The College Board provides a free online search function that returns a list of schools that match the criteria you enter. European Union law (commonly referred to as Union Law, historically called "European Community law") is a body of treaties and legislation, such as Regulations and Directives, which have direct effect or indirect effect on the laws of European Union member states. The three sources of European Union law are primary law, secondary law and supplementary law. The main sources of primary law are the Treaties establishing the European Union. Secondary sources include regulations and directives which are based on the Treaties. The legislature of the European Union is principally composed of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. which under the Treaties may establish secondary law to pursue the objective set out in the Treaties.

European Union law is applied by the courts of member states and where the laws of member states provide for lesser rights European Union law can be enforced by the courts of member states. In case of European Union law which ... Read more »

I. Introduction

This research guide is an introduction to the basic legal materials of modern English law (see English Legal History for historical research). This research guide applies only to the law of England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate court systems, which, while similar, are not identical. This guide does not include information on European Community law, which may be binding on English courts. For guidance with researching EU law, see the European Union research guide. If you are beginning a comprehensive legal research project, refer to the sections of this guide that describe secondary sources first (e.g. sections IX through XI).

Some comparative notes to remember:

  1. There is no written English constitution (i.e. there is no one single document called the constitution); constitutional law concerns issues such as the role of the state, the protection of individual rights, etc. (see e.g. Anthony King, ... Read more »

(Redirected from Attorney )

This article relates to the profession as practiced in the United States. For a more general discussion, see Lawyer. For discussion of powers granted to an Attorney-in-Fact, see Power of attorney. For the Japanese profession, see Attorney at law (Japan) .

An attorney at law. or simply an attorney or lawyer. in the United States is a person licensed to practice law. usually by the highest court of a state or other jurisdiction. Alternate terms include attorney-at-law and attorney and counselor (or counsellor) at law .

Broadly speaking, an "attorney" is one who acts on behalf of another person in some capacity. For example, an "attorney-in-fact" is a kind of agent who acts on behalf of another person, typically with respect to business, property, or personal matters, and who does not have to be licensed to practice law or to have any other license from the government. The layman's answer would be something along the lines of actions that are in opposition to the laws (statutes) that govern the country. Law students who begin their studies in Criminal Law will grow to realise that a "crime" constitutes many facets which go beyond the "bad act" itself (the actus reus). In looking at whether a person is a "criminal", one has to look at the mental state the person had while committing the crime(his "mens rea"). It would be worthwhile to remember that every person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This is a subject listing of resources for legal forms.

Practicing lawyers require sample versions of standard legal documents known as model forms. There are sets of forms for federal practice, for most states, and for specialized subject areas. Some sets of forms include annotations, checklists, and citations to cases in which the forms were used. Most law firms maintain in-house collections of forms relating to their specific areas of practice. Generally, there are two kinds of forms:

instruments. which are used to complete transactions between private parties in business, real estate, estate planning, etc. and

pleadings. which are filed in court.

Model forms of both types of legal documents can be found in the library, in books, looseleafs, electronic databases, and the Internet. Remember to browse the shelves for additional form books shelved close to the following titles of books and looseleafs for each ... Read more »

Please note that posting requirements vary by statute; that is, not all employers are covered by each of the Department's statutes and thus may not be required to post a specific notice. Some people believe that vehicle window tinting keeps the temperature inside a car cooler, while others just think window tinting makes a car look cooler. And in some cases, drivers or passengers may have a legally recognizable medical need to have tinted vehicle windows, even when the tint level would otherwise violate their state's vehicle code.

Whatever your reason for wanting tinted windows on your car, truck, or other passenger vehicle, you should get familiar with laws that regulate vehicle window tinting, as well as exemptions under those laws. Here you will find basic information on window tinting laws, "medical necessity" exemptions, and more. (also see: State-Specific Information on Vehicle Window Tint Laws )

#Wills, probate and inheritance.

When someone dies, you’ll need to get the legal right to deal with their property, money and possessions (their ‘estate’).

England and Wales

You may be able to apply for a ‘grant of representation’ - known as ‘probate’.

