If Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, were alive today, even he might be surprised by the sheer number and tenacity of politically savvy dog owners and animal welfare organizations.

During hearings on controversial local and state bills, legions of canine enthusiasts pack rooms to voice their support or opposition. In July 2007, animal advocates began lining up outside California s Capitol nearly two hours before a senate committee hearing on a statewide mandatory spay-neuter bill. Hundreds of people attended a hearing in Boston earlier this year when lawmakers decided to explore the idea of a statewide ban on pit bull-type dogs.

The reason for the intense interest and passionate debate is simple: Dogs have captured our hearts — so much, that 45 million U.S. households choose to share their lives with some 65 to 80 million dogs. But society s view of dogs often differs from how the legal system sees them. Under the ... Read more »

In the United States, the professional doctorate in law may be conferred in Latin or in English, as Juris Doctor (JD or J.D.) or Doctor of Jurisprudence (DJur or D.Jur.), respectively. "Juris Doctor" literally means "Teacher of Law", while the Latin for "Doctor of Jurisprudence"—Jurisprudentia Doctor —literally means "Teacher of Legal Knowledge".

Invariably an earned doctorate, the J.D./D.Jur. is equivalent in academic rank to the Doctor of Laws or Legum Doctor (LLD or LL.D.). However, while the LL.D. remains an earned doctorate in Ireland and many Commonwealth countries, it is invariably an honorary degree in the United States. [ 15 ] [ 16 ]

In Europe the first academic degrees were law degrees, and the law degrees were doctorates. Aviation: An Overview

Aviation law governs the operation of aircraft and the maintenance of aviation facilities. Both federal and state governments have enacted statutes and created administrative agencies to regulate air traffic.

Using its constitutional authority to regulate interstate and foreign commerce, Congress has enacted several federal laws pertaining to air navigation. The first of these was the 1926 Air Commerce Act, which provided for the certification and registration of aircraft employed in interstate or foreign commerce, among other things. The statute was amended in 1938 by the Civil Aeronautics Act which created the "Civil Aeronautics Authority," a five member panel with the power to regulate all aspects of aviation within federal jurisdiction. Later, a Civil Aeronautics Board replcaed the five-member panel, and most of its power was transferred to the Department of Commerce.

VICTORIA -- A liquefied natural gas industry: the British Columbia government fought an election on it, launched an extraordinary summer legislative session and made financial concessions, but it still isn't enough for the companies that want even lower taxes and have expressed concerns over the availability of workers.

The Liberal government's LNG dream is expected to move towards reality this week when a bill is adopted for a 25-year agreement on what could be B.C.'s first LNG plant.

B.C.'s politicians were recalled this month to debate and pass a single piece of legislation that aims to provide certainty to LNG investors and revenues to the province.

#Bankruptcy laws

Bankruptcy law provides for the reduction or elimination of certain debts, and can provide a timeline for the repayment of non-dischargeable debts over time. It also permits individuals and organizations to repay secured debts --typically debts with real estate and vehicles pledged as collateral -- often on more favorable terms to the borrower.

Bankruptcy law is federal statutory law contained in Title 11 of the United States Code. Congress passed the Bankruptcy Code under its Constitutional grant of authority to "establish. uniform laws on the subject of Bankruptcy throughout the United States." See U.S. Constitution Article I, Section 8. States may not regulate bankruptcy; but, they may pass laws that govern other aspects of the debtor-creditor relationship. See Debtor-Creditor. A number of sections of Title 11 incorporate the debtor-creditor law of the individual states.

    By Insure.com - Last updated: April 9,

You probably know the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, from the privacy-notification forms you have to sign at your doctor's office and pharmacy. HIPAA, enacted by the United States Congress in 1996, has two functions.

Title 1 as defined by the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services, protects health insurance for workers and their families if they change or lose jobs.

Title 2 is designed to prevent health care abuse and fraud by defining offenses and setting penalties for them.

The first part of the law was designed to ease a problem known as "job lock" the reluctance to move from one company to another for fear of losing health insurance. (Another federal law called COBRA helps you buy health insurance benefits if you lose a job. Know your COBRA rights .)

