from Brian Dalton, Breaking Media Director of Research

The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”

About 8 years ago a friend, (who is now my son in law) told me about a book that outlined a 40 day plan to apply the Law of Attraction. I borrowed the book and was inspired by its message.

That little book, only 96 pages started me on a journey I never anticipated. It introduced me to the Law of Attraction  and Wealth Consciousness and I haven t stopped reading and studying since.

The Law of Attraction states: I attract to myself, whatever I give my focus, attention, or energy to; whether wanted or unwanted. If you think about being broke, poor, lonely and believe your thoughts guess what? That is exactly what you ll be. This Law applies to your life and every other person s life on the planet. Like all laws, it is impartial and impersonal, which means it works when you want it to and when you don t want it to.

Everything comes to us through the most elemental law of physics Like Attracts Like! Like Attracts Like is nothing more than the  ... Read more »

#LLM GUIDE - The LL. M. in Maritime Law

Postgraduate programs remain a key port of call for careers in one of the oldest fields of law.

    By V. Wish, Jan 26, 2009

Thousands of years after the earliest known maritime law codes were written, the world remains reliant on the high seas for transportation and shipping. Over 90 percent of global trade is carried by sea, and the volume of goods shipped is increasing every year. There are now one million seafarers working on over 50,000 merchant ships registered in over 150 countries.

Given the economic importance of the industry, it is no surprise to find many lawyers specializing in Maritime Law in governments, international organizations, and the shipping and litigation departments of law firms around the world.

There are over 15 LL.M. programs worldwide that offer a focus on Maritime Law (sometimes also called Admiralty Law). Few law schools offer more than a class or two ... Read more »

    The University

We're a Jesuit, Catholic university. Our spirit comes from the nearly 500-year history of the Jesuits. It's the spirit of full-hearted engagement with profound ideas, with communities around the world, with injustice, with beauty, with the entirety of the human experience.

This is what makes us Fordham: We're a tight community in New York City, and we value and educate the whole person. Much of our Jesuit history and mission comes down to three ideas, which, translated from the Latin, mean roughly this:

    - Strive for excellence in everything you do.

    - Care for others.

    - Fight for justice.

It adds up to an education that works.

Wisdom, experience, morality, critical thinking, creative problem-solving. This is what Fordham students take into the world.

    #LLM Guide

Choosing to study for an LLM is a big choice, and there s plenty of factors that you should take into account. This handy LLM Guide will highlight matters to consider including how you undertake your LLM, funding options, LLM subjects, law schools and application tips.

    Full-time, Part-time or Distance Learning?

The difference here is pretty obvious. A full-time LLM will require a student to devote themselves entirely to the LLM, just like an undergraduate degree. You will attend lectures, participate in seminars and undertake independent study. Spending about 40 hours a week learning, a full-time LLM will take between nine and 12 months to complete.

A part-time LLM programme will also involve attending lectures and seminars. However, the times when these take place differ; the majority of part-time postgraduates continue to work whilst they study, which means their university contact hours in which they attend lectures and group ... We re not the only ones who have an obsession with names. Some of you might have caught a recent essay on baby names by New York Times columnist David Brooks in which he cited a study concluding that people named Lawrence or Laurie are disproportionately likely to become lawyers.

Anyway, this morning we came across a National Law Journal story about a law firm that has perhaps the best law firm name we ve ever heard of Payne Fears. Credit the NLJ s Amanda Bronstad for noting the funny name of this California employment law boutique which is expanding its practice and opening offices at a rapid clip.

While you may think that jobs in the legal field are limited largely to opportunities for attorneys, there are also dozens of other professional positions available to those interested in law. Although lawyers rank among the most visible and well-compensated of the positions available in the field, there are many professional paths in the legal field that don't impose the significant educational and financial resources that the completion of a law degree usually requires.

In addition to the positions available for attorneys, the field of law includes opportunities for legal secretaries, law firm administrators, paralegals, investigators, consultants, court reporters, legal assistants, clerks, document specialists, and more. In addition, there are hundreds of related opportunities available in the criminal justice field, ranging from behind-the-scenes administrators to front-line detectives and law enforcement officers.
