Child support refers to the sum that the noncustodial parent must pay to the custodian. This sum serves as a parental contribution for the child's basic living expenses, such as food, clothing, shelter, health care, and education. When a court orders a parent to pay child support, the parent must pay directly to the child's custodian rather than directly to the child. States generally do not impose an obligation to pay support for a child after that child has reached the age of 18.

An individual, however, only has a legal responsibility to support one's own biological children. Thus, a court cannot order an individual to pay child support for a stepchild, subject to the caveat that the individual did not formally adopt the stepchild. While the vast majority of states adhere to this rule, a few state statutes differ with regard to stepchild support. To determine the law in a particular jurisdiction, see state laws .

Workers compensation laws first made an appearance in the United States in the early 1900s in response to concerns that employees injured at work were not being treated fairly — workers had little bargaining power and seldom prevailed in court against employers, which generally had the law on their side. Indeed, an estimated 70 to 94 percent of all industrial accidents went uncompensated before workers’ compensation laws reached the United States.

Legislators responded with the workers’ compensation framework — which was essentially a compromise between management and labor. Employers agreed to pay for any work-related injury or illness, without any finding that the employer was actually at fault for the injury or illness; in return, employees agreed to limits on the amount of compensation they would receive as part of a workers’ comp award (which, in some cases, meant giving up potentially large damage awards).

A new generation of online Master of Law (LL.M.) programs offered by highly ranked law schools are transforming the legal education landscape. Though distance learning programs were once viewed with skepticism by professionals and educators, recent developments in communications technology have made it possible for top-tier institutions of higher learning to offer online programs. These institutions have begun to offer the same faculty, curricula and degrees associated with their prestigious schools in a more flexible and accessible online format.

Online education has existed since the early days of the Internet, but initially met with justifiable skepticism. How can a truly dynamic educational experience occur when professors and students never meet face to face? How does one evaluate the quality of an online degree? For-profit universities, questionably accredited institutions and websites that sell meaningless degrees cast a shadow over distance learning programs. But tod ... Read more »

#Florida Child Custody Law - 225 Pages of Custody Info

The issue of child custody is an emotionally-challenging one for couples who have decided to part ways. To help understand how courts view custody decisions, and how to prepare for your case, it is best to understand essential legal factors governing custody. It will also be useful to learn how to handle younger kids who will  have to adjust to a new parenting pattern.

Florida has all but eliminated the term custody. The right term to use is ‘time sharing’ Right off the bat, the term ‘custody’ is a misnomer as far as Florida statutes go. Time Sharing is the concept where each parent gets to spent a certain designated amount of time with his or her child. It is initially left to parents to decide on a certain time sharing schedule. A labor law attorney is a lawyer who represents employers or employees in legal disputes, generally over the terms and conditions of employment. A labor law attorney can be in private practice or work for a law firm. but some labor law attorneys work directly for employers or for labor unions. While labor law attorneys are useful in situations where employers and their employees are arguing a case before a judge, most labor law attorneys aren't involved in litigation. Instead, they specialize in consultation and negotiations intended to avoid litigation. When an employer opens a new facility, for example, consultation with a labor law attorney will be a routine part of the planning process, to familiarize the employer with things like local labor law and union activity in the region.

Labor law in the United States seems fairly straightforward, but it can be quite complex in certain circumstances, and often find themselves involved in disputes over those elements of their rel ... Read more »
