#Consumers International - UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection
United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection
Our hard fought advocacy has delivered consumer protection guidelines at the international level.
The United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection (UNGCP) act as an international reference point of the consumer movement, but with new developments in technology and business practices, there is a strong argument for revising them to ensure they are still relevant to the challenges facing consumers.
The guidelines were adopted by the UN in 1985 after 10 years of campaigning by CI. They gave important legitimacy to the principles of consumer rights and practical support and guidance for developing national consumer protection legislation.
In 1999, they were updated with a new section on sustainable consumption and production (section G) to reflect environmental concerns emerging during the 1990s.
The guidelines have been interp

#Consumer Protection Laws You Need To Know
You buy a new bike for your daughter as a birthday gift. When she tries it in the park three weeks later, you both notice the front tire is bent. What do you do? Should you fix it yourself and avoid the trouble of going back to the store? Has the return time lapsed? Is the bike it still covered under warranty? What do you if you didn't purchase extra insurance coverage ?
The blue sweater, you bought has given you a rash. When you look at the label, you notice that it's not 100% cotton as advertised. Instead, it is made from a mix of unpronounceable materials. Can you dispute the seller's claims?
These are some of the scenarios that customers go through daily. Consumer protection laws are meant to protect us against these types of issues. That is why it's important to familiarize ourselves with the more common consumer protection laws.

Think very, very carefully before going to law school and perhaps ruining your life, permanently. The law schools have been flooding the market with a large oversupply of attorneys for decades. This has been a problem for a long time, not just in the current recession. The legal job market is horrible right now and it was only a little less awful earlier in the decade and in the 1990's. Consequently, the happy-talk about how the legal job market will improve significantly after the recession ends is bogus and intended to fool you. A huge amount of JDs, perhaps as much as 50%, never find work as attorneys, and many who do find work don't earn enough to make having gone to law school worthwhile. If you are looking for something to do with a liberal arts degree, find something else. Also, because of the huge oversupply of attorneys, working as a lawyer can be very miserable. Attorneys work very long hours under intense pressure in Machiavellian environments and many do not ea

My son has been married for four years. From the planning of the wedding until now, it has been difficult. I was blamed for things that happened before the wedding which were not true and I just find my daughter-in-law to be very cold. According to my son she had a list of 11 things I did wrong before the wedding. The wedding was difficult as I was completely ignored. She never calls me or emails me. My son said she is not that type of person. He said she doesn't email her best friend. They come to my house occasionally for holidays. I was never invited to their home as he said the house was too small. They now have a son. I gave her a beautiful shower and nice gifts. Everyone got a thank you note but me. I cry a lot over this. I tried talking to my son and he says she is not outgoing. Her parents live out of town and come occasionally and spend the night. I feel hurt and left out. I cannot talk to my son anymore. He says I am too emotional. I think too much about things. What do I

#Copyright laws
There's a lot of misinformation out there about legal rights and responsibilities in the digital era.
This is especially disconcerting when it comes to information being shared with youth. Kids and teens are bombarded with messages from a myriad of sources that using new technology is high-risk behavior. Downloading music is compared to stealing a bicycle even though many downloads are lawful. Making videos using short clips from other sources is treated as probably illegal even though many such videos are also lawful.
This misinformation is harmful, because it discourages kids and teens from following their natural inclination to be innovative and inquisitive. The innovators, artists and voters of tomorrow need to know that copyright law restricts many activities but also permits many others. And they need to know the positive steps they can take to protect themselves in the digital sphere. In short, youth don't need more intimidation wha

#What Is Tort Law? Definition and Examples - Video - Lesson Transcript
Instructor: Kat Kadian-Baumeyer
Kat has a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Management and teaches Business courses.
A tort is simply a civil wrong. There are three general types of torts that may cause injury to another person. In civil law, torts are grounds for lawsuits to compensate a grieving party for any damages or injuries suffered.
Tort Law: Three Types of Torts
Torts are wrongdoings that are done by one party against another. As a result of the wrongdoing, the injured person may take civil action against the other party. To simplify this, let's say while walking down the aisle of a grocery store, you slip on a banana that had fallen from a shelf. You become the plaintiff. or injured party, and the grocery store is considered the tortfeasor or defendant. the negligent party.
Simply said, you would probably take civi

A farmer is allowed to kill your dog if it’s worrying their livestock.

