#LawDepot Reviews

LawDepot has an extensive library of business and personal documents that can be customized, downloaded and printed. They currently have a free trial subscription that gives you unlimited access for the first seven days.

LawDepot was founded in 2001 by Ken Sawyer and serves the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. LawDepot currently has an A+ rating with the BBB. They have closed 42 complaints within the last 3 years.

The Good

LawDepot offers legal documents for business, personal, financial, estate planning and real estate needs. This includes documents such as living wills, health care directives, lease agreements, eviction notices, promissory notes, confidentiality agreements, corporation operating agreements, prenuptial agreements and more.

We like the method that LawDepot has in place for creating certain legal documents. It will first ask you what state you are in and then a series of questions where you will either answer the questions by filling in the blanks, clicking a bubble, or by checking a box. It takes your answers and puts them into the appropriate spots of the document where you can then open, save, print, share, or edit the document. We felt that this process made creating legal documents an easy task to do.

LawDepot offers several different pricing options: you can choose to subscribe for a yearly or monthly subscription, pay per document, or take advantage of the seven-day free trial. An account is free to create. The yearly subscription costs $95.88 annually and allows you to create and print as many documents as you’d like. The monthly subscription costs $33.00 per month and includes unlimited document creation and printing. It can be cancelled at any time. The a la carte option can cost $10-$35.00 depending on the document type and the state that you live in.

If you have questions or need assistance, you can contact LawDepot through the live online chat feature, the help center or the 855-number. These contact options are featured in the header of the site under the “Help” tab. You can also use the online form on the homepage to ask legal questions and receive an answer from one of LawDepot’s 24 online lawyers.

If you are looking for more information about legal topics in general, LawDepot has a great blog that covers topics such as real estate, business, personal, family, and finance. LawDepot has taken the time to explain each document and the importance of it as well as who should be using these specific kinds of documents. If looking at FAQs is your preferred method for finding information then LawDepot will work for you. They offer detailed FAQ sections that will most likely answer all of your questions.

LawDepot also offers a satisfaction guarantee. If a customer isn t satisfied with their document then they be refunded within 50 days. If that isn t enough for you to try out LawDepot then maybe knowing that LawDepot offers $10,000 to any customers that suffer damages from mistakes on their documents will help.

The Bad

We ve noticed that a popular service and feature that some companies in this industry are offering is on call attorneys. On call attorneys are available for members of that business. The attorneys can give legal advice, answer questions, make phone calls and send letters on your behalf. We understand that LawDepot offers an Ask a Lawyer feature but it still seems to be lacking the same kind of functionality that offering on call attorneys has. A couple of other concerns we have are:

  1. If you prepay a whole year for LawDepot s services, it will end up costing you only $7.99/month. If you want do the free trial and let the plan roll over then you will end up paying $33/month. There are other competing companies on our top recommended list that may not have as many legal documents available but definitely have more features for a lower monthly subscription price.
  2. LawDepot offers an Ask a Lawyer feature where they promise an answer to you ASAP. The service seems nice and seems like it will be free because there is nothing mentioned about paying for an answer when you are writing your question until you get through the process two steps later. You will be required to put your credit card information in order to get an answer which seems sketchy. Also, you have to do your own research to find out if the lawyer answering your question is actually a lawyer as well as what their credentials are.

LawDepot features a Law Library that includes FAQs and articles pertaining to some common legal processes, however the information is brief and not detailed. It may not provide all the information you need if you have complicated questions or extensive legal needs.

As with many of the other online legal services that we reviewed, LawDepot does not mention whether their documents are fully reviewed by lawyers for up-to-date accuracy, nor do they explain how attorneys in their network are screened and approved. This means that it may be difficult to ensure that the documents or legal advice that you’re getting from LawDepot are accurate and high-quality. However, like we mentioned earlier in our review, LawDepot offers a $10,000 legal guarantee that will cover any damages a customer obtains as a result of LawDepot making a mistake from its documents.

The Bottom Line

If you are comfortable reviewing and filing your documents without close guidance of a lawyer, LawDepot is an easy-to-use platform for obtaining and customizing those documents. If you have ongoing legal needs or expect to need several different documents, the unlimited access you gain by signing up for the monthly or annual packages will likely save you money. However, if you’d like to guarantee that you’ll have personal access to a quality attorney, LawDepot’s Ask a Lawyer tool may not be enough for you. You may prefer to opt in to a site that includes personal legal advice as part of their subscription.
