Distracted Driving Laws by Region

Distracted driving is a serious international issue. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, drivers who use a cell phone – handheld or hands-free – face a fourfold increase in the risk of a crash serious enough to injure the driver and that texting while driving can significantly degrade driving performance.

As accident and traffic incident statistics climb, nations, states and provinces are taking steps to reduce distracted driving due to cell phone use and text messaging.

In some areas, handheld cell phone use is a secondary offense, which means you can only be cited if you are pulled over for something else, such as speeding. In others, you can be pulled over for talking on your handheld cell phone and even be asked to pay your fine on the spot.

As you plan your trip, take the time to familiarize yourself with the distracted driving laws for every place you plan to drive. If necessary, buy a hands-free device for your cell phone before you begin your vacation.
