Internships are not used to recruit to organisations but they can be helpful in getting excellent experience and give you the edge in a particular area of expertise, e.g human rights law, family law, commercial property law. Recruitment can be very competitive and deadlines can fall a few months before the internships start, so plan ahead and do your research.

Some organisations who offer legal internships are below:

3-6 month internship based in an office of a US death penalty attorney.
  • Anti-Slavery Volunteer placements involve practical office-based work experience. The schedule is flexible - some volunteers work for as little as four hours a week, others for up to four days. A time commitment of three months is normal. There are volunteer positions in the Communication, Programme and Information Teams. Internships are a minimum of 3 months and are mainly academic and project-led in content. Applicants can write a letter outlining their preferred area of work.
  • CONSILIUM Paid traineeships where the attendant is attached to a department and works as part of the team. They may be required to attend meetings of working parties (and possibly Coreper and Council meetings), draft minutes or carry out preparatory work or research on a particular subject.
  • CURIA 5 month long paid internships for newly qualified interpreters to be supervised as they perfect their interpreting skills, particularly in legal interpreting, which involves the preparation of case-files, terminological research and practical exercises in a ‘silent booth'.
  • Center for International Environmental Law Committed to strengthening and using international law and institutions to protect the environment, promote human health, and ensure a just and sustainable society.
  • Committee of the Regions Long term and short term traineeships available where you will acquire work experience in a European institution.
  • Common Law Section - Information on Student-Proposed Internships Common Law students have the opportunity to pursue self-proposed internships during their studies at the University of Ottawa. Students have the opportunity to learn in a more practical setting, explore different legal fields and work environments, and gain new skills and experiences. Internships can be completed during any semester.
  • EU Trademarks and Designs Registration Office Five month traineeships offered twice a year providing training in industrial property and more specifically in trade mark law.
  • Environmental Law Foundation Internships available in advice and referrals, sustainable communities and advertising, marketing and events.
  • European Data Protection Supervisor Five month traineeships are available twice a year allowing applicants to acquire practical experience of the day-to-day activities of the EDPS and specialising in data protection.
  • European Law Students' Association European Law Students' Association - has a membership of close to 30 000 students and recent graduates who are interested in law and have demonstrated commitment to international issues
  • European Parliament Acquire direct exposure to human rights work at local and international levels. It is designed to complement law, human rights, social work, social sciences, development and other international studies with practical experience in various aspects of democracy and human rights.
  • Human Rights Watch - Fellowships Help bring talented people from disadvantaged economic backgrounds into human rights. The Arthur Koenig fellowship is open to recent graduates (at the Master's level or above) in the fields of law, journalism, international relations, or other relevant studies.
  • ICC - International Criminal Court The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an independent, permanent court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Offer both legal and non-legal internships.
  • ICTY - TPIY This program provides internship opportunities in Costa Rica in law, international relations, political science, languages and translation for students and professionals. Selected candidates are not paid. Candidates must possess the motivation and skills to carry out their tasks in an effective, professional fashion in an international, multicultural environment. Candidates must be bilingual (English and Spanish), although Spanish is the everyday working language. Knowledge of French or Portuguese is an additional advantage. To be considered, candidates must be college sophomores committed to human rights and able to participate in the program for at least three months.
  • International Bar Association assist the IBA in developing academic papers and research on key legal topics of both local and international relevance with regards to human rights and business and economic law.
  • International Court of Arbitration Two months in length, internships are available in arbitration, ADR and expertise and promotion and marketing.
  • International Criminal Court 3-6 month internships for hardworking students at the start of their career.
  • International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda Internships available when the business need is there.
  • International Labour Organisation You will be exposed to high-profile conferences, participate in meetings, and contribute to analytical work as well as exciting programmes and groundbreaking strategies.
  • International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea Interns are involved in the law of the sea, public international law, international organisations and international relations, political science, public information, publications and library science and translation.
  • JUSTICE Law students can apply for this internship where they will undertake legal research in one of JUSTICE's main areas of policy work: human rights, criminal justice or EU justice and home affairs.
  • Law and Development Partnerships The Law & Development Partnership provides high level strategic advice and support to developing country governments and donors. They specialise in justice and security, private sector development: governance and institutional development; and regional economic integration.
  • OSCE Three month long internships giving interns a balance of legal and administrative assignments, enabling them to gain insight into the practical and legal aspects of international arbitration.
  • Reprieve Interns work for at least three months in death penalty law offices representing impoverished accused.
  • SEO London Works with high profile city law firms to broaden the opportunities available for under-represented groups and offers vacation schemes open to students from ethnic minorities.
  • The European Ombudsman Traineeships available twice a year, mainly to university Law graduates.
  • The UN Refugee Agency Six month unpaid internships in fundraising, legal protection, external relations, admin and finance. You'll gain an insight into the UN refugee agency and be contributing towards protecting refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Transparency International 2-6 month internship in the Legislative Branch where interns work on the development of harmonized legislative texts.
  • UN High Commission for Refugees Internship based on business need and intern's specialism. Examples include fields such as refugee protection (legal), international relations, administration and public affairs.
  • UN Internship Programme The UN Internship, based in New York is a two month programme which is offered three times a year. It can be extended to six months. High calibre graduate and post-graduate students will be placed in a department dependent on their specialism and in line with the needs of the UN.
  • UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Gives interns an understanding of current human rights issues at the international level and give them an insight into the work of the United Nations and OHCHR in particular.
  • United Nations Environment Programme
