Portland State University's Division of Criminology & Criminal Justice provides an online bachelor's degree completion program for those seeking to pursue a criminology & criminal justice degree. In addition, four certificate programs are available to those seeking to specialize in key criminal justice areas. There are a variety of career paths for those who receive a high-quality criminal justice education. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts double-digit growth in the criminal justice field through the end of the decade. Amazingly diverse opportunities exist for dedicated and educated individuals who are interested in a future in these career areas:
  • Law Enforcement – Police Officer, Detective, Special Investigator, State Trooper, Community Relations Officer, Crime Analyst
  • Corrections – Corrections Officer, Correctional Counselor, Parole Officer, Probation Officer
  • Federal Agencies – Border Patrol Agent, Game Enforcement Agent, U.S. Marshal, FBI Agent, CIA Agent, Secret Service Agent, ICE Agent
  • Social Services – Behavioral Disorder Counselor, Treatment Specialist, Victim Advocate, Policy Analyst, Youth Counselor, Crime Prevention Coordinator, and more

Portland State University’s Online Criminology & Criminal Justice Bachelor’s Degree program is ideal for professionals who are already working in the field, as well as for individuals interested in pursuing a career in this area. In addition to the degree program curriculum, PSU also offers several certificate programs that can build knowledge in special areas of interest:

  • Advanced Crime Analysis Certificate - Conduct a detailed study of crime mapping and develop the analysis skills needed to research crime patterns, improve investigational operations, and help prevent crime.
  • Criminal Behavior Certificate - Examine research data around different types of criminals, the theories behind criminal behavior, and effective techniques in rehabilitation.
  • Leadership in Criminal Justice Certificate - Learn about the interactions of criminal justice agencies, the role of public and political influence, and how these factors relate to an effective leadership career.
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Criminology & Criminal Justice - For those who already have a bachelor’s degree, this certificate helps students gain a greater understanding of the diverse disciplines that create the criminal justice profession including government, law enforcement, corrections, healthcare, psychology, sociology, statistics, and more.

The PSU bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 180 credits. Of those, 72 must be upper-division. Almost all universities have general education requirements. Please contact an Enrollment Advisor for more information.

In addition, all students must complete a 12-credit Upper Division Cluster and a Senior Capstone. Students will need to complete 24 credits of CCJ elective coursework. Based on the number of transfer credits, additional courses may be required. See CCJ Core Coursework below.