#Contracts of employment - the rules
This guide is based on UK law. It was last updated in June 2011.
What is the contract of employment?
The contract of employment is the agreement between employer and employee which governs the relationship between both parties.
It need not be in writing and can be implied from the surrounding circumstances. A written contract can comprise one short handwritten page or a lengthy document following detailed negotiations. Most contracts fall somewhere in between.
Failing to provide a written contact of employment results in a lack of clarity since neither party knows the precise extent of their respective rights, duties and obligations.
By taking the time to carefully prepare a contract of employment for each employee, disputes and ambiguity about the employment relationship can be minimised. As each business has different needs and outlooks, the style and content of the contract of employ

But it is an area of the law where, beyond that simple fact, the waters are very murky.
In a nutshell, the Supreme Court of Canada said that the section of the Criminal Code which made abortion a crime was of no force or effect so it is as if that section did not exist. The Supreme Court can overrule Parliament when the latter's laws are incompatible with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That was the case here.
Behaviour in Canada can only be criminal if a federal law specifically prohibits it.
There is a long history of abortion in common law. known as "destroying infants in the mother's womb" and punishable by "transported beyond this season for the term of his or her natural life or for any term not less than 15 years" (William Russell, A Treastise On Crimes and Misdemeanors (Philadelphia: T JW Johnson Co.,1857), p. 671).
Historically, some phases of the common law punished the perpetrator of an abortion only if it occurred subsequent t

These days, it’s really not easy to get into a law school.
A recent survey reveals that the quality of law school applicants has increased a lot in the past few years, making the competition more fierce than ever before. Earning a law degree through attending an online law school is especially difficult, but it’s still possible.
All states in America, except California, require students to get a law school degree accredited by the American Bar Association before they take the Bar exam. However, there is no online law school accredited by ABA. Therefore, only those living in California or willing to relocate have a chance of taking the Bar exam, which is essential for a practicing lawyer, with an online law degree.
How to Choose an Online Law School
Choosing the right online law school really makes sense for people whose career goal is to practice law as an attorney. It is risky to attend an unaccredited online school. Also, it might be a suffer

#Cooley Law School To - Cease Operations - At One Of Its Campuses
This summer, we began reporting on the uphill battle the Thomas M. Cooley Law School faced with regard to its declining revenue and student enrollment. In early July, we were the first to break the news that Cooley Law would stop accepting first-year students at its Ann Arbor campus as part of a financial management plan. At the time, James Robb, the law school’s associate dean of external affairs and senior counsel, said there were no plans to close the campus.
Plans apparently changed quickly, because at the end of July, we learned that Cooley Law was considering consolidating the Ann Arbor campus with other Cooley campuses by the end of the fall 2014 semester. Once again, Robb assured the media that no definitive plans had been made yet.
Now that we re almost halfway through the fall 2014 semester, it seems that Cooley Law has begrudgingly decided to lie in the bed that it has made. This may be th

You've purchased a new car, but something isn't right. Whether it's the steering, the brakes, a botched paint job, or a horrible smell, you think you've bought a lemon. But just because you personally believe the car to be a lemon doesn't mean the law necessarily agrees with you. Each state has enacted its own set of "lemon laws" to deal with the problem of irretrievably malfunctioning new cars. Some states also protect the purchase of used cars - see below. The following is a general framework for determining whether your car qualifies as a "lemon," and therefore whether you are afforded protection under consumer protection laws.
While you can handle the problem yourself using the guidelines below, if you find the process too difficult or the manufacturer is acting inappropriately, you can contact an attorney with experience dealing with lemons and manufacturers, who will fight for your rights.