You can apply yourself or use a solicitor or another person licensed to provide probate services.

Most cases follow the same basic process.

Pay any Inheritance Tax that’s due.

Collect the estate’s assets, eg money from the sale of the person’s property.

Pay any debts, eg unpaid utilities bills.

Distribute the estate - this means giving any property, money or possessions to the people entitled to it (‘beneficiaries’).

A grant of representation can sometimes be known as a ‘grant of probate’, ‘letters of administration’ or ‘letters of administration with a will’.

When a grant of representation may not be needed

#Women s Aid - The Survivor s Handbook - Your legal rights

Domestic violence is dealt with both under the criminal law and the civil law. The two systems are separate and are administered by separate courts:

  • The civil law is primarily aimed at protection (or in some cases compensation). A survivor of domestic violence can make an application for an injunction (a court order) either to the Family Proceedings Court or the County Court (usually through her solicitor). Other family proceedings (such as child contact or divorce) also take place in the County Court.
  • The criminal law is primarily aimed at punishing the offender. The police together with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) initiate the process. Criminal cases are heard in either the Magistrates' Court or the Crown Court depending on the severity of the charge.

In other words, we take abstract statutory and regulatory requirements and develop memorable, understandable and enjoyable visual equivalents. We take your clay and give you back a pot.

Why Traffic Law? It s the road user s guide to survival.

Assumptions are the legs of behavior. When on the road they take us in front of cars we believe will yield, past pedestrians we think will wait, in front of bicyclists we know should stop. We assume what we believe is correct. But is it?

False assumptions about traffic laws is why ATLC is building a feedback loop in which road users can find needed answers to traffic law questions. We hope our efforts help clear up your con ... Read more »

Though Aristotle is often referred to as “the father of natural law,” [1] this appellation is debatable and arises primarily from the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas. The Stoics asserted that the universe existed according to a rational and purposeful order (a divine or eternal law), and that the means by which a rational being lived in accordance with this order was the natural law, which dictated actions that accorded with virtue. Some of the early Church Fathers sought to incorporate this concept of natural law into Christianity. Thomas Hobbes defined natural law as the way in which a rational human being, seeking to survive and prosper in society, would act. Natural law theories influenced the development of English common law [2]. and featured in the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas, Francisco Suarez. Thomas Hobbes, Hugo Grotius. Samuel von Pufendorf. and John Locke. The concept of natural rights was incorporated in the United States Declaration of Independence .

How did a Harvard MBA help you to become a tech entrepreneur? What do you make of arguments that an MBA is not necessary, even distracting to spend 2 years in school (and in debt) rather than focusing entirely on a business? What suggestions could you make to someone who wants to become a tech entrepreneur/VC as regards pursuing an MBA or not? P

The Harvard MBA says:

Great questions P, and ironically enough, they have overlapping answers.  Let s tackle them one at a time:

1) At the time I was an MBA student (fall 1998 - spring 2000), it was a golden era for MBA students in tech entrepreneurship.  The dot com bubble was in full swing, and the working theory was that MBA students were young enough to understand this brave new world, but had the business knowledge to monetize the Internet.  For the most part, this theory was dead wrong, but it allowed me to do things like start a company over the summer and ... Roman law is the legal system of ancient Rome. The development of Roman law covers more than one thousand years from the law of the twelve tables (from 449 BC ) to the Corpus Juris Civilis of Emperor Justinian I (around 530 ). Roman law as preserved in Justinian's codes became the basis of legal practice in the Byzantine Empire and later in continental Europe .

Using the term Roman law in a broader sense, one may say that Roman law is not only the legal system of ancient Rome but the law that was applied throughout most of Europe until the end of the 18th century. In some countries like Germany the practical application of Roman law lasted even longer. For these reasons, many modern civil law systems in Europe and elsewhere are heavily influenced by Roman law. This is especially true in the field of private law. Even the English and North American Common law owes some debt to Roman law although Roman law exercised much less influence on the English legal ... Read more »

#Workers Comp In-Depth

Workers' compensation refers to a system of laws outlining specific benefits to which injured employees are entitled. and the procedures for obtaining such benefits. Every state has its own workers' compensation laws, which are contained in statutes, and vary somewhat from state to state. In addition, there are special workers' compensation laws for employees of the federal government, and still others for workers in specific types of industries such as railroad employees.

