Lawyer says proposed UK immigration laws harsh

KINGSTON, Jamaica British Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to propose new laws to control immigration on Thursday.

Media reports are that his proposal is seeking to give police the power to seize wages earned by illegal immigrants.

OBSERVER ONLINE spoke with attorney-at-law Venice Williams-Gordon about how this proposed law might affect Caribbean nationals working illegally in the United Kingdom.

Williams-Gordon said that the stance that UK hopes to take is harsh and will affect illegal Caribbean immigrants living there. She described the approach as a means of stopping the influx of illegal immigrants and getting rid of those already in the system.

However, she mentioned that illegal immigrants who are not in the system will be hard for the UK Government to identify, speaking to a P-number record system which she likened to the United States Social Security system.

The attorney described the UK as a host of freebies and as a result, they are getting little to no revenue from those who are deemed illegal.

A number of citizens are not able to tap into resources provided for them, such as health care, but there are a number of illegal immigrants who are more than making use of the resources, she shared.

Specifically, we (Jamaicans) as a people, we work hard but we don t work smart, Williams-Gordon reasoned. We will be in these foreign countries working three/four years working hard, but we don t think of ways to legalise ourselves and get our papers together .
