One of the major career fields international law degree graduates consider is the foreign service, working as a diplomat. There are approximately 3,000 people working as diplomats for the U.S. and the odds of being hired are relatively slim. A small minority of those who apply and test for positions are appointed. It is a long process, but the test is free.

Once an applicant passes that exam, she must also pass an oral assessment, a background investigation and medical tests before passing a final review and being placed on a list of candidates.

The State Department has embassies in 180 countries and has a number of internship opportunities available for students and recent grads that may help a grad get a foot in the door to becoming a diplomat.

According to salary.com, a senior U.S. diplomat can make in excess of $100,000 a year.

Law enforcement agencies are identified by jurisdiction. There are local law enforcement agencies such as the city police departments and transit police. State law enforcement agencies include the water police, harbor patrol or marine police. Federal law enforcement agencies include the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Secret Service.

There are far more federal law enforcement agencies than local and state. The Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Air Marshall are examples of federal law enforcement agencies.

City police such as the Los Angeles Police Department or the New York Police Department are examples of local law enforcement agencies. Police officers along with higher-ranked officers such as detectives, lieutenants and captains enforce the law inside the city limits.

Local law enforcement agencies have no jurisdiction outside the city where they are employed. The Los Angeles Police Department has no jurisdiction or power outsid ... Read more »

Legal Separation in North Carolina: The Separation Agreement and Property Settlement Contract

In North Carolina, the separation of a married couple takes place when they move into separate residences with the intent of living separate and apart. It is advisable for a couple contemplating legal separation in North Carolina to consult with their attorneys prior to their actual separation for the purpose of drafting a Separation Agreement and Property Settlement. This is a written contract between the spouses and can cover all or some of the issues involved in their separation and eventual divorce. And because a Separation Agreement and Property Settlement is a legally binding contract once it is signed by both spouses and notorized, it is important to consult with an attorney to fully understand your rights under NC statutes and separation laws before entering into any such contract.

#New immigration laws

We didn’t raise the Statue of Liberty with her back to the world, we did it with her light shining as a beacon to the world. And whether we were Irish or Italians or Germans crossing the Atlantic, or Japanese or Chinese crossing the Pacific; whether we crossed the Rio Grande or flew here from all over the world generations of immigrants have made this country into what it is. It’s what makes us special.

President Obama, November 21, 2014

America’s immigration system is broken. Too many employers game the system by hiring undocumented workers, and there are 11 million people living in the shadows. Neither is good for the economy or the country. President Obama is eager to work with both the House and the Senate on a comprehensive solution to immigration reform, similar to the bipartisan legislation that passed the Senate in 2013.

President Obama’s push for legislation to fix our broken immigration system garnered broad bipartisan supp ... Read more »

what you need to know before you file

north carolina laws on custody

In North Carolina. the law gives judges in the district courts the right to decide who has custody of minor children. Once a custody case is filed, the Judge has the power to make the decision about where the child lives and who will get to make decisions for the child.

The Judge will look at all the information affecting the child s life to make certain his/her decision is based on the best interest of the child. It is important that you raise all facts that will assist the Judge in making his/her decision.

There are two main types of custody. “Legal Custody” and “Physical Custody”

One of the biggest expenses you'll encounter as a law student are law books. They are not only expensive, but they also have frequent updates and changes, which means that buying older (less expensive) versions really isn't advisable.

So how can you save money on law books? Here are seven tips:

The best way to save money on law books is to shop as early as possible and consider all sources of books, including online sellers. This way you'll have plenty of time to price compare, find the best deals, and also, if you are buying used books, you'll be able to find them in the best condition possible.

If your professor hasn't provided a list of texts you'll need within a month of classes starting, contact him or her and ask.

One of the golden rules of shopping to compare prices, and buying law books is no different. Your school bookstore is always a cho ... Read more »

The OLR Research Report states that Idaho considers child abuse to be any action that can cause great bodily harm and even death. If a child suffers from unjustifiable pain or mental abuse, or is put in any type of situation that could be dangerous, the adult in charge could be charged with child abuse.

Kidjacked.com also states it is illegal in the state of Idaho to cause physical cruelty in excess of what is reasonably needed for proper discipline.

Idaho has laws restricting corporal punishment in group homes and foster homes; however, it has no laws regarding physical punishment in family child care, child care centers and in schools, according to stophitting.com.

#What is Elder Abuse?

What is Elder Abuse?

Each year hundreds of thousands of older persons are abused, neglected, and exploited. Many victims are people who are older, frail, and vulnerable and cannot help themselves and depend on others to meet their most basic needs. Abusers of older adults are both women and men, and may be family members, friends, or trusted others.