Under the law in most states, every business must have some form of workers' compensation insurance to cover injured employees. Filing a workers' compensation claim is similar to filing an insurance claim; it isn't a lawsuit against an employer, but rather a request for benefits.

The Purpose and Effect of Workers' Compensation Laws

Workers' compensation laws are designed to ensure that employees who are injured on the job receive fixed monetary awards, withou ... Read more »

#An Online Law Degree: Is It For Me?

What is it really like?

So you're looking at getting an online law degree to see if they might be for you instead of "normal" law school.

Get Top Grades in Law School

there are only California registered programs!

I hope to rectify the lack of good information on online legal programs with this site.

Is an online law degree for me?

The answer to this question depends largely on why you want to go to law school.

My short conclusion, based on my own independent research and interactions with actual online law students is that short answer is that online law degrees are not for most people at the moment. I strongly suspect this could change over time, even over the next couple of years.

At the moment I think that online law schools are for a very particular kind of person, one who is:

Your online resource for Pre Law Degree and Career Information. Legal studies, also known as pre law degree programs, are available from many different colleges and universities. Typically, a law student must obtain a bachelor's degree in pre law or a related field before applying to law school and being accepted. Having a high GPA, LSAT score, and a diverse background with experience in legal internships can always help to improve the chances of acceptance into highly selective law programs. A pre law degree will teach things like legal ethics, case law research, legal drafting and writing, and computer proficiency. Prerequisites and core classes will also be required here, which will usually include English, communications, and other basic classes that can aid in a law degree pursuit. The law field is highly selective, but it also has plenty of potential for future growth. Students who are considering a pre law degree need to work hard to become the best that they can be so that t ... Read more »

Affirmative action is the process of a business or governmental agency in which it gives special rights of hiring or advancement to ethnic minorities to make up for past discrimination against that minority. Affirmative action has been the subject of debate, with opponents claiming that it produces reverse discrimination against Caucasians. Affirmative action programs are governed by a number of overlapping laws. A common principle is that whether for admissions or employment, affirmative action programs such as targeted recruitment and goals are encouraged to remedy past effects of discrimination; quotas are disfavored. Affirmative action in American employment law has evolved through a series of governmental proclamations, court decrees, and voluntary programs instigated by employers in the private sector. Private employers who receive no public funding are not required to adopt affirmative action policies. Affirmative action policies are enforced by the entities adopting them if ... Read more »

#Annual Ranking Highlights The Most Prestigious Law Firms In The U. S.

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

Top law firms are known for long hours, cut-throat competition, and charging packs of eager young attorneys. But which firms have earned the strongest reputations among peers, clients, and young legal eagles themselves?

Career resource Vault has been creating their annual Law 100 ranking since 1996. Using the reviews of 17,000 law firm associates, Vault ranks firms on a scale of one to 10, according to associates’ perceptions of the firms’ “prestige.” Respondents are not allowed to rank their own firms and are asked to comment only on those firms with which they are familiar.

The ranking provides valuable information both to candidates contemplating the search for a summer associate position, as well as to the firms themselves and their clients.

#Annual Program Planning

Your Annual Troop Program Plan = Satisfied Boy Scouts and families = A lifelong love of Scouting!

Dear Committee Chair, Scoutmaster, and Senior Patrol Leader:

Let's talk about one of the key elements of all successful troops and an indicator of a potentially successful year. Of course that would be the troop's annual program plan and planning conference.

Research conducted by Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, showed that a common element of strong troops is they all have a good annual program planned a year in advance that is then shared with all families in the form of a calendar. The important result of a shared annual program calendar is that your troop will attract more families and Boy Scouts will stay involved longer.

Two other key elements of successful troops identified in that study were training and having just the right leader to start with.

Here's how a troop program planning conference works. A month ... Read more »
