scholarships for law school

#Scholarships for law school

We offer scholarships to many of our students to help offset the cost of their education and graduate with less debt .

Candidates for the major scholarship programs are encouraged to complete their admissions applications by January 15 to receive priority consideration. The College of Law considers all diversity factors in the administration of its scholarship programs. Scholarships are retained for six semesters of law school, as long as the student remains in good academic standing and remains enrolled in the College of Law.

If you have questions or would like more information, contact Janet Hatcher, financial aid coordinator/advisor, at 865-974-4131 or hatcher@utk.edu .

Scholarship programs

Tennessee Law Scholars and Research Associates

The Tennessee Law Scholars and Research Associates program is the premier scholarship program offered by the College of Law. Scholars receive a full-tuition waiver for in-state or out-of-state tuition, among other financial benefits. Candidates who have been admitted to this program typically have academic credentials in the 80th percentile of UT’s admitted candidate pool and have demonstrated experience, aptitude, and interest in research. Scholars develop valuable research skills and work closely with faculty an average of ten hours per week during their six semesters of law school.

Scholars retain the award for up to six semesters of legal study. Scholars must maintain a full-time course load, remain in good academic standing, and successfully complete research assignments.

Applicants interested in this program should complete their admissions applications by December 15 .

The value of tuition paid is considered as part of the financial aid package. Should the total amount of financial aid available exceed the total cost of attendance and/or demonstrated financial need, the candidate may be required to choose among various funding sources.

A stipend is paid in monthly installments from August to April each year. The total value of the stipend for the 2014 – 2015 academic year is approximately $6,250.

Student health insurance  is arranged with the university’s provider and paid for by the university.

Scholars are responsible for payment of fees to the university each year.

John W. Green Scholars

The Green Scholars program targets high-ability Tennessee residents. Green Scholars receive between half-tuition and full-tuition scholarships. Candidates accepted under this plan will typically have academic credentials in the 65th to 90th percentiles of UT’s admitted candidate pool.

Dean’s Scholars

Out-of-state candidates accepted to this program will pay in-state tuition (out-of-state tuition will be waived) to reduce the cost of their attendance. Accepted candidates will typically have academic credentials in the 65th to 90th percentiles of UT’s admitted candidate pool.

Tennessee Early-Decision Scholarship (TEDS) PROGRAM

Candidates may choose to apply as a an early-decision (TEDS) candidate by December 1 if Tennessee is their top choice and they are willing to make an earlier enrollment commitment. UT offers this binding, early-decision program for admission for the 2015 entering class. This program is designed for candidates for whom the University of Tennessee College of Law is a top choice and who seek to connect with a scholarship program early in the admission process. Early-decision candidates may be considered for the three major scholarship programs or for other scholarships offered by the College of Law.

Scholarships are retained for six semesters of law school as long as the student remains in good academic standard and remains enrolled in the College of Law.

This program is appropriate for candidates who have considered their law school options carefully, are prepared to move forward with the application and their commitment, and are confident that the University of Tennessee College of Law is their clear first choice. If a candidate is admitted to this scholarship program, he or she agrees to withdraw other law school applications. An applicant to the TEDS program may not apply for other law schools’ early-decision programs. Failure to honor these commitments will result in revocation of the offer of admission.

All application components, including letters of recommendation and the LSAC Law School Report, must be received by the Office of Admissions by December 1 to be considered for the TEDS program. A TEDS applicant would have taken the LSAT no later than September/October to be considered.

The College of Law will communicate decisions about TEDS applicants by December 15. The first deposit deadline for early-decision-admitted students is January 15 .

Applicants who apply but are not selected for the TEDS program will either be (1) referred for consideration in the regular admission process, (2) admitted to the College of Law and considered for other scholarship programs, or (3) informed that their application for admission has been denied.
