Accredited Colleges and Universities Offering Online Degrees

Online Degree Programs and Online Education

The primary difference between online and traditional college degree programs is the use of the Internet to deliver course materials, and manage communication and learning collaboration. Hundreds of traditional colleges and universities have developed online courses to meet the needs of their students. These courses use a variable combination of textbooks, video demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, web base resources, and a management system, which provides access to course materials, discussions, and assignments via the Internet. Assignments are pretty much the same as in traditional college degree programs. They may include commenting on discussion forums, working on individual or group projects, writing papers, selective readings, and taking quizzes, and major examinations.

Online education students are a diverse group. Some are high school students trying to earn early college credits or recent high school graduates seeking their first degree. Others are soldiers, working adults taking classes to advance or change their careers,

and some are parents who want to earn a degree while working and/or raising a family. All appreciate the opportunity to continue their educations without interfering with their career and family responsibilities.

Online Colleges

Online colleges bring content, instructors, and students together to best facilitate learning. The content of an online degree program is virtually identical to that of traditional programs, but the delivery is very different. Online colleges offer the convenience of attending classes anywhere and at any time. All you need is Internet access. That means you may move toward a degree quickly and on your schedule.

Online classes may be offered by traditional, residential colleges or institutions with a one or two building physical plant without classroom space or student housing. In most instances, online classes look the same as those in classroom and lecture hall settings. In online programs, professors and/or tutors offer students support via emails and online chatting.

Most professors provide a syllabus which outline course goals, assignments, due dates, and scheduled examinations.

Finding Your Online College

Many well known and well established colleges and universities now offer online degree programs. So do institutions you may know little or nothing about. That’s why we advise you to request information from at least 3-4 colleges and to research and compare them carefully. First, be sure that you consider only colleges that are accredited by an agency approved by the United States Department of Education. If you attend a college which is not fully accredited, you risk getting an inferior education and winding up with a degree that is virtually worthless. That is why we list and link to only fully accredited institutions .

To help you find the best online degree options for you, we have provided a search box (top right) and an alphabetical list. Try both.