In general, elder abuse is a term referring to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult. Legislatures in all 50 states have passed some form of elder abuse prevention laws. Laws and definitions of terms vary considerably from one state to another, but broadly defined, abuse may be:

  • Physical Abuse inflicting physical pain or injury on a senior, e.g. slapping, bruising, or restraining by physical or chemical means.

#New UK immigration rules: will you be affected?

Non-EU migrants who have spent more than five years working in the country will be required to earn 35,000 per year or else face deportation, according to a policy that comes into effect in April next year. The policy, announced in 2012 by the home secretary Theresa May, has been criticised this week by the Royal College of Nursing. It predicted chaos in the health service, and urged the Home Office to add nursing to the list of occupations exempt from the rules and reconsider the salary threshold.

But nurses won’t be the only people affected by the changes. Migration figures published in May reveal migration for work from outside Europe rose by 24,000 to 68,000 in 2014, with nearly all coming on skilled work visas. 35,000 is a salary that won’t affect those working in finance or, for the most part, IT, but there are many other sectors with workers who will be forced to leave when the pay threshold comes into force.

The drive to advance a career on a limited budget can be challenging while maintaining steady employment, but options exist to earn paralegal certification that will help you find a new job or get a promotion. Some employers are willing to cover part or all of tuition fees for employees, so if you are a secretary who desires paralegal certification, consider inquiring at your firm.

In general, it is prudent to use caution when researching free paralegal certification online. Few legitimate educational institutions offer free certification. Carefully review any website for evidence of accreditation or at least Better Business Bureau approval. While taking advantage of Internet resources for personal study can be helpful, do not give your personal information to unsecured websites. If you do not have paralegal certification and you want to earn it to be eligible for a job, remember that some employers will provide the training you need, if they require it at all.

#New York City - State Labor Law Violations Attorney, Lawyer

Both the state of New York and New York City has specific  labor laws  that are in place to protect employees from being mistreated by their employer. These labor laws ensure that employees are properly compensated for their work and receive time off, among other labor considerations. Unfortunately, at Cary Kane LLP  we know that many New York employers violate these city and state labor laws, causing employees to be mistreated and unfairly harmed. We understand City State Labor Law Violations.

    Current State Labor Laws

While many employees know their basic rights and when these have been violated, most are not aware of the many various legal rights afforded to them by New York labor law. Some of these commonly unknown labor laws include:

    • The requirement for all employees to be notified of their pay rate and pay timeline by February 1st of every year

#New York Lemon Laws - Lemon Law Attorneys

    Page Overview

You can't believe it. The new car you bought makes an atrocious knocking noise when you drive it, and the dealer's mechanic can't seem to find the problem. Do you have to just bite the bullet and buy a lifetime supply of earplugs?

Fortunately, you do have recourse. New York has laws to protect you in case a dealer sells you a "lemon"―a car that is unsafe, inefficient, or riddled with defects.

New York's New Car Lemon Law compels the manufacturer of such a car to make the necessary repairs (usually through the dealer that sold it), refund your money, or replace the vehicle. The law is limited to cars used primarily for personal use and does not cover motorcycles, ATVs, or the living quarters of an RV. A car is covered under the New Car Lemon Law if all of the following apply:

It was covered under a manufacturer's warranty when it was originally delivered to its first buyer. It was bou ... Read more »

Materials related to law and government that were written by or for lay persons also have been included, as have government sites that provide even quite general information about themselves or their agencies.

New York State residents are lucky to be protected by one of America’s most comprehensive lemon law statutes. It is part of the State’s regulation governing motor vehicle manufacturers and, like other U.S. lemon laws, is intended to ensure that consumers have legal remedies enabling them to enforce the warranties that dealers and manufacturers make regarding their automobiles.

    #Newton s Laws of Motion

This page is intended for college, high school, or middle school students. For younger students, a simpler explanation of the information on this page is available on the Kid's Page.

The motion of an aircraft through the air can be explained and described by physical principals discovered over 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton. Newton worked in many areas of mathematics and physics. He developed the theories of gravitation in 1666, when he was only 23 years old. Some twenty years later, in 1686, he presented his three laws of motion in the "Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis. The laws are shown above, and the application of these laws to aerodynamics are given on separate slides.

Newton's first law states that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of an external force. This is normally taken as the definition of inertia. The key po ... Read more »

About William W. Cook’s gifts to the Law School

The entire collection of buildings in the Law Quad was built, and then donated to the University, by William W. Cook (1858-1930), a native of Hillsdale Michigan who graduated from the Literary College in 1880 and the Law School in 1882. Cook earned a fortune in New York City. He spent most of his career as general counsel for The Mackay Companies, which from about 1880-1930 provided the only competition to the Western Union in the field of telegraph and cable service.

