#Legal advice for the public

As part of our training programme for the lawyers of the future, The University of Law pro bono programme provides free legal advice to members of the public.

All our advisers are postgraduate students who are training to become solicitors or barristers. They are supervised by experienced lawyers.

The Birmingham centre offers three different services providing FREE information/advice/assistance to members of the public.

1. Legal Advice Centre

Do you have a non-urgent legal problem on which you would like written advice?

If so, our students may be able to help.

From September to May our students offer FREE initial legal advice. All advice is given in writing usually following interview, under the strict supervision of qualified staff. Interviews are by prior appointment only.

Are you having difficulty in seeing your children or grandchildren due to a family relationship breakdown?

Do you need advice following a marital or relationship breakdown?

Have you been involved in an accident that is not your fault, or had medical treatment or care you are not happy with?

2. Birmingham Employment Rights Advice Line – BERAL

Are you an employee?

Do you have an employment law query?

If so, BERAL may be able to help you.

BERAL offers FREE preliminary advice on employment law issues to employees. All advice is given by telephone during weekly clinics on Wednesday evenings between 6pm and 8pm throughout the year. Advice is given by fully qualified specialist employment law solicitors, who work on a voluntary basis.

3. Birmingham Employment Advice Clinic

Do you have an employment problem on which you would like initial face-to-face advice and assistance?

If so, the Birmingham Employment Advice Clinic may be able to help you.

The clinic is an outreach service of the University’s Legal Advice Centre. You can have a FREE individual interview with a specialist employment lawyer who will advise you, with follow-up in writing. The fortnightly clinic is held on Thursday evenings between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
