#Lenz s

Heinrich Emil Lenz put a definite direction to induced currents when the field was changing ( strictly when Flux is changing ). Faraday did not do this - his writings are rather confused on the matter. ( Yah can't be perfect all the time - remember - meters in the modern sense had not been invented!)

In modernish terms:

The Induced current is such as to OPPOSE the CHANGE in applied field.

This is most simply demonstrated in the animation.

  • As the magnet approaches the loop, the applied B field in the centre increases. This is a change.
  • An Induced Field is created which attempts to negate the applied field - ie to keep the total field at zero - its original value.
  • This Induced field must be associated with a current - the INDUCED CURRENT in the loop whose direction is determined by the first version of the RH rules - the one for predicting B and current - NOT the force one. Of course, the I ... Read more »

When small spherical bodies move through a viscous medium, the bodies drag the layers of the medium that are in contact with them. This dragging results in relative motion between different layers, which are away from the body. Therefore, a viscous drag comes into play, opposing the motion of the body. It is found that this backward force or viscous drag, increases with increase in velocity of the body.

According to Stoke, the viscous drag 'f'', depends on the coefficient of viscosity ' h ' of the medium, the velocity (v) of the body and radius (r) of the spherical body.

Stokes' law explains why the speed of a raindrop is less than a freely falling body with constant velocity, from the height of clouds.

The same law helps a man coming down with the help of a parachute, to slow down.

Terminal velocity refers to the constant velocity, acquired by a freely falling body in a viscous medium. Consider a small spherical body, falling freely due to gravity in ... Read more »

Eligibility

When can I use the Texas Lemon Law?

If you have purchased or leased a new motor vehicle and it develops a defect or condition that substantially impairs the motor vehicle’s use, market value or safety, you may be eligible for relief under the Texas Lemon Law. You are required to allow the manufacturer a reasonable opportunity to repair the defect(s) before you may file a complaint for lemon law relief. There is a $35 filing fee required with the submission of the Lemon Law complaint form. The number of reasonable attempts may vary based upon the defect’s effect on the normal operation of the motor vehicle.

How many “reasonable attempts” to repair a defect is the manufacturer allowed?

One way to show the dealer has had a reasonable number of attempts to fix a defect is to pass the following tests. Mileage requirements in the tests do not apply to travel trailers.

The Four Times Test

You pass this test if ... Read more »

It’s common practice among many physician groups to refer everything from blood tests to MRIs to entities from which they benefit financially. It wasn’t supposed to be that way: Congress in the 1990s passed the Stark Law, which prohibited doctors from “self-referring Medicare patients. But loopholes have kept the practice alive and well. Urologists at cancer-care giant 21 st Century Oncology Holdings Inc. for example, refer tests to the company s in-house lab, as a page-one article in The Wall Street Journal reports , taking advantage of the law s exceptions. The company says that its urologists refer tests to the in-house lab for valid medical reasons, not financial ones, and that such referrals are permitted by exceptions to the Stark law.

The Stark Law has exceptions. Under the “in-office ancillary services” exception, a doctor can refer a Medicare patient for a treatment or test to another doctor “who is a member of the same group practice” if the treatment or test is fu ... Read more »

#5 Questions You Need To Ask Before You Decide To Divorce

Rubberball/Mike Kemp via Getty Images

More than 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. Before you break your wedding vows and decide to be part of that statistic, Dr. Phil suggests you answer these five questions, which he calls his “Divorce Readiness Test”:

1. Have you done everything you can to save and rehabilitate your marriage? Have you exhausted all avenues of help for putting your marriage back together? That could mean reading books, going to a marriage counselor, speaking to a clergy member and spending time focusing on your own role in the demise of your relationship.

Ask yourself:
  • What was your marriage like when it worked?
  • When did it go wrong? Why?
  • Is what you're fighting about worth breaking up your marriage?
  • What do you want?

Ozone is a very small part of our atmosphere, but its presence is nevertheless vital to human well-being.