The process of giving a building to the University back then was far different from what is done now. Cook simply asked the University to buy the land where he wanted the buildings to be, then hired an architect and oversaw the construction process himself. He, not the University, was the client, and he decided every detail about the buildings. When construction was complete, Cook donated the buildings to the University.

Cook chose, for the Law Sch ... Read more »

In the United States. pre-law refers to any course of study taken by an undergraduate in preparation for study at a law school .

The American Bar Association requires law schools that it approves to require at least a bachelor's degree for North American students for admission. But no specific degree or major is considered "pre-law"; [ 1 ] unlike pre-med. an undergraduate student is not required to take a set of prerequisites in order to get into law school. Therefore, universities lack an official "pre-law" concentration. Both holders of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees (and more rarely, higher degrees such as the master's degree and doctorate ), as well as students of most undergraduate majors attend law schools. Specific law schools have their own requirements; there are also standard requirements set forth by the ABA and the Law School Admission Council .

#News - Republican Attorneys General Association

When EPA worries about regulating puddles, it has gone too far

Posted by Republican Attorneys General Association July 01, 2015 1:06 PM

The latest example of Obama Administration overreach is here. A new regulation issued by the Environmental Protection Agency would greatly expand federal authority over Alabama waters. The administration is selling the rule as protecting drinking water, but make no mistake — this is about power and control.

Just how bad is the new rule? It is so broad and so expansive that the EPA was forced to specifically exclude puddles from the regulation's reach. While I'm grateful that the federal government won't be inspecting Alabamians' front yards every time it rains, the fact that such an exemption was needed speaks to just how dangerous — and costly — this regulation will be if it is allowed to stand.

The rule expands EPA's authority far beyond what was intended by the Cl ... Read more »

    Who Administers ERISA?

Complaints, concerns, and questions about ERISA laws should be directed to your local office.

Who Must Abide by ERISA Law?

The protective laws under ERISA only apply to private employers (non-government) that offer employer-sponsored health insurance coverage and other benefit plans to employees. ERISA does not require employers to offer plans; it only sets rules for benefits that an employer chooses to offer.

  • Smart Services

Of course, there is more to say. Much more. But if you want to boil it all down to its essence, that’s why our company exists.

    That’s what we do.

If you’re like most, you have some immediate questions. Like “How do you do that?” and “How much does it cost?” (always a popular question ) and “How can I be sure it will work?” (you can’t, but this might make you feel better. )

Here’s how we think you should proceed. You should start by reading a very short article entitled “Ten Reasons Lawyers Don’t Do Marketing. ” Then you might want to see some examples of our work, or watch one of Mark Merenda’s videos on law firm marketing . After that, you should read the stories of some of our clients. And then you might want to contact us .

However, we know our audience, and most of them don’t have the time or patience for the steps above — at least not as a first step. If you fall into that group, ... Read more »

While no particular course is required for admission to most law schools, certain majors lend themselves to the transition. Political science, pre-law or legal studies and criminal justice are appropriate, since they focus on legal issues. Law schools view a bachelor's degree in English or communications favorably since these majors demonstrate attention to language and an ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Psychology, with its focus on human nature, and philosophy, with its emphasis on rhetoric and debate, are also helpful.

    #Northwestern Law - TLS wiki

Known as an innovative, business-oriented law school, Northwestern Law offers more to its students than just a prime central Chicago location. With its well-established preference for students with work experience and demonstrated interpersonal skills, the school fosters a professional environment. Employment statistics, though relatively solid, are weaker than most of the traditional top 14 law schools. The total cost of attendance, however, is second-highest, behind only Berkeley for out-of-staters.

One 2L said: "The student body is excellent, most of which has done something interesting before law school. Students tend to bring interesting perspectives into the classroom as a result, and I think this is a major advantage over schools primarily composed of people straight through from undergrad."

Northwestern Law places a heavy emphasis on global enterprises and practical learning and has highly regarded study abroad, clinical, and int ... Read more »

I also know (and did Google) that there are no lawsuits filed against them at present, nor have there ever been. By 1948, the United Nations’ new Human Rights Commission had captured the attention of the world. Under the dynamic chairmanship of Eleanor Roosevelt—President Franklin Roosevelt’s widow, a human rights champion in her own right and the United States delegate to the UN—the Commission set out to draft the document that became the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Roosevelt, credited with its inspiration, referred to the Declaration as the “international Magna Carta for all mankind.” It was adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948.

In its preamble and in Article 1, the Declaration unequivocally proclaims the inherent rights of all human beings: “Disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people.
