When small spherical bodies move through a viscous medium, the bodies drag the layers of the medium that are in contact with them. This dragging results in relative motion between different layers, which are away from the body. Therefore, a viscous drag comes into play, opposing the motion of the body. It is found that this backward force or viscous drag, increases with increase in velocity of the body.

According to Stoke, the viscous drag 'f'', depends on the coefficient of viscosity ' h ' of the medium, the velocity (v) of the body and radius (r) of the spherical body.

Stokes' law explains why the speed of a raindrop is less than a freely falling body with constant velocity, from the height of clouds.

The same law helps a man coming down with the help of a parachute, to slow down.

Terminal velocity refers to the constant velocity, acquired by a freely falling body in a viscous medium. Consider a small spherical body, falling freely due to gravity in ... Read more »

#Lemon Laws legal definition of Lemon Laws

Lemon Laws

Laws governing the rights of purchasers of new and used motor vehicles that do not function properly and which have to be returned repeatedly to the dealer for repairs.

Laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia provide remedies to purchasers of defective new vehicles, often called lemons. These so-called lemon laws protect consumers from substantial defects occurring within a specified period after purchase and provide that a manufacturer must either replace the lemon with a new, comparable car or refund the full purchase price. According to the consumer advocate group Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, automakers repurchase 50,000 vehicles a year, about .33 percent of the 15 million vehicles sold annually.

California and Connecticut passed the first lemon laws in 1982, in response to dissatisfaction with remedies in state sales laws and the 1975 federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Ac ... Read more »

Adultery is voluntary sexual relations between an individual who is married and someone who is not the individual's spouse. Adultery is viewed by the law in many jurisdictions as an offense injurious to public morals and a mistreatment of the marriage relationship.

Statutes attempt to discourage adultery by making such behavior punishable as a crime and by allowing a blameless party to obtain a Divorce against an adulterous spouse.

Although adultery has been historically regarded as a legal wrong, it has not always been considered a crime. In Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, adultery was punishable solely in courts created by the church to impose good morals. In the ecclesiastical courts, adultery was any act of sexual intercourse by a married person with someone not his or her spouse. The act was considered wrongful regardless of whether the other person was married. At Common Law, adultery was wrongful intercourse between a married woman and any ... Read more »

Light and the Law of Reflection

Learn about the reflection of light in this video segment adapted from Shedding Light on Science. Ball bearings are used to represent photons and illustrate the reflective property of light. A beam of light traveling through a water table demonstrates how two different surfaces a mirror and a paper card reflect light. Although light always follows the law of reflection, see how the seemingly smooth paper is actually rough and affects the way the light is reflected. Ray diagrams and a demonstration of ball bearings dropped onto smooth and rough tiles illustrate why reflected light is scattered from rough surfaces.

This video is available in both English and Spanish audio, along with corresponding closed captions.

Tough thing to answer. You will need to weigh a number of factors such as cost, claim to some form of accreditation, bar pass rates, etc.

Neither is accredited by the ABA obviously which is highly important so even DETC accreditation may not be worth much EXCEPT that you can technically claim to have an accredited degree and this may or may not be important if you are looking for a job where an 'accredited' degree is required (eg my employer will consider NA but not UnA). Obviously a DETC degree is not likely to mean much if you are going to use the law degree as a law degree (in many circumstances). You already know that.

So, is having the degree DETC accredited worth more to you than Northwestern Cal's higher bar pass rate? N.Western is cheaper a ... Read more »

While Maryland labor law doesn't require most employers to provide breaks to their employees, the state does require meal breaks for retail employees working shifts longer than six hours. If a retail employer denies an employee her break, she can file a complaint. If the state finds in her favor, she may receive three times her hourly wage for each violation, while her employer may be assessed a civil fine of up to $300.

State law mandates all retail employees who work from four to six hours be given a 15-minute shift break. This break should be paid, since federal law requires breaks shorter than 20 minutes to be paid.

