The Buzz

About Cooley LLP

The firm that is now known as Cooley LLP was founded in 1920 in San Francisco by Arthur Cooley and Louis Crowley. The practice they started went on to become a major player in California, as it prospered in the Silicon Valley boom years (and survived the bust). Since then, the firm has expanded its reach to Southern California, the Rockies, the East Coast, the Pacific Northwest, the Far East and the UK, while maintaining a relatively comfortable size.

In 1980, Cooley opened an office in Palo Alto, the epicenter of American technology. The firm began working with venture capitalists, life sciences companies and emerging technology start-ups, representing the likes of Adobe Systems and Gilead Sciences; it also took Genentech and Amgen public in 1980 and 1983, respectively. But Cooley's IT roots pre-dated personal computers-it advised Raychem on its founding in 1957 and helped form National Semiconductor in 1959. It als ... Read more »

You've purchased a new car, but something isn't right. Whether it's the steering, the brakes, a botched paint job, or a horrible smell, you think you've bought a lemon. But just because you personally believe the car to be a lemon doesn't mean the law necessarily agrees with you. Each state has enacted its own set of "lemon laws" to deal with the problem of irretrievably malfunctioning new cars. Some states also protect the purchase of used cars - see below. The following is a general framework for determining whether your car qualifies as a "lemon," and therefore whether you are afforded protection under consumer protection laws.

While you can handle the problem yourself using the guidelines below, if you find the process too difficult or the manufacturer is acting inappropriately, you can contact an attorney with experience dealing with lemons and manufacturers, who will fight for your rights.

Under the law of most states, for a vehicle to be considered a lemon, th ... Read more »

The concerns of elders and the concerns of their caregivers typically coincide—quality of life, quality of care, wellbeing of the primary caregiver (ordinarily a spouse or family member), and wellbeing of loved ones, including pets.

Elders often find it unavoidable to address these problems: (a) to maximize financing for expensive long-term care versus leaving an inheritance for loved ones; and (b) to wisely select fiduciaries to act on their behalf in case of physical or mental incapacity. Such problems present significant emotional, financial, and legal challenges.

Massachusetts elder law draws on both federal and State law for its legal content. The Massachusetts Medicaid program has been renamed MassHealth. Other distinctive features include

  • the absence of legislation recognizing living wills substituting reliance upon health care proxies instead
  • a well-developed mental health law
  • a well-developed case law of trusts based on a t ... Read more »

#Copper Pipes Experiment

Experiments with magnets and conductors

Copper Pipes

Description:

This is an excellent demonstration of Lenz's law and eddy currents. When a magnet is dropped through a vertical copper pipe, it falls much slower than a steel ball would. Its rate of fall quickly reaches a terminal velocity and it takes much longer for it to fall out of the other end than a steel ball would take.

Construction:

There is nothing that has to be built or put together for this demonstration. All that is needed is a strong magnet (for example, a NIB measuring 1/2 diameter, about 1/8 thick) and three or four copper pipes of different sizes. The following table details the copper pipes I used:

(the air gap is the space between the magnet and the inside wall of the pipe)

(all of the pipes except for the special thick wall pipe can be obtained from most hardware stores)

These days, it’s really not easy to get into a law school.

A recent survey reveals that the quality of law school applicants has increased a lot in the past few years, making the competition more fierce than ever before. Earning a law degree through attending an online law school is especially difficult, but it’s still possible.

All states in America, except California, require students to get a law school degree accredited by the American Bar Association before they take the Bar exam. However, there is no online law school accredited by ABA. Therefore, only those living in California or willing to relocate have a chance of taking the Bar exam, which is essential for a practicing lawyer, with an online law degree.

How to Choose an Online Law School

Choosing the right online law school really makes sense for people whose career goal is to practice law as an attorney. It is risky to attend an unaccredited online school. Also, it might be a suffer ... Read more »

A relatively young law school, Vermont Law School has been fully accredited by the ABA since 1978. Located in the tiny town of South Royalton, Vermont educates a total of 567 students, all full-time.

