Online Law Degree Degree

Online law degrees are becoming more common as law schools struggle to accommodate an exploding number of enrollments. Instead students can study long distance from a wide range of accredited institutions across the nation for a Juris Doctor degree. Successful graduation from an online school allows graduates to take a bar examination in any jurisdiction just as it would for graduates of a conventional law school.

Flexibility

Following an online program allows for much flexibility than attending a traditional classroom. Whereas students may have to change their personal schedule to fit in with the requirements of the classroom, virtual classrooms allow for the student to work at their own pace; although they may still have deadlines for assignments to be completed, they can choose a time of day to study and work which fits in with their schedule.

Financial savings

Online schools are considerably cheaper than attending a bricks and mortar institution. Without having to house a specific number of students and provide equipment etc. internet based schools can pass these savings on to their students. Although an online degree is still a hefty investment, students can save tens of thousands of dollars in fees and tuition.

The Online Juris Doctor degree is the starting point in the field of law and is the first professional degree for any student. In fact, it is a rudimentary requirement for any potential attorney to practice law, and is needed by all new attorneys before they can sit for the bar examination in the jurisdiction of their choice. The program takes 3 years to complete on a full time basis but generally an online degree will take around 4 years to complete.

The J.D. covers a wide spectrum of law study including broad courses on basic contracts, criminal procedures, torts, criminal law, wills and estates, civil procedures, and a good many other subjects. Ideally candidates should have a good grasp of composition and technical writing since a lot of the study will concentrate on the reading and interpretation of legal matter such as contracts and laws etc. Although successful completion of the J.D. does not entitle a graduate to practice as an attorney, it does enable them to sit for a bar examination in their preferred area of jurisdiction. Once they have passed a bar exam then the new attorney can legally practice law.

Following a career in law isn't your average 9 – 5 job. In order to get the most from a law degree you need to possess the following traits and characteristics:
  • Enjoy arguing and putting your case across
  • Love writing
  • Be a workaholic
  • Great negotiating skills
  • Be persuasive
  • Be thick skinned
  • Be Persistent
  • Be Patient
  • Be aggressive
  • Be good at time management

Competition is fierce with graduates from top tier law schools with some of the top academic results being the most competitive. Graduates may first have to find temporary work as clerks in judicial or academic settings so as to gain experience before practicing as a fully qualified attorney.

Long term salary prospects are pretty good though with a median income being $110,590 salaried and non salaried for practising attorneys. The highest incomes are offered to those attorneys serving counsel to businesses and organisations with the lower incomes relating to state employed government lawyers. Partners in top law firms can earn significantly higher with some earning more than $300,000 although this figure takes years of dedication to reach, if ever.

These six figure incomes are not often applicable to newly graduated law students and the average income 9 months after graduation is $68,500 with the lowest income being clerks at around $48,000. However, graduates who set up their own law firms earn around $108,500 per annum. Besides the monetary rewards, most practising lawyers also receive a wide range of worthwhile benefits including medical, vision, dental and retirement. Many top law firms also offer perks to new associates such as paying off their student loans and assistance with their mortgage.