Employees working six hours or more are entitled to a 30-minute non-working break for a meal, which is unpaid. This break may be a working break if the employee's duties prevent her from being fully relieved of duty but allow her to eat while working. The employer and employee have to agree to this ahead of time, and the employee then must be paid for ... Read more »

There are many career paths in law, although students most commonly become either Solicitors or Barristers.

If you work as a solicitor you may find yourself working for a law firm, but you might work in central or local government, an in-house legal department (for example, a bank or corporation), the Crown Prosecution Service or the magistrates' courts.

A career as a solicitor will demand several qualities of you:

  • intellectual ability
  • versatility
  • people skills / a desire to work with and for people
  • commitment

If you want to become a solicitor you should weigh up carefully the cost of training that's required to complete the qualification process. A number of funding options are available to you although students are by no means guaranteed to receive any form of financial assistance.

The public variety of this type of law applies when two or more countries or sovereign entities are involved. These laws might cover topics such as human rights, wartime laws and the laws at sea. Violations of these laws might result in ramifications such as sanctions by other countries, the ending of certain agreements between the countries that are involved or, in the most severe cases, declarations of war.

When legal matters involve people, businesses or private organizations from separate countries, rather than government bodies, it is considered private international law. This type of law often involves settling matters such as which country's laws apply or where the case will be decided. It often is necessary for governments to step in to help their citizens settle these matters or to help them achieve a fair result.

In addition to matters such as human rights, maritime laws and war crimes, subjects that typically are covered by international laws include drug ... Read more »

Megan's Law is the colloquial term used to denote a number of state laws in the United States that require law enforcement authorities to identify what are generally called sex offenders to the public at large through various media, including in some cases the Internet .

The characteristic feature of the laws requires those subject to it to notify the local police department of any change of address after being released from prison; this requirement may be imposed permanently upon the offender, or for a fixed period of time (usually at least ten years) depending on the individual state, and sometimes on the nature or gravity of the specific offense. Some states that have such a law require persons convicted of any sexual assault, whether the victim was a child or not, to notify the authorities of their whereabouts; some states require notification only for certain types of sexual assaults (usually the more egregious crimes); and at least one state Kansas extended the ... #Libel and Slander - Libel and Slander

The law of defamation protects a person s reputation and good name against communications that are false and derogatory. Defamation consists of two torts: libel and slander. Libel consists of any defamation that can be seen, most typically in writing. Slander consists of an oral defamatory communications. The elements of libel and slander are nearly identical to one another.

Historically, the law governing slander focused on oral statements that were demeaning to others. By the 1500s, English courts treated slander actions as those for damages. Libel developed differently, however. English printers were required to be licensed by and give a bond to the government because the printed word was believed to be a threat to political stability. Libel included any criticism of the English government, and a person who committed libel committed a crime. This history carried over in part to the United States, where Congress under the presidency ... Read more »

#List of Degrees

Undergraduate Degrees

There are two broad categories of undergraduate college degrees. associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees. The average amount of time it takes to earn a degree - also called time to degree - is two years for an associate's degree and four years for a bachelor's degree. Some credits from associate's degree programs can typically be applied toward a bachelor's degree, but an associate's degree is not required for entrance to a bachelor's degree program.

Associate's Degrees

Most associate's degree programs are offered at vocational schools and community colleges, although some national universities have also started conferring 2-year degrees. Students who are seeking general education at this level are most likely to earn an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or an Associate of Science (A.S.) in topics ranging from literature to computer programming. The A.A. and A.S. degrees are most suited to transfer to a 4-year college or ... Read more »

An MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree is the most widely-recognised business degree in the world and its popularity continues to grow, particularly in Asia.

The origins of the MBA go back more than a century to the Ivy League universities in the US. Dartmouth College established the first graduate business school in the US in 1900 – then called the Amos Tuck School of Administration and Finance. Harvard Business School launched its first postgraduate management degree in 1908.

