A new state law effective today will allow hunters to use suppressors on guns; permit Ohioans to buy rifles, shotguns and ammunition from any state; and implement a more-rigorous background check for concealed-carry permits.

It also reduces the training required to get one of those permits from 12 hours to eight, including some of it online for the first time; changes the definition of an “automatic” weapon; and makes concealed-c ... Read more »

#Lemon laws protect you: Car News

You used to have Buckley's chance of returning a dreaded lemon to the car dealer for a replacement or a refund.

As for being compensated for the inconvenience, aggravation, lost income and costs racked up while taking the car from hell to the dealer for a further non-fix under warranty, well, make that virtually no chance either.

Many Australian consumers have tried but only a few very determined people have succeeded, usually after long, expensive battles against squads of car company lawyers in various courts.

The new Australian Consumer Law (ACL), developed by the states and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, came into force on January 1 this year. It's not as tough as US lemon laws, but it gives you much more protection than the maze of state and federal consumer regulations you previously had to navigate to make a case that your car resembled a particularly bitter variety of citrus fruit.

#Let s NOT Kill All The Lawyers: Why Law School Is Still Worth The Investment

Follow Comments Following Comments Unfollow Comments

“The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers,” shouts Dick the Butcher in Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part II .

Since the 2008 recession, that’s what some think the American economy has conspired to do.

But let’s hope that what many have deemed a “crisis” for legal education doesn’t drive smart, principled students away from law. That would be a tremendous loss for our country. Our society doesn’t work without well-educated legal leaders dedicated to preserving America’s commitments to the Constitution and fair legal frameworks for dispute resolution.

Democracy requires the effective application of legal principles and rules in political life; capitalism requires legal checks to ensure fair competition in the economic sphere and protect the rights of employees, consumers, shareholders, and owners alike; and, n ... Read more »

#List of U. S. Schools - amp; Universities for Aspiring Lawyers

Aspiring lawyers need to attend a 3-year law school after earning their bachelor's degree. In order to gain acceptance into law school, a student must earn an acceptable score on the LSAT exam.

How to Select a Law School

Prospective law schools must be approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). There are only about 200 ABA-accredited schools in the United States. The school's curriculum should offer classes in economics, federal and state law, history, public speaking, philosophy and government. These are in addition to specific law courses, such as securities regulation, criminal trial advocacy and counsel interviewing.

Schools that feature practice and mock trials may be very attractive to prospective students. Trials allow students to gain practical courtroom experience, and they are overseen by faculty members. The school should also offer part-time summer and winter work opportunitie ... Read more »

#What You Can Expect To Make With An MBA From A Top School - Poets and QuantsPoets and Quants

What You Can Expect To Make With An MBA From A Top School

How valuable is an MBA degree? You can answer that question in any number of ways. But the bottom-line answer might well be how much money you will earn immediately upon graduation.

Anyway you look at it, 2014 was a very good year for average salary and bonus. At many schools, including Harvard and Stanford, it was the first year that average pay exceeded pre-recession levels. The $144,750 average commanded by Harvard MBAs was finally above the $144,261 that members of the Class of 2008 received. The $142,834 average by Stanford MBAs exceeded the $140,771 received by Stanford grads in 2008. And at nearly all the schools, average pay hit new record levels.

MBA graduates from 44 different business schools in the U.S. landed jobs with six-figure pay packages last year, up from 24 in 2010 when the Great Recessi ... Read more »

#LLM Guide

LLM Guide: The Basics

Like any other graduate degree, a Master of Laws (LLM) requires a prior degree in this case a Juris Doctor (JD). There are several important differences between the two degrees, the most basic being that a JD is a professional degree that enables individuals to practice law, while an LLM is an advanced graduate degree, which denotes expertise in a specific area of law, or knowledge of American law for foreign law school graduates. An LLM on its own does not enable someone to practice law.

Applicants to LLM degree programs are usually required to submit their law school transcripts, a personal statement, letters of references (varies for different LLM programs), and sometimes a passing score on an English proficiency examination such as IELTS or TOEFL. The infamous LSAT a standardized test used by law schools as a index for admissions to JD programs is not used for LLM admissions.

Once admitted, students working towards LLM ... Read more »

#LLM Info

What is an LLM? A Master of Laws, or LLM, is an advanced academic degree not to be confused with a professional degree in law, such as a Juris Doctor (JD). There are several important differences between an LLM and a JD. Lawyers typically earn an LLM for one of two reasons: to become familiar with a foreign system of law. or to gain expertise in a specific area of law .

A JD, on the other hand, allows lawyers to practice law in the United States. Some states allow lawyers with professional degrees from foreign countries to practice law in the United States if they earn an LLM focused on the American legal system, such as that offered by the online @WashULaw. but LLM regulations vary between states. Lawyers interested in taking this route to practicing law in the United States should contact their local Bar Admission Offices. An LLM earned for the sake of expertise in a narrow field of law does not affect a lawyer’s eligibility to practice law – it simply deepens a ... Read more »

#Local Elder Law Attorneys, Estate Planning and Medicaid Lawyers

What is an elder law attorney?

