#LLM GUIDE - Loyola Law School Los Angeles

The Law School

Loyola Law School, Los Angeles is located in downtown Los Angeles, California, a national and international center for business and law. Founded in 1920, Loyola is one of the largest law schools in the United States. This year, the Hollywood Reporter ranks Loyola #6 in the US for Entertainment Law. US News ranks Loyola #6 for Trial Advocacy, #10 for Tax, and #20 for diversity. The National Law Journal ranks Loyola #28 in the US for the number of 2014 JD graduates hired by the largest law firms in the US (and #46 by the percentage of the graduating JD class hired by the largest law firms). Loyola has the most alumni honored in Super Lawyers' Southern California Top 100 List and Top 50 Women List, and Loyola has educated more Los Angeles County Superior Court judges than any other law school.

Graduates of foreign law schools who enroll in the LLM program are not required to earn a specialization, but they may. Graduates of American law schools (JD graduates) who enroll in the LLM program must earn a specialization. JD graduates may not apply for the LLM program until 3 years after completing the JD degree.

The Faculty

Loyola Law School students benefit greatly from the faculty’s vast experience and their accessibility. There are 80 full-time professors, including 3 former US Supreme Court clerks, several former federal prosecutors and many alumni from the largest national and international law firms. Their areas of expertise cover more than 120 legal specialties ranging from accounting, administrative law and admiralty law to white collar crime, wine law and youth education law, to name just a few. Students have a multitude of opportunities to interact with their professors in class, during office hours and special events. Students are even invited to join the professors at their faculty workshops. The faculty's accessibility and expert classroom teaching are the main factors which earned them the #7 spot in Princeton Review's list of Best Professors.

Entry Requirements

Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) - LLM graduates and JD graduates may apply.

Master of Laws in Taxation (LLM in Taxation) - Admission is open to all JD and LLB graduates. For foreign applicants, a TOEFL score of 100 is required, with at least 25 in each of the four subsections.

Master of Legal Studies (MLS) - Applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States, or its equivalent from a foreign institution.

Master of Tax Law (MT) - Graduates must have earned an undergraduate degree. Only applicants with strong accounting, finance or economics backgrounds will be considered.

Master of Laws (LLM) - Graduates of foreign law schools, and graduates of American law schools (JD graduates) are eligible to apply. JD graduates may not apply for the LLM program until 3 years after completing the JD degree. Foreign applicants should have a TOEFL score of at least 80. The Admissions Committee prefers 90 and higher.

Location

Loyola Law School, Los Angeles is located in downtown Los Angeles, California, in the neighorhood known as "Koreatown." The campus occupies an entire city block. A series of contemporary buildings surround a central courtyard making the campus feel both intimate and open. Designed by award-winning architect Frank Gehry, the campus has been the subject of much architectural acclaim, locally and internationally.

Accommodation

There is no dormitory at Loyola Law School. All students live in private housing. There are many housing options nearby and in the surrounding Los Angeles neighborhoods. The LLM program staff will provide guidance to admitted LLM students searching for housing.