The popularity of the MBA grew in Europe 50 years later, following the establishment of Insead in Fontainebleau, near Paris, by a group of Harvard graduates. It enrolled its first MBA cohort in September 1959. London Business School opened its doors to MBA students in 1966.

Today the MBA is usually seen as a post-experience degree, designed for those with some work/management experience. The full-time degree can last anything from 10 to 24 months but it is also taught in a n ... Read more »

Staff Writers May 6,

When it comes time to apply for law school, many students also find themselves applying for a series of law school loans, grants, and scholarships. Law school student loans are offered both federally and privately to students who have completed an undergraduate degree, taken the LSAT exam, and are prepared to begin law school. Before applying for any loans, however, students may want to to exhaust all grant and scholarship options available to them, as law schools can be quite costly. Whatever isn t covered by scholarships, grants, and financial aid can then be supplemented by law school loans.

Each loan program will have a set of requirements laid out for applicants; however, there are a few general criteria students should expect to come across. For Federal Direct Loans. students are required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine their eligibility for loan assistance. It is illegal to drive a mini-truck on any U.S. highway, including those in Missouri. They are considered too small to be on the road next to regular-sized vehicles without a safety issue. France has long been one of Europe s most coveted destinations for immigrants. A draft bill introduced to the French parliament will make it even more difficult to immigrate to France.

The new recommendations are for a more selective process that concentrates on recruiting only skilled immigrants.

France, like other European countries, is taking a harder look at the immigrants it lets in. The drive toward "selective" immigration is inspired by electoral politics, by fears that some immigrants are not integrating and may even be vectors for terrorism and by widely shared concerns that they overtax welfare systems and compete for scarce jobs

The new immigration laws will c reate a renewable, three-year work permit for highly skilled foreigners.

It does away with a provision that allows foreigners who have been in the country for more than 10 years, even those here illegally, to apply for French citizenship.

The government will be required to sub ... Read more »

    Stay Connected

    LL.M. Program

The LL.M. Program is a one-year, full-time program beginning in the fall semester. It is an opportunity for our students to specialize in fields not fully covered in their previous law work; to broaden their knowledge of their current field of practice; or to explore new areas of interest in legal practice.

The key to a satisfying and enriching LL.M. experience is student choice. Columbia offers a general LL.M. degree, giving students much freedom to select their courses from the Law School s incredibly rich curriculum. A Columbia LL.M. degree can comprise a wide variety of subjects or have a more narrow focus; there are no study tracks. We help our students design an individual program of study to meet their academic and professional goals whether to broaden their general preparation, specialize in a particular field or acquire knowledge of the American legal system, international law or other legal systems. ... social security law: an overview

Social security is designed, as the title suggests, to provide security. To protect individuals from unforeseen catastrophes, the government spreads certain risks among all members of society so that no single family bears the full burden of such occurrences.

In the United States, the Social Security Program was created in 1935 (42 U.S.C. 301 et seq . ) to provide old age, survivors, and disability insurance benefits to workers and their families. Unlike welfare. social security benefits are paid to an individual or his or her family at least in part on the basis of that person's employment record and prior contributions to the system. The program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and since 1965 it has included health insurance benefits under the Medicare program. While the original act used Social Security in a broad sense and included federally funded welfare programs and unemployment compensation ... Read more »

#LLM GUIDE - What is an LLM?

    LL.M. Graduates at Case Western

The LL.M. (Master of Laws) is an internationally recognized postgraduate law degree. It is usually obtained by completing a one-year full-time program. Law students and professionals frequently pursue the LL.M. to gain expertise in a specialized field of law, for example in the area of tax law or international law. Many law firms prefer job candidates with an LL.M. degree because it indicates that a lawyer has acquired advanced, specialized legal training, and is qualified to work in a multinational legal environment.

In most countries, lawyers are not required to hold an LL.M. degree, and many do not choose to obtain one. An LL.M. degree by itself generally does not qualify graduates to practice law. In most cases, LL.M. students must first obtain a professional degree in law, e.g. the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in the United Kingdom or the Juris Doctor (J.D.) in the United States, and pas ... A blog with advice about the law.

