What is Equine Law?

Equine law is, basically, the practice of law related to all aspects of horses, horse-related activities and industries, horse businesses, horse organizations, and horse facilities. Examples of legal services related to equine law include preparing or reviewing equine-related contracts (like sales and transfer agreements), disputes and litigation related to horse transactions and injuries, tax and immigration issues for horse industry workers, animal rights matters, gaming laws, and many others.

Welcome to the American Equestrian Alliance website, a national association of horseowners, stables, farms and ranches, and Equestrian businesses.

This site is approaching its seventh year since creation and we are pleased with our growth. There are over 1000 full text cases (US, Historical and UK) and over 1100 U.S. statutes fully available on the site, with Michigan and California being very comprehensive. More importantly, we have over 50 topics that give the viewer directions and comprehensive explanations on some of the more interesting issues of the animal area. We also have a number of legal articles addressing a wide variety of animal topics. This is the best way for non-lawyers to access the information. The international collection continues to expand.

This site contains comprehensive resource materials on equine law and horsemanship safety. It is hosted by the University of Vermont. Both the legal and horsemanship materials are suitable for use by law students, lawyers, and the general public. The materials are updated each week with new law cases for horsemen within days after they have been decided by the courts and with other materials as they become available.

Horses have played an indispensable role in human history, yet these intelligent, sensitive animals have suffered untold abuse and neglect in work, war, and so-called entertainment. It was the sight of a carthorse being brutally beaten by his driver that spurred Henry Bergh to found the ASPCA, and we?ve since made horse protection an important focus of our work. The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) is the national governing body for horse sports in the UK, affiliated to the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sports. It exists to provide leadership, vision and purpose in steering the direction of equestrianism. Its patron is HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.

The primary mission of the FEI is to advance the orderly growth of equestrian sport worldwide by promoting, regulating and administering humane and sportsmanlike international competition in the traditional equestrian disciplines.

The National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) has an important, proactive role in raising equine welfare standards nationwide. Its membership base of over 60 welfare organisations, includes equine welfare charities large and small throughout the United Kingdom as well as a multitude of organisations from the equestrian and veterinary sectors of the horse industry.

American Association for Horsemanship Safety is a nonprofit, educational association founded in July 1995. It answers a need for riding instructor certification that relates personal skills to safety and helps insulate instructors, camps, stables and guest ranches from liability suits. The AAHS offers an efficient tested method for training instructors and teaching riding. It is the only method designed to teach one person how to teach another person to ride ? English or Western. AAHS offers a defensible, systematic approach to teaching horsemanship safety.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) was founded in 1954 by a group of 11 charter members who saw that together they could direct the focus of equine veterinary medicine. Today, the AAEP, headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, represents an educated group of men and women who cover a broad range of equine disciplines, breeds and associations. Over 8,000 veterinarians and veterinary students in 57 countries are members of the AAEP.

For many years, the EMSA has provided education, research and resources to protect riders and improve safety within equestrian sports. The SRF was formed to provide a network of assistance to injured riders. In 2003, the two groups merged to form an organization that primarily works to prevent equestrian accidents, but are able to assist riders when an injury has occurred.

Equestrian competitors, leisure riders, coaches, fans and enthusiasts each share a personal bond with the horse. This commonality defines the membership of the United States Equestrian Federation [USEF] which serves as the National Governing Body for Equestrian Sport.