With 25 th -75 th percentile LSATs of 152-158, and GPAs of 3.05-3.57, Vermont's admissions statistics are very typical of the third tier. One aspect of admissions that does distinguish Vermont is the school's acceptance rate - at 66.7% (590 of 884), the highest of any law school in the nation. Of those accepted, 233 decided to enroll, giving Vermont a more respectable matriculation rate of 39 percent.

Do not be fooled by the name - Vermont is a private school, not public. Thus the tuition is both the same for in- and out-of-state students, and also very steep: $40,420 annually. And unfortunately, Vermont is not particularly generous with financial aid. The 25 th - 75 th percentiles of grant aid ranged only from $5,000 to $13,000 a year. And although merit- and need-based ... Read more »

The practice of law takes several forms. The ways in which lawyers apply their expertise can be broadly categorized into the following practice types:

  • Private Practice: involves working alone or with partners in a firm to provide legal services to clients (individuals or corporations); some lawyers specialize in one or more practice areas while others engage in general practice.
  • Public Interest Law: serves low-income individuals, marginalized groups and social causes; practitioners may work for advocacy groups, legal aid clinics and other organizations with the goal of advancing an interest of the public.
  • Government Counsel: governments hire lawyers for legal advice and representation; lawyers directly employed by the government may work for ministries, government agencies and crown corporations.

A number of federal, state, and local laws forbid discrimination against individuals or classes of persons based on factors such as race, color, national origin, sex, religion, and disability. Among the best known federal laws that prohibit discrimination in the workplace are the Title VII of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991. which addresses illegal discrimination by employers, and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. which protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in several areas, including education and employment.

The term affirmative action is not readily defined; in fact, controversy has long surrounded both the definition and the means necessary to achieve the desired goals of affirmative action. Commentators have cautioned that affirmative action and strict minority quota systems not be confused with one another. Dome of the Cornell Law Library

Applicants seeking an intimate and serene setting in which to attend law school may want to consider Cornell. The school offers solid employment prospects, particularly in New York City biglaw, at an extremely high price tag. About 85% of the class of 2012 had found long-term, full-time jobs requiring bar passage as of nine months after graduation, but according to Law School Transparency, the estimated total debt-financed cost of a Cornell J.D. is over a quarter of a million dollars.

Cornell law students have access to the rest of the university. For example, students interested in labor law can take interdisciplinary courses in labor relations in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell, while those interested in African legal systems can take courses in African history at the Africana Studies and Research Center.

#Cornell law school

Cornell Law School combines inspired teaching with cutting-edge scholarship in a close-knit and collegial intellectual community. Our faculty have long upheld the principle that law must be studied within the context of its ultimate humanity. As part of a great American research university, they recognize that this principle demands the same dedication, enthusiasm, and critical spirit that infuses all liberal study.

Our students thrive in a diverse and resource-rich atmosphere that is intellectually invigorating, professionally supportive, and forward-thinking. This is precisely why we are known for producing well-rounded lawyers and accomplished practitioners cut from a different cloth – “lawyers in the best sense.”

Note: Our law school adheres to the educational objectives set out in Chapter 3 of the accreditation standards of the American Bar Association. These standards may be viewed in detail here .

As mentioned above, tuition can get pricy at BLS. The school's website lists full-time and part-time tuition and fees at $43,990 and $33,074 per year, respectively. Add onto that the price of books, housing, etc. and you get a grand total of $66,335 per year for full-time students and $55,319 per year for part-time students.

To help combat this debt, the school offers many different scholarships and need-based grants. In their last ABA, BLS reported that 66% (or 987/1,496) students received some kind of grant-based aid. More full-time students (77.4%) received aid than part-time students (22.3%). Of those who were lucky enough to receive aid, 63.7% received less than half tuition, 27.8% received half to full tuition, 1.9% received full tuition, and 6.6% received full tuition plus an additional stipend. The median grant amount was $14,880 for full-time students and $9,375 for part-time students.

Military justice is the body of laws and procedures governing members of the armed forces. Many states have separate and distinct bodies of law that govern the conduct of members of their armed forces. Some states use special judicial and other arrangements to enforce those laws, while others use civilian judicial systems. Legal issues unique to military justice include the preservation of good order and discipline, the legality of orders, and appropriate conduct for members of the military. Some states enable their military justice systems to deal with civil offences committed by their armed forces in some circumstances.