While the best way to avoid being arrested for a DUI is certainly to avoid drinking and driving a vehicle, there are some ways that you can circumvent a traffic stop that may lead to an arrest and the need for DUI lawyers. While this list is not meant to encourage drinking and driving, it may be of help when you find yourself in an unfortunate situation.

First, you should do your best to avoid being pulled over in the first place. Before you drive, take a moment to check your car to ensure that everything is working properly. A broken headlight or burned out brake light can be cause for a traffic stop, so do not drive if your car is not functioning properly.

While it is important to drive slowly, try not to drive too slowly. This can make you stand out and draw attention to the way you are driving, meaning a traffic stop will happen if you come across a police officer. The best DUI lawyers know that frequent speed changes can ... Read more »

Lawyers (also called attorneys or counsel) serve as advocates for people and organizations. They represent clients both to the court and to opposing parties. Lawyers can represent clients in criminal cases, where a law has been broken, and in civil cases, in which one party is suing another.

Lawyers are also important partners in situations that don’t involve the courtroom, advising clients about their legal rights and obligations for personal or business issues. They are trained to interpret complicated systems of laws and navigate the court system.

First, a lawyer will advise you as to whether or not you actually need legal help. It’s not always obvious whether an issue is a legal matter or something that can be resolved without involving the court system. A lawyer will help you answer these initial questions.

Once you’ve decided to hire a lawyer, then they have the power to represent you to the court and to opposing parties. Your lawyer is your most import ... Read more »

The absence of any break law in Indiana means employers can make employees work any number of hours daily with no break. Employees who want to work at such a business must accept the employer #039;s conditions. Employers may decide to offer rest periods for the sake of improving worker efficiency or to be competitive in hiring with other businesses.

Indiana employees who are part of a labor union may get the right to daily break periods as part of the union #039;s collective bargaining agreement with the employer. Along with wages and other issues relating to the length and format of the workday, break periods are typically a primary consideration for collective bargaining agents.

Under federal rules, airline pilots, truck drivers and bus drivers must receive rest periods after working a certain number of hours consecutively. If you work in one of these fields for a company that is based in Indiana, that employer must adhere to the federal regulations. For example, p ... Read more »

Online diplomas are certificates indicating the successful completion of a particular course of study by using an online learning method, such as distance learning. It is possible today to obtain high school diploma online as well as complete college level studies and receive an accredited diploma online for many majors. However, not all online diplomas are issued by accredited institutions. Many traditional universities have created online campuses to augment their brick and mortar locations. Depending on the structure of the distance learning programs offered by a given college or university, the student may be required to attend a minimum number of classes at a physical location as well as attend classes in a virtual environment. However, advances in online communications have led to the development of many degree programs that make it possible to obtain online diplomas without ever visiting a physical campus.

    LLM Guide: The Basics

Like any other graduate degree, a Master of Laws (LLM) requires a prior degree in this case a Juris Doctor (JD). There are several important differences between the two degrees, the most basic being that a JD is a professional degree that enables individuals to practice law, while an LLM is an advanced graduate degree, which denotes expertise in a specific area of law, or knowledge of American law for foreign law school graduates. An LLM on its own does not enable someone to practice law.

Applicants to LLM degree programs are usually required to submit their law school transcripts, a personal statement, letters of references (varies for different LLM programs), and sometimes a passing score on an English proficiency examination such as IELTS or TOEFL. The infamous LSAT a standardized test used by law schools as a index for admissions to JD programs is not used for LLM admissions.

Once admitted, students working towards LLM ... Read more »

Masters of Business Administration (MBA) are postgraduate degree programs in management, in their own league. The MBA is the traditional academic offer for management education. The universities answer to questions from business for a precise and profound qualification for the future and modern managers based on a standardized title. It is frequently shortened as MBA or M.B.A. and in opposition to the Master of Science (MSc) or the Master of Arts (MA) it without a doubt points to one program solely.

