Virginia Law School (also called UVA Law) is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, which is rated as one of the best places to live in America with a relatively low cost of living for a city. In order to earn a Juris Doctor degree, a Virginia Law student must earn 86 credits and complete the writing requirement. For more detailed information, see Degree Program Requirements . The first-year curriculum includes Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Property, Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, and two semesters of legal writing. Virginia Law offers several combined-degree programs. including the J.D./M.A. J.D./M.B.A. and the J.D./M.P.H. The law school also offers L.L.M. and S.J.D. degrees . Virginia Law offers five opportunities for 2Ls and 3Ls to study abroad in Australia, Israel, Germany, England and Tokyo. Virginia Law has nine student-run journals. including the Virginia Law Review. Journal of Law Politics. and the Virginia Journal of Law Technology . Along with many student organizations. the law school has specialized programs and centers for specific legal interests, such as the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy, Center for National Security Law, and the Center for Children, Families, and the Law. A majority of Virginia Law students take the Virginia State Bar Exam and, in 2007, achieved a 91.1% pass rate. The overall pass rate for the Virginia Bar Exam was 74%. From the 2007 graduating class, 96.8% were employed at graduation and 99.6% were employed nine months after graduation. The median starting salary in the private sector was $145,000 and $55,000 in the public sector.
