The on-line Doctoral Programme (previously known as MERIT) was launched in 2004 by the School of the Built Environment, with a number of PhD students already graduated and perusing their career nationally and internationally. The programme is now available for candidates who wish to pursue their Doctoral studies under the Schools covered by the College of Science and Technology.

Who is it for?

The programme is suitable for candidates who are working in academia or industry, or simply cannot commit to a full-time or part-time research degree. This programme is suitable for overseas and home students that are based outside the Manchester area.

Programme structure

This programme is delivered online, and is backed up by tutor support. All candidates will be allocated a Salford Supervisor and Co-Supervisor, as well as a Local Advisor who must be based in an academic institution, local to the candidate’s country of residence.

Students are able to download research materials, interact with tutors and fellow students, submit work and check assessment results.

Research Proposal (max. 3 months) - Provides the basis for the research to be conducted in the remainder of the programme.

Literature Review (max. 8 months) - Builds up the student s knowledge in the subject-area of research. The students should search all relevant literature in their research field using the facilities provided by their local centres, the University of Salford s Library Services and web facilities.

Research Package 1 (max. 6 months) - Implement empirical research techniques.

Research Package 2 (max. 6 months) - Complete research objectives by following a plan of work. The student will work independently and should develop high skills in the subject area.

Testing (max. 3 months) - Validate the research results through a testing programme approved by the supervisor and local adviser.

Writing up (max. 6 months) - Complete the proposed final thesis and prepare for the final exam at the University of Salford. Students are required to work out a detailed plan for delivering the various individual chapters of the thesis to the supervisors/local adviser.

Candidates will engage in a highly interactive on-line environment backed up by PhD supervision.

Minimum computer requirements

Due to the nature of this programme, all candidates must have access to a computer with these specifications as well as a headset (with integrated microphone and earphones) so that you can listen and speak through the system.

Assessment and supervision

Students main supervisor is an appointee from the University of Salford who retains overall control and direction of the student s study programme.

By mutual agreement a local adviser for each student will be appointed from an external institution. The adviser(s) will normally have a PhD, and will be active in the proposed area of research.

Attendance at the University of Salford is compulsory only for interim assessment, internal evaluation and the final oral exam. There is no additional mandatory requirement to attend the University of Salford.