MBA is a program designed for students who want to further their academic skills and apply them to actual real-life business situations. It guides students to reflect and reposition themselves in terms of choosing their future careers. Students gain a broad understanding of the key functions of a range of business areas and use these skills to contribute to strategic direction of a business.

#Local Elder Law Attorneys, Estate Planning and Medicaid Lawyers

What is an elder law attorney?

The specialty of "elder law" evolved in the 1980s as it became increasingly clear that the complicated legal issues confronting seniors - in particular qualifying for Medicaid coverage of long-term care - were beyond the expertise of general-practice attorneys. In recent years, we've increasingly seen the field described as "elder care law" and the lawyers as "elder care" attorneys.

Elder law or elder care attorneys typically help families:
    • plan for Medicaid coverage of long-term care, and apply for coverage when the time comes;
    • plan and administer an estate;
    • represent guardians and conservators; and
    • create and administer trusts.

Unlike many other areas of the law, elder law is defined by the needs of the client, rather than a particular field of law. Because of this, elder law attorneys are also aware that their cli ... Read more »

At many schools, including Harvard and Stanford, it was the first year that average pay exceeded pre-recession levels. The $144,750 average commanded by Harvard MBAs was finally above the $144,261 that members of the Class of 2008 received. The $142,834 average by Stanford MBAs exceeded the $140,771 received by Stanford grads in 2008. And at nearly all the schools, average pay hit new record levels.

MBA graduates from 44 different business schools in the U.S. landed jobs with six-figure pay packages last year, up from 24 in 2010 when the Great Recessi ... Read more »

Legislation (or "statutory law ") is law which has been promulgated (or "enacted ") by a legislature or other governing body. or the process of making it. (Another source of law is judge-made law or case law ) Before an item of legislation becomes law it may be known as a bill. and may be broadly referred to as "legislation" while it remains under consideration to distinguish it from other business. Legislation can have many purposes: to regulate, to authorize, to proscribe, to provide (funds), to sanction, to grant, to declare or to restrict.

In some jurisdictions legislation must be confirmed by the executive branch of government before it enters into force as law. Primary legislation may delegate to the executive or other parties limited powers to make secondary legislation. such as Rules, Regulations and Orders which implement its policy in detail.

Under the Westminster system. an item of primary legislation is known as an Act of Parliament after ... Read more »

    #LLM Guide

Choosing to study for an LLM is a big choice, and there s plenty of factors that you should take into account. This handy LLM Guide will highlight matters to consider including how you undertake your LLM, funding options, LLM subjects, law schools and application tips.

    Full-time, Part-time or Distance Learning?

The difference here is pretty obvious. A full-time LLM will require a student to devote themselves entirely to the LLM, just like an undergraduate degree. You will attend lectures, participate in seminars and undertake independent study. Spending about 40 hours a week learning, a full-time LLM will take between nine and 12 months to complete.

A part-time LLM programme will also involve attending lectures and seminars. However, the times when these take place differ; the majority of part-time postgraduates continue to work whilst they study, which means their university contact hours in which they attend lectures and group ... #LLM Info

What is an LLM? A Master of Laws, or LLM, is an advanced academic degree not to be confused with a professional degree in law, such as a Juris Doctor (JD). There are several important differences between an LLM and a JD. Lawyers typically earn an LLM for one of two reasons: to become familiar with a foreign system of law. or to gain expertise in a specific area of law .