Most ozone resides in the upper part of the atmosphere. This region, called the stratosphere, is more than 10 kilometers (6 miles) above Earth's surface. There, about 90% of atmospheric ozone is contained in the ozone layer, which shields us from harmful ultraviolet light from the Sun.

However, it was discovered in the mid-1970s that some human-produced chemicals could destroy ozone and deplete the ozon ... Read more »

#Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Given that your time with the doctor is limited, it's helpful to prepare for the visit in advance by prioritizing the questions that are important to you. You may want to start your discussion with the doctor with a statement about your personal goal for this appointment (i.e. the main question or concern you want to address).

Let the doctor know in advance how involved you would like to be in decision-making, and how much detailed information you would like him or her to give you. Also, keep in mind that you can direct questions about financial issues or emotional support to other members of the medical team or to the Cancer Resource Center .

It is not uncommon during the first few office visits to be overwhelmed and to forget much of what is said. You might consider bringing a family member or loved one to your first few visits. Having another person there to ask questions and to review the information with you ... Read more »

#Lessons Learned the Hard Way: Cohabitation and the Law

There are many reasons cohabitating couples may cite for not getting married. Some may say that they do not need a "piece of paper" to prove their love and commitment to each other. Other couples choose to live together without getting married in order to avoid the legal entanglements that can arise should the relationship end. Couples basing their decision on the latter reason should bear in mind that although cohabitating relationships often dissolve fairly simply, that is not always the case.

Perhaps the most notorious example of the legal quagmire that can surround the end of a cohabitating partnership is the case of Lee and Michelle Triola Marvin. Lee Marvin, the famous actor, and his partner, Michelle, lived together for several years before deciding to call it quits. When they did, Michelle claimed that she was entitled to support and an equal division of the property acquired during the relationship, but the ac ... Read more »

#Lenz s Law

Lenz's Law

This is a 'stroppy' law. Basically, it rebels against everything! Lenz's Law can be described as:

The emf is induced in a direction which opposes whatever causes the induction.

The thing causing the emf to be induced is movement of the bar to the left. So the emf induced will oppose this movement. Stop the bar and emf disappears.

How could you oppose this movement?

With a force to the right, of course!

What could produce the force?

A current flowing in a conductor in a magnetic field will produce a force. So, all we need is a current in the bar in the correct direction.

Here's where Fleming comes to the rescue. Fleming's Right Hand Rule allows you to work out the direction of the current induced. (Very similar to his Left Hand Rule. but this time we are generat ... Read more »

#Lemon Laws legal definition of Lemon Laws

Lemon Laws

Laws governing the rights of purchasers of new and used motor vehicles that do not function properly and which have to be returned repeatedly to the dealer for repairs.

Laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia provide remedies to purchasers of defective new vehicles, often called lemons. These so-called lemon laws protect consumers from substantial defects occurring within a specified period after purchase and provide that a manufacturer must either replace the lemon with a new, comparable car or refund the full purchase price. According to the consumer advocate group Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, automakers repurchase 50,000 vehicles a year, about .33 percent of the 15 million vehicles sold annually.

California and Connecticut passed the first lemon laws in 1982, in response to dissatisfaction with remedies in state sales laws and the 1975 federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Ac ... Read more »

Immigration law in the United States

Federal immigration law determines whether a person is an alien, the rights, duties, and obligations associated with being an alien in the United States, and how aliens gain residence or citizenship within the United States. It also provides the means by which certain aliens can become legally naturalized citizens with full rights of citizenship. Immigration law serves as a gatekeeper for the nation's border, determining who may enter, how long they may stay, and when they must leave.

Congress has complete authority over immigration. Presidential power does not extend beyond refugee policy. Except for questions regarding aliens' constitutional rights, the courts have generally found the immigration issue as nonjusticiable.

States have limited legislative authority regarding immigration, and 28 U.S.C. § 1251 details the full extent of state jurisdiction. Generally, 28 U.S.C. § 994 details the federal sentencing guide ... Read more »
