Using Burns Law Library Proxy Server for Off-campus Access to Burns Law Library Databases

Who may use the library proxy server?

Law faculty and law students with up-to-date borrowing privileges at the Burns Law Library may access certain subscription databases from off-campus via the Library's proxy server.

What does the library proxy server do?

It is a server that acts as an intermediary between your computer and the access-restricted web sites for subscription databases. The proxy server requires you to identify yourself as an authorized library user before it passes you on to the database site as if you were located on-campus.

What do you need?

1. You need to have a library patron record that includes your GWorld Card barcode number. The Library proxy server identifies you as an authorized user by checking the name and GWorld Card barcode number that you enter against the Law Library's patron record database. If the name and/or the GWorld Card barcode number that you enter are not found in the database, the proxy server will return an error message that the information you entered is invalid.

The GWorld Card barcode number usually makes its way into your patron record through a transaction at the Law Library circulation desk, such as checking out an item. If you receive the invalid information message when attempting to use the proxy, visit the Law Library circulation desk in person to verify that your patron record includes your GWorld Card barcode number.

Your browser enabled for proxy service from the Law Library's computer system. Proxy users also must enable JavaScript and Java, and accept all cookies (these generally are default settings for browsers).

How often must this be done?

The Law Library recommends that the setup be done once, but then activated only for each research session that requires off-campus access to the specified subscription databases.

By keeping the proxy settings active, you will unnecessarily burden your browser and possibly slow down your surfing.