Copper Pipes
Description:
This is an excellent demonstration of Lenz's law and eddy currents. When a magnet is dropped through a vertical copper pipe, it falls much slower than a steel ball would. Its rate of fall quickly reaches a terminal velocity and it takes much longer for it to fall out of the other end than a steel ball would take.
Construction:
There is nothing that has to be built or put together for this demonstration. All that is needed is a strong magnet (for example, a NIB measuring 1/2 diameter, about 1/8 thick) and three or four copper pipes of different sizes. The following table details the copper pipes I used:
(the air gap is the space between the magnet and the inside wall of the pipe)

#Copyright laws for music could increase cost of online music streaming
Freelance contributor, TechHive
Late last week, the United States Copyright Office released a report recommending sweeping reforms to the existing music licensing system, which is a labyrinthine mess of outdated regulations (because most of them were established before the Internet age).
Titled “Copyright and the Music Marketplace,” the 245-page tome follows an exhaustive study of music licensing that took the best part of a year, during which the Office sent out two notices seeking public input, received hundreds of pages worth of comments in reply, and held three public roundtables. No sooner had it published the report than reactions started pouring in.
Among them was a short but blunt statement from the Digital Media Association (DiMA) lambasting the Office for squandering “a significant opportunity to truly advance copyright, music licensing, and the music marketplace with

From the beginning, Cornell Law School has embraced an international perspective, a diverse student body, and international scholarship. Cornell Law School's first entering class in 1887 included a Japanese student, a professor of international law, and required lectures in Roman and international law.
An early faculty member, Charles Evans Hughes, became a judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice, and later Governor of New York, U.S. Secretary of State, Associate Justice, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ratings Rankings
What do these ratings mean?
from Brian Dalton, Breaking Media Director of Research
The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”

IS THERE ANY LAW GOVERNING THE INTERNET?
I am sure almost everyone will agree there must be laws at the WorldWideWeb because lawlessness will inevitably lead to chaos. Every country in the world has their own laws and so, why should the Internet be any different?
However, the interesting part about having an Internet Law is that the Internet is shared by everyone in the world and so, the laws must be agreed upon by all countries. The drafting of an Internet Law will be a legislator s (and draftsman s) nightmare. The Internet Law has to be accepted by all the countries in the world and therefore consonant to all existing laws worldwide. The existing laws of each country already differ from each other. English Law is not really the same as American Law and neither is French Law wholly compatible with German Law. Laws in Japan are different from those in Russia and China. So how do you formulate a set of Internet Laws that all countries can agree to?

Stanford University Cardinal Care medical insurance allowance is included for all students, even if an alternative insurance is used by the student. The single student health insurance rate is quoted for married students on the assumption that the spouse will have separate coverage.
The U.S. Department of Education has established a set of calculations that governs the awarding of federal loans. The federal need analysis system compensates for the cost of additional family members by reducing the amount of income a married student is expected to contribute toward the cost of attendance: the amount is lower than that of a single student with the same income. As such, i f a student is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and married, the cost of attendance that appears on the award

(CNN) Indiana Gov. Mike Pence stirred up controversy this week when he signed a "religious freedom" bill into law.
The law has businesses and civil rights groups up in arms and threatening -- or in some cases pledging -- to boycott the state.
The reaction has gotten so hot, that on Saturday, Pence told The Indianapolis Star that he is working with legislators to amend the law and "clarify" that it does not promote discrimination.
He told the Star that a new bill would likely be introduced in coming days but did not specify what it would say or who would introduce it.
What's so controversial about religious freedom?
It's not so much that religious freedom has suddenly become controversial, but rather critics of the bill assert the law could be used by individuals and businesses to discriminate on the basis of religion -- particularly against the LGBT community of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.

#Copyright laws
A copyright is a form of intellectual property protection that granted by the federal government. A copyright, however, is not granted in the same manner in which a patent is granted. A patent will be issued only after a patent application has been filed with and approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. To the contrary, a copyright is provided to the authors of original works of authorship, regardless of whether the work has been published and regardless of whether the work has been registered. Unlike patents, copyrights come into being at the moment an original work is fixed in a tangible medium of expression. While there are significant advantages to federal registration of a copyright, no registration is required in order for a copyright to exist. Likewise, no registration is required for an author to begin using the familiar copyright symbol ©, but given the cost and benefit you should absolute

Getting a law degree is no easy task; all the terrible things you ve heard are probably true, at least to some extent. The rewards of getting a degree in law may be great, but first you have to make it through a lot of years of seriously hard work. If you re up to the challenge, great! If you think you might not be up to the challenge now, don t waste your time; if you don t attack with a 115% CAN-DO attitude, you might not even make it through the first semester. Too many people try to get a law degree for reasons of prestige or reasons of fitting in with their families, not realizing what it is exactly that they re actually getting themselves into.
Although to be admitted to a law program in the United States you must have already completed a bachelor s degree, many people make the mistake of thinking that since they made it through four years of college, they can make it through three years of law school with the same ease. Those people are dead wrong. Getting a law degre