Details

Living allowance includes rent, food, and personal expenses for a moderate lifestyle. An additional allowance may be made for eligible dependent children.

Stanford University Cardinal Care medical insurance allowance is included for all students, even if an alternative insurance is used by the student. The single student health insurance rate is quoted for married students on the assumption that the spouse will have separate coverage.

The  U.S. Department of Education  has established a set of calculations that governs the awarding of federal loans. The federal need analysis system compensates for the cost of additional family members by reducing the amount of income a married student is expected to contribute toward the cost of attendance: the amount is lower than that of a single student with the same income. As such, i f a student is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and married, the cost of attendance that appears on the award ... Read more »

International human rights law began as a response to the horrors of war, in particular World War II, although the Geneva Conventions had begun earlier. The formation of the United Nations gave human rights international legitimacy, particularly because many nations signed the United Nations Charter. which specifically mentions human rights (Preamble. Chapter I ). Since the formation of the United Nations, it has passed many agreements and resolutions binding the signatories to respect human rights. Additionally, it has set up tribunals to charge those suspected of egregious violations of human rights. Furthermore, several other organizations, created by various treaties, have come into existence. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, for example, ensures that signatories of the American Convention on Human Rights abide by that treaty. The European Convention on Human Rights binds members of the Council of Europe to the human rights obligations set forth in it. The Conventi ... Read more »

Table notes Although the headline ranking figures show changes in the data year to year, the pattern of clustering among the schools is equally significant. Some 190 points separate the top programme, Harvard Business School, from the school ranked 100th. The top 12 participants, down to IE Business School, form the top group of MBA providers. The second group, headed by Cambridge: Judge, spans schools ranked 13th to 40th. Differences between schools in this group are small. The 37 schools in the third group headed by Georgetown University: McDonough are similarly close together. The remaining 22 schools, headed by Durham University Business School, make up the fourth group.

#Crime Scene Investigator

So is being a crime scene investigator (CSI) as exciting and intriguing as television makes it out to be? Well that depends. There are a number of different categories and types of crime scene investigators and each plays a different investigative role. In equations formulated by Sir Isaac Newton, the force of gravity grows with the mass of two objects and gets weaker the more distant the objects are from each other.

In general, a scientific law is the description of an observed phenomenon. It doesn t explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it. The explanation of the phenomenon is called a scientific theory. It is a misconception that theories turn into laws with enough research.

In science, laws are a starting place, said Peter Coppinger, an associate professor of biology and biomedical engineering at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. From there, scientists can then ask the questions, Why and how?

Both scientific laws and theories are supported by a large body of empirical data and are widely accepted by the vast majority of scientists within a discipline. Both also help unify a particular field of scientific study. However, theories and laws, as well as hypotheses, are separate parts of t ... Read more »

Before we can discuss successful strategies for students participating in online education, we need to understand what online learning is, and how to use this new medium. Online learning has various definitions, but an essential component for all is the use of computing and telecommunication technologies to deliver and receive course materials.

Online education utilizes the Internet or videoconferencing to create learning communities. Course materials are provided on a Web site and are occasionally found on CD-ROM; email, bulletin boards, forums, and chat rooms are used to interact with other students and teachers.

Online learning can enhance traditional forms of education. It may take place in the classroom or workplace, it may be performed at home, at online access centers, or at a public library. Online learning provides hands-on experience using information technologies and makes it easier for students to access learning and customized lessons.

The Divorce Act of 1968 governs divorce in Canada. Unlike the United States where divorce laws differ from state to state, federal laws govern divorces in Canada. All provinces follow the same laws and regulations. The act was revised in 1986 to establish grounds for divorce and guidelines for child support and spousal support.

Chapter 8

(1) A court of competent jurisdiction may, on application by either or both spouses, grant a divorce to the spouse or spouses on the ground that there has been a breakdown of their marriage.

Breakdown of marriage:

(2) Breakdown of a marriage is established only if:

(a) The spouses have lived separate and apart for at least one year immediately preceding the determination of the divorce proceeding and were living separate and apart at the commencement of the proceeding; or< ... Read more »
