#Environmental and Energy Law

LLM/JSD

The Big Picture

The specialized LLM in Environmental and Energy Law is designed for foreign-trained and US lawyers interested in careers in environmental, land use, and energy law. Individuals who aim to work for governments, international organizations, or NGOs; who aspire to cutting edge private practice with law firms; or who will pursue academic careers, study with leading experts in these areas. Each year students in the program form a close community that enjoys the benefits of being a distinct cohort within the larger student body.

NYU is the leading institution in environmental and land use law among the top American law schools. Our faculty have established reputations for path-breaking research and scholarship that has driven policy formation in the United States on issues such as climate change, air pollution, and housing and urban development. These professors also direct 3 separate research institutions at NYU that organize conferences and workshops on environmental, energy, and land use topics with leading decision-makers, advocates, and academics. Students actively engage with our faculty and their centers’ entrepreneurial research and activities as a complement to the formal curriculum.

Energy, Law, and Policy

Recognizing the importance of the energy field and its intersections with environmental law, NYU is actively engaged in expanding its offerings related to energy law and policy. The Law School capitalizes on its location in the world’s premier financial capital by providing students with an understanding of how major energy deals are financed and assembled, and the impediments that clean energy projects face. Both Energy Law Regulation and Policy and US Energy Deals are classes being taught by leading practitioners this current academic year.

International Environmental Law

The Law School has a distinct commitment to international environmental law. We offer a specialized seminar in the area; and an International Environmental Law clinic that allows students to draft laws, regulations, and position papers, and undertake research for clients such as the UN, international organizations, NGOs, and governments of developing countries. Students benefit from NYU’s overall strength in international law by electing to pursue related subjects, such as international trade law and international human rights law, and from the school's location in this global city.

Focus on Clinics

NYU’s clinics combine intellectual inquiry with real-world practice experience by arranging for students to participate in fieldwork. Master’s students may apply for 3 such offerings that count toward the Environmental and Energy Law specialization:

Classes Outside the Law School

The Law School is a part of a premier research university and students can take classes in other parts of the university while undertaking the Environmental and Energy Law LLM. Courses at the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service in economics, and urban, transportation, and other infrastructure issues are likely to be of particular interest. With permission from the program director and Vice Dean, master’s students may take up to 6 credits at one of NYU’s other schools in completion of LLM requirements.