Before we can discuss successful strategies for students participating in online education, we need to understand what online learning is, and how to use this new medium. Online learning has various definitions, but an essential component for all is the use of computing and telecommunication technologies to deliver and receive course materials.
Online education utilizes the Internet or videoconferencing to create learning communities. Course materials are provided on a Web site and are occasionally found on CD-ROM; email, bulletin boards, forums, and chat rooms are used to interact with other students and teachers.
Online learning can enhance traditional forms of education. It may take place in the classroom or workplace, it may be performed at home, at online access centers, or at a public library. Online learning provides hands-on experience using information technologies and makes it easier for students to access learning and customized lessons.

After all that hard work, you get the reward: driving off the lot in a shiny new car! But what happens when that shiny new car isn’t everything you were promised?
Oklahoma Lemon Law Info:
Sadly, manufacturers far too often sell cars which don’t live up to “new car” standards. Cars which repeatedly fail or require numerous repairs due to recurring problems are popularly known as “lemons.” Fortunately, Oklahoma has enacted the Oklahoma Lemon Law which forces manufacturers who manufacture ”lemons” to fix the problem for Oklahoma purchasers. What is Family Law?
Family law consists of a body of statutes and case precedents that govern the legal responsibilities between individuals who share a domestic connection. These cases usually involve parties who are related by blood or marriage, but family law can affect those in more distant or casual relationships as well. Due to the emotionally-charged nature of most family law cases, litigants are strongly advised to retain legal counsel.
The vast majority of family law proceedings come about as a result of the termination of a marriage or romantic relationship. Family law attorneys help their clients file for separation or divorce, alimony, and child custody, visitation, and support. Spouses married a short time may seek an annulment, and special rights may exist between same-sex couples. The division of property at the end of a marriage is also a common issue in family law cases.
With respect to property division at the time of divorce, every s

Traditionally, international law consisted of rules and principles governing the relations and dealings of nations with each other, though recently, the scope of international law has been redefined to include relations between states and individuals, and relations between international organizations. Public_international_law. concerns itself only with questions of rights between several nations or nations and the citizens or subjects of other nations. In contrast, Private_international_law deals with controversies between private persons, natural or juridical, arising out of situations having significant relationship to more than one nation. In recent years the line between public and private international law have became increasingly uncertain. Issues of private international law may also implicate issues of public international law, and many matters of private international law have substantial significance for the international community of nations.

What is Domestic Violence Law?
Domestic violence law provides the criminal rules for punishing those who cause emotional or physical harm to others with whom they share a family or other close relationship. It also deals with the civil protections available to victims of this type of harm. Federal legislation has been enacted making domestic violence a crime, most notably the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). However, the vast majority of domestic violence offenses are prosecuted under state law.
Convictions for domestic violence in all states require that the defendant?s conduct and relationship to the victim meet certain standards. The statutory provisions describing these aspects of the crime differ from state to state, but generally, both the conduct and the relationship are defined broadly.
For example, a typical state statute will prohibit any conduct that causes harm to the victim, or poses a threat of harm that puts the victim in immediate, re

criminal law: an overview
Criminal law involves prosecution by the government of a person for an act that has been classified as a crime. Civil cases. on the other hand, involve individuals and organizations seeking to resolve legal disputes. In a criminal case, the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case the victim brings the suit. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. However, persons found liable in a civil case may only have to give up property or pay money, but are not incarcerated.
A "crime" is any act or omission (of an act) in violation of a public law forbidding or commanding it. Though there are some common law crimes, most crimes in the United States are established by local, state, and federal governments. Criminal laws vary significantly from state to state. #Criminal law policy - European Commission
While the EU cannot adopt a general EU criminal code, EU criminal legislation can add, within the limits of EU competence, important value to the existing national criminal law systems.
Added value of EU rules
Action at EU level in this field is crucial for a number of reasons:
- The most serious types of organised crime are committed across borders. To prevent criminals from misusing those EU countries with the most lenient legal systems and 'safe havens' from appearing. a certain approximation of national laws can be necessary.
- Through adopting minimum standards for procedural rights in criminal proceedings and making the fight against crime more efficient, EU criminal law fosters citizens' confidence in a high level of security throughout the Union. This is of particular importance to those exercising their right of free movement.

