One of the great things about our economy is that you are free to negotiate whatever works best for you. That said, there is one great truth in a free-market economy: You get what you pay for.

I can also tell you that a good realtor busts his or her backside for you. Between marketing (print, Web, in-person and direct mail), staging, open houses, helping with pricing, and negotiating on your behalf, I and many agents I know work really hard. And I get great results, often getting a sale in just a few days.

Another thing to consider is that many for-sale-by-owners think they are doing a great job when they get a lot of traffic in their home, but many times they don't realize that realtors are sending people by TO SELL THEIR OWN LISTINGS. For instance, if you over-price at $900K on a property worth $800K, and the realtor's goal is to sell a property really worth $900K, guess where realtors send their client first? Yup. Your place.

Additionally, a good realtor knows who the best home inspectors are. We have access to competitive mortgage choices and many options that the average buyer or seller don't even know are out there.

So you can definitely sell your own home, but at the end of the day you may get the best results working with an aggressive, dedicated realtor who's dedicated to your success.
