Course Description

This course provides a basic preparation for bilingual individuals interested in legal interpreting.  It is designed for students who have good speaking and writing skills in both English and Spanish. This entry level course concentrates in four major categories for legal interpreters: English/Spanish grammar, Legal terminology, the US Legal System, and the basic interpreter skills needed.

Course Objectives

This course will prepare students for the written screening tests administered by the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts at the close of the mandatory North Carolina Interpreting Orientation Training sessions. However, this is a starting course and it will not prepare the students for the state certification oral exams. This is not a certification course, but an overview of legal interpreting.

Course Content

The course will cover the history of court interpreting, roles and code of ethics of the interpreter, laws relevant to legal interpreting, an overview of legal procedures, modes and techniques of interpreting, and much more!