#Criminal law
criminal law , the body of law that defines criminal offenses, regulates the apprehension, charging, and trial of suspected persons, and fixes penalties and modes of treatment applicable to convicted offenders.
Criminal law is only one of the devices by which organized societies protect the security of individual interests and ensure the survival of the group. There are, in addition, the standards of conduct instilled by family, school, and religion; the rules of the office and factory; the regulations of civil life enforced by ordinary police powers; and the sanctions available through tort actions. The distinction between criminal law and tort law is difficult to draw with real precision, but in general one may say that a tort is a private injury whereas a crime is conceived as an offense against the public, although the actual victim may be an individual.

For our US-based clients we additionally advise on matters concerning international purchases and sales of goods and produce, and bank-related matters.
For our Latin American and non-US clients, we also advise on customary US contractual matters. When US-based companies fail to pay for purchases or become subject to bankruptcy, we represent our non-US based clients, including credit insurers to collect the funds rightfully owed to them. As our attorneys are admitted in many US Federal courts and state courts, we are usually able to represent clients in many applicable jurisdictions, thus saving our clients considerable expense from not having to engage multiple law firms.
For all clients our focus is on their business objectives, we begin our representation by asking the client what it wants to achieve. Our attorneys and staff are fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

With BSA moving to One Oath and Law. the Venturing Code will be replaced by the Scout Law in late or early . The Cub Scout Law of the Pack will be replaced by the Scout Law in 2015. So if you are not familiar with the Scout Law, you can see it below and become familiar with it. Some history of the Scout Law is also given at the bottom of this article.
I like the simplicity of the Scout Law. It is brief and therefore easy for youth to memorize. But it covers a lot of ground.
A Scout is:
Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful,
Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty,
Brave, Clean, Reverent
The Scout Law used in the US is based on Lord Robert Baden-Powell s original Scout Law, published in Scouting for Boys in 1908. This law consisted of nine points. A tenth point (clean) was added by Baden-Powell in 1911. Baden-Powell was the founder of the Scouting movement, and so much of what he pu

Criminal law is the area of law that deals with the identification and prosecution of people being charged by the state or federal government for an act that has been classified as a crime.
Background of Criminal Law
Throughout the history of civilization, humans have endeavored to devise rules and punishments to regulate behavior considered dangerous or harmful. Over time these rules were codified into laws designed to address offensive behavior deemed criminal in its nature.
Criminal behavior is considered to be so offensive that a person who commits a crime may have his or her freedom taken away or suffer capital punishment and lose his or her life.
Every state and the federal government have criminal codes collections of statutes stating which behaviors can constitute criminal acts. The laws provide the elements of the offense and how a person convicted of committing the

If you or your loved one has been arrested for domestic violence or has been served with a DV restraining order anywhere in Southern California, discussing the matter with one of our Orange County domestic violence lawyers can help you tremendously, even if you don t retain our services. Of course, it is against the law to commit a battery or an assault against anyone, but, if a victim of abuse is your spouse, partner, or a parent of your child, it is considered more serious by law and the punishments are more severe as a result.
District attorneys treat these cases very seriously and almost every district attorney office in California has a special unit for which the goal is to prosecute and secure convictions for these cases. Charges often will still be filed even if a victim refuses to press charges. Furthermore, jail time is a common punishment in abuse cases, even if a defendant is a first-time offender.
If you are convicted of a crime such as a domestic assault

The basic feature of labor law in almost every country is that the rights and obligations of the worker and the employer between one another are mediated through the contract of employment between the two. This has been the case since the collapse of feudalism and is the core reality of modern economic relations. Many terms and conditions of the contract are however implied by legislation or common law, in such a way as to restrict the freedom of people to agree to certain things in order to protect employees, and facilitate a fluid labor market. In the U.S. for example, majority of state laws allow for employment to be "at will", meaning the employer can terminate an employee from a position for any reason, so long as the reason is not an illegal reason, including a termination in violation of public policy. [ 1 ]
One example in many countries [ 2 ] is the duty to provide written particulars of employment with the essentialia negotii (Latin for essential terms) to