A JD, on the other hand, allows lawyers to practice law in the United States. Some states allow lawyers with professional degrees from foreign countries to practice law in the United States if they earn an LLM focused on the American legal system, such as that offered by the online @WashULaw. but LLM regulations vary between states. Lawyers interested in taking this route to practicing law in the United States should contact their local Bar Admission Offices. An LLM earned for the sake of expertise in a narrow field of law does not affect a lawyer’s eligibility to practice law – it simply deepens a ... Read more »

The ATL School and Firm Insiders Survey asks self-identified current students, alumni, and practicing lawyers to rate major aspects of life at their law school (academics, social life, clinical training, career services, financial aid advising) and/or law firm (compensation, hours, morale, culture, training). We then translate these ratings into letter grades, where the mean score for each particular ratings category is the equivalent of a “B.”

Now there are three choices when it comes to settling your divorce: litigation, mediation, or collaboration. Here s an introduction to this non-adversarial practice.

    Share this page:

A new alternative to dispute resolution, "Collaborative Family Practice ", is now the third resource in a lineup consisting of litigation, mediation. and collaboration. And like mediation, its closest neighbor, it is distinguished from litigation by employing non-adversarial techniques.

If the parties can't reach agreement, then the lawyers must withdraw, and neither they nor any member of their firms may represent the clients in subsequent litigation. This is to ensure that there is no "holding back": the participants are committed to reaching a reasonable settlement, and there's no room to maneuver for litigation leverage. The lawyers' attitude, which they must demonstrate to their clients, is that there will be no cross-examination later -- not even a thought of it. The matter ... Read more »

While you may think that jobs in the legal field are limited largely to opportunities for attorneys, there are also dozens of other professional positions available to those interested in law. Although lawyers rank among the most visible and well-compensated of the positions available in the field, there are many professional paths in the legal field that don't impose the significant educational and financial resources that the completion of a law degree usually requires.

In addition to the positions available for attorneys, the field of law includes opportunities for legal secretaries, law firm administrators, paralegals, investigators, consultants, court reporters, legal assistants, clerks, document specialists, and more. In addition, there are hundreds of related opportunities available in the criminal justice field, ranging from behind-the-scenes administrators to front-line detectives and law enforcement officers.

    What is Stalking?

Stalking is the unwanted pursuit of another person, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property. By its nature, stalking is not a one-time event.

The individual's actions must be considered in connection with other actions to determine if someone is being stalked. It includes repeated harassing or threatening behavior toward another person, whether that person is a total stranger, slight acquaintance, current or former intimate partner, or anyone else.

    Stalking Laws

Stalking is a relatively new crime now on the books in every state. Stalking laws in most states pertain to a relatively new crime involving a clear pattern of conduct in which the offender follows, harasses, or threatens another person, putting that person in fear for his or her safety. In the common law. legal advice is the giving of a formal opinion regarding the substance or procedure of the law, usually received from a solicitor. barrister or lawyer. ordinarily in exchange for financial or other tangible compensation. Advice given without remuneration is normally referred to as being pro bono publico (in the public good), or colloquially, pro bono .

A microeconomic law that states, all other factors being equal, as the price of a good or service increases, the quantity of goods or services that suppliers offer will increase, and vice versa. The law of supply says that as the price of an item goes up, suppliers will attempt to maximize their profits by increasing the quantity offered for sale.

The chart below depicts the law of supply using a supply curve, which is always upward sloping. A, B and C are points on the supply curve. Each point on the curve reflects a direct correlation between quantity supplied (Q) and price (P). So, at point A, the quantity supplied will be Q1 and the price will be P1, and so on.

The law of supply is so intuitive that you may not even be aware of all the examples around you.

Here are some laws to be aware of whether you are biking or driving a motor vehicle:

    • Bicycle Helmets - Currently, there is no state law requiring helmet use. However, some cities and counties do require helmets. See Localities Requiring Bicycle Helmets .
  • Riding on the Road - When riding on a roadway, a cyclist has all the rights and responsibilities of a vehicle driver (RCW 46.61.755 ). Cyclists who violate traffic laws may be ticketed (RCW 46.61.750 ).
  • Roads Closed to Bicycles - Some designated sections of the state's limited access highway system may be closed to bicycles for safety reasons. See State Highway Sections Closed to Bicycles for more informat ... Read more »