Health insurance companies have traditionally tried to control costs by using a "pre-existing conditio ... Read more »

#Biggest Supreme Court Cases Of 2013

    Getty

In the summer of 2012, the average American paid more attention than ever to the nation's highest court. That's when the justices were deciding the fate of Obamacare, which impacts virtually every American.

But Americans should be keeping a close eye on the court in 2013, too.

Business Insider reached out to some of the nation's top Supreme Court experts to find out which cases will be the biggest game-changers. Here are the cases that could change your life:

    1. Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics Inc. —  The Supreme Court is going to decide whether biotech companies can patent genes .

The case turns on two Myriad Genetics patents for genes that show whether women have an increased chance of getting breast or ovarian cancer. Cancer groups say allowing companies to patent "products of nature " could interfere with research into potential cancer cures.

    What is Traffic Violation Law?

Traffic violation law covers any number of unlawful activities involving a motor vehicle. These laws deal with moving violations like drunk driving and speeding, as well as violations based on the condition or status of a vehicle, such as expired registration. State and local governments have enacted comprehensive motor vehicle codes setting forth the traffic laws in that jurisdiction. In some states, the department of motor vehicles assesses ?points? against a driver based on the number of infractions in a given period of time. Too many points can result in an increase in insurance premiums, as well as suspension or revocation of driving privileges.

The agency in charge of enforcing a particular traffic rule will depend on the location of the traffic stop. Each local law enforcement agency has authority to issue citations in a certain geographical area, though these areas can overlap. For example, a person driving on a highway r ... Read more »

#Bans on Sharia and International Law

In a disturbing trend, anti-Muslim bigotry has recently crept into state legislatures around the country. Several states have passed or attempted to pass laws designed to prevent courts from applying Islamic or “Sharia” law, as well as “foreign” or “international law.” Some, such as a constitutional amendment passed in Oklahoma, mention Sharia specifically,  in addition to international law.  Others only mention foreign or international law. Whatever the specific terminology, all of these attempts raise serious red flags.

Efforts to single out Muslims and to advance the ugly idea that anything Islamic is un-American are unjust and discriminatory and should be rejected. Laws that single out Sharia violate the First Amendment by treating one belief system as suspect. Attempts to prevent courts from considering international or foreign law suffer from constitutional flaws and undermine the ability of courts to interpret laws and treaties r ... Read more »

Shoplifting is a crime of theft governed by state laws, which vary by state. Businesses lose billions of dollars annually as a result of shoplifting. Shoplifting laws generally define shoplifting as taking or intentionally paying less for an item than the sale price. Shoplifting can include carrying, hiding, concealing, or otherwise manipulating merchandise with the intent of taking it or paying less for it. Shoplifting laws also may be defined to include changing price tags, committing refund fraud, removing a shopping cart or any other commercial property from a store location, or intentionally using an illegitimate form of payment. An intent to shoplift may be sufficient for a shoplifting charge to be brought, even if the shoplifting was not fully carried out.

A business owner or employee may typically detain a shoplifting suspect if they have probable cause. Probable cause in the context of shoplifting laws may consist of having direct knowledge of an offender s approach ... Read more »

If you are thinking about going to Law School you may wonder how long does it take to get a Law Degree? Well, that all depends on how long do you want to be in Law School. Joking aside, here are the details.

First things first, you must obtain a bachelor degree. Granted this is a criminal justice blog, the bachelor degree program doesn’t have to be in criminal justice. But in the end, you must have one. The degree can take anywhere from 2 and 1/2 years to 4, or more. Read my post on how long does it take to complete a degree (it applies to all degree types – not only Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Political Science, or Public Safety degrees).

Thus far, you have a minimum of 2.5 years of education, and the national average of 4 years, before you can even dream of being in Law School.

Generally, a law degree takes 3 years. Three years of your life which you will have to devote entirely to school. No girlfriends, no boyfriends, no social life, no liberties ... Read more »