The specialty of "elder law" evolved in the 1980s as it became increasingly clear that the complicated legal issues confronting seniors - in particular qualifying for Medicaid coverage of long-term care - were beyond the expertise of general-practice attorneys. In recent years, we've increasingly seen the field described as "elder care law" and the lawyers as "elder care" attorneys.

Elder law or elder care attorneys typically help families:
  • plan for Medicaid coverage of long-term care, and apply for coverage when the time comes;
  • plan and administer an estate;
  • represent guardians and conservators; and
  • create and administer trusts.

Unlike many other areas of the law, elder law is defined by the needs of the client, rather than a particular field of law. Because of this, elder law attorneys are also aware that their cli ... Read more »

#Majors and Minors - Preparation for the Study of Law - Health Professions and Prelaw Center - Indiana University - University Division

Law schools do not prefer any major course of study! Allow this point to sink in: law schools are not concerned with the specific major you choose. In fact, because law schools seek broad diversity among applicants, including diversity of majors, having an unusual major is absolutely fine. You can find lists of admission rates of applicants by undergraduate major. And some have higher rates than others. But in a way, this is like listing rates of admission based on an applicant's favorite color. On such an imaginary list, some colors would have higher admission rates than others--but it is obviously NOT because of the particular color. The same is true for majors. Every year students from over 50 majors at IUB are admitted to law schools around the country. You may have also head that law schools to not like prelaw majors. This is also not true. St ... #Long Distance Law: Studying Law at Uni without being at Uni

Long Distance Law: Studying Law at Uni without being at Uni

Written by David

Law school is hard. While that might be the most self-evident statement ever typed, spare a thought for the law student completing their degree online. Although listening to lectures whenever you feel like it and being able to wear your pyjamas during “class” sounds really appealing (particularly if you’re sitting in a lecture at 9am on a Monday) distance study is not as easy as it seems.

I began studying for my law degree online and for the eighteen months of my three year JD course I barely saw a university building. Yes, I learnt equity and trusts sitting in bed wearing my Peter Alexander PJs. Even though I was extremely comfy, there was something that I was really lacking: interaction with other students.

I chose to study online due to the convenience. It allowed me to work while I studied, and yes, also beca ... Read more »

Programs of Study: Pathways Through the Harvard Law School Curriculum

Harvard Law School offers more courses and seminars than any other law school in the world. This is a tremendous resource, but the large numbers of courses, across a huge range of topics and approaches, also can be daunting as you plan your own path through the curriculum. The faculty encourages J.D. students to build on the foundation of the first year with both sufficient focus to pursue deep knowledge and with sufficient curiosity to explore a broad array of ideas about and approaches to law. Pursue your own passions, and also think about how to take advantage of opportunities for advanced work, clinical work, fellowships, and courses elsewhere in the university.

To guide you in pursuing deepening knowledge and progression as you move through the three years of law school and to create a tool for better coordination and collaboration between faculty members, the faculty has ... Read more »

Tuition and fees

Students at Loyola should be prepared to spend a considerable amount on their education. The school reports on their website that full-time tuition was $47,750 for full-time students and $31,975 for part-time students. With living expenses hovering a bit under $30,000 (Los Angeles isn't cheap!), students can end up spending roughly $77,000 a year to attend Loyola.

To help combat this debt, the school offers a number of its students grants and scholarships. In the school's most recent ABA data. 368 out of 1,287 total students received grant money. #Map of motorcyle helmet laws

Motorcycle helmet use

Motorcycle helmet laws vary widely among the states and have changed a lot in the past half a century. Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, known as universal helmet laws. Laws requiring only some motorcyclists to wear a helmet are in place in 28 states. There is no motorcycle helmet use law in three states (Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire).

In the past, many more states had universal helmet laws, thanks to pressure from the federal government. In 1967, states were required to enact helmet use laws in order to qualify for certain federal safety programs and highway construction funds. The federal incentive worked. By the early 1970s, almost all the states had universal motorcycle helmet laws. However, in 1976, states successfully lobbied Congress to stop the Department of Transportation from assessing financial penalties on states without helme ... Read more »

A 24-year-old Omaha man who was killed last week in a rollover accident will be awarded an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Antwaun Rollerson was on track to graduate in December from UNO before the July 10 crash at the intersection of 42nd Street and Sorensen Parkway. A UNO spokesman said the school is working to set up a private ceremony for Rollerson’s family.

Omaha police said speed was a factor in the accident that killed Rollerson and that Rollerson had not been using a seat belt. Police stopped short of saying whether the seat belt would have saved his life. His 16-year-old brother, Jarrell Walker, was using a seat belt and walked away uninjured.

    #Maritime law

    Admiralty: An Overview

Admiralty law or maritime law is the distinct body of law (both substantive and procedural) governing navigation and shipping. Topics associated with this field in legal reference works may include: shipping; navigation; waters; commerce; seamen; towage; wharves, piers, and docks; insurance; maritime liens; canals; and recreation. Piracy (ship hijacking) is also an aspect of admiralty.

The courts and Congress seek to create a uniform body of admiralty law both nationally and internationally in order to facilitate commerce.
