Tennessee Statewide Offices

The Attorney General (AG) is the chief legal officer of the state. The goal of the AG and his staff is to provide the best legal service possible to the state and its citizens. Through his staff, the AG represents the officers and agencies of the state in civil litigation before state and federal courts and the Claims Commission. The AG prosecutes all criminal cases in the appellate courts and exercises original prosecutorial powers in limited areas. In addition to courtroom duties, the AG provides legal advice to state departments and agencies and the General Assembly.

The Comptroller of the Treasury audits state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government. The Comptroller also is a member of various committees, boards and authorities.

The Governor is responsible for the operation of state government. Through his Cabinet, he is responsible for the enforcement of the laws, the collection of taxes, and the general well-being of the state and its citizens.

The Lt. Governor of Tennessee is the Speaker of the Tennessee Senate and first in line in the succession to the office of Governor of Tennessee in the event of the death, resignation, or removal from office through impeachment and conviction of the Governor of the U.S. state of Tennessee.

The Tennessee Secretary of State has oversight of the Department of State. It is the secretary's duty to keep a register of the official acts and proceedings of the governor, and, when required, to "lay same, all papers, minutes and vouchers relative thereto, before the General Assembly.'' The Secretary serves on several state boards and agencies.

Tennessee is a U.S. state located in the Southeastern United States. Tennessee has played a critical role in the development of rock and roll and early blues music. Beale Street in Memphis is considered by many to be the birthplace of the blues. The 1927 Victor recording sessions in Bristol generally mark the beginning of the country music genre, and the rise of the Grand Ole Opry in the 1930s helped make Nashville the center of the country music recording industry.

The major functions of the Treasury Department include: receiving and disbursing public funds; managing all State investments, including the pension fund; administering three major employee benefit programs; operating the Unclaimed Property, College Savings (Section 529 Plans), and Small and Minority-Owned Business programs; and overseeing the risk management program and handling and adjudicating all claims made against the State.
