#U. S. appeals court upholds restrictive Texas abortion law
AUSTIN, Texas A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld the main provisions of a restrictive Texas abortion law including one requiring clinics to have certain hospital-grade facilities, a regulatory hurdle critics said was designed to shut down abortion providers.
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, based in New Orleans, permitted the 2013 law to be applied across the state, although it exempted the application of some provisions to a clinic in the southern city of McAllen. The exemptions had been granted by a lower court on the grounds that its distance from other clinics could cause an undue burden on women in that area.
In its decision, the court said the state's measures were intended to protect women's health.
Under the "ambulatory surgical center" requirement, clinics must meet a set of building standards ranging from widening halls to having facilities for certain surgeries.

#U. S. court upholds ruling against Puerto Rico bankruptcy law
The U.S. flag flies in front of the Supreme Court in Washington, in this May 18, 2015 file photo.
Reuters/Joshua Roberts/Files
n">A U.S. appeals court affirmed a lower court decision to strike down Puerto Rican legislation aimed at granting local municipalities the right to enter bankruptcy, but one judge in a concurring opinion said excluding the U.S. territory's public entities from federal bankruptcy law was unconstitutional.
Puerto Rico passed the so-called Recovery Act last year to give certain public corporations, with around $20 billion in debt, the ability to restructure financially in an orderly process. Puerto Rico is currently struggling with a total debt load of around $72 billion, which it says it is unable to pay.
"Besides being irrational and arbitrary, the exclusion of Puerto Rico's power to authorize its municipalities to request federal bankruptcy relief should be re-exa

#U. S. Divorce Law
Individual State Divorce Laws
U.S. Divorce/Dissolution
Divorce in America is governed by the laws of the individual state in which it occurs. Divorce, also known as "dissolution of marriage," is a legal process in which a judge or other authority legally terminates a marriage, restoring them to the status of being single and permitting them to marry other individuals. Divorce proceedings also include matters of spousal support, child custody, child support, distribution of property and division of debt. Divorce laws vary from state to state. While divorcing spouses once were required to show a reason for the dissolution of the marriage by assigning fault to one of the parties (like adultery, sterility, abandonment, insanity, or imprisonment), every state now allows for "no fault" divorces (usually on the basis of "irreconcilable differences"). Nevertheless, many states still allow their courts to take into account the behavior of the parties w

#Ancient Roman Laws
Since the days of the Law of the Twelve Tables, developed during the early republic, the Roman legal system was characterized by a formalism that lasted for more than 1.000 years.
Early Roman law was drawn from custom and statutes, but later during the times of the empire, the emperors asserted their authority as the ultimate source of law.
Their edicts, judgments, administrative instructions, and responses to petitions were all collected with the comments of legal scholars.
"What pleases the emperor has the force of law." As the law and scholarly commentaries on it expanded, the need grew to codify and to regularize conflicting opinions.
The basis for Roman law was the idea that the exact form, not the intention, of words or of actions produced legal consequences. Romans recognized that there are witnesses to actions and words, but not to intentions. Roman civil law allowed great flexibility in adopting new ideas or extending leg

#Anti-internet piracy law adopted by Spanish government - BBC News

Your Annual Troop Program Plan = Satisfied Boy Scouts and families = A lifelong love of Scouting!
Dear Committee Chair, Scoutmaster, and Senior Patrol Leader:
Let's talk about one of the key elements of all successful troops and an indicator of a potentially successful year. Of course that would be the troop's annual program plan and planning conference.
Research conducted by Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana, showed that a common element of strong troops is they all have a good annual program planned a year in advance that is then shared with all families in the form of a calendar. The important result of a shared annual program calendar is that your troop will attract more families and Boy Scouts will stay involved longer.
Two other key elements of successful troops identified in that study were training and having just the right leader to start with.
Here's how a troop program planning conference works. A month

#Arizona Immigration Law (S. B. 1070)
On April 23, 2010, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law Senate Bill 1070 aimed at preventing illegal immigration that has significantly affected the Mexico-bordering state over many decades. The new law, entitled Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, would require law enforcement officials to enforce existing federal immigration laws in the state by checking the immigration status of a person they have "reasonable suspicion" of being in the U.S. illegally. An immigrant found without proper documentation would be charged with a misdemeanor.
Although the law says nothing about deportation, it allows law enforcement agencies to immediately transfer a person it believes is in violation of any U.S. or state laws into Customs or Border Protection, and subsequently, to a federal facility in the state.
The impact of S.B. 1070 is far-reaching. If the law takes effect on July 29, 2010, issues involving state's rights,

#Arizona - s SB 1070
The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the most hotly disputed part of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law, S.B. 1070, which requires police to determine the immigration status of someone arrested or detained when there is “reasonable suspicion” they are not in the U.S. legally. The ACLU, along with a coalition of civil rights organizations, will continue to challenge the Arizona law on other constitutional grounds.
After SB 1070 passed in 2010, two dozen copycat bills were introduced in state legislatures across the country; five passed in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah. The ACLU and a coalition of civil rights organizations have filed lawsuits in all six states.
Laws inspired by Arizona's SB 1070 invite rampant racial profiling against Latinos, Asian-Americans and others presumed to be "foreign" based on how they look or sound. They also authorize police to demand papers proving citizenship or immigration status from anyone they stop a

#Antitrust laws
Antitrust: An Overview
Trusts and monopolies are concentrations of economic power in the hands of a few. Economists believe that such control injures both individuals and the public because it leads to anticompetitive practices in an effort to obtain or maintain total control. Anticompetitive practices then lead to price controls and diminished individual initiative. These results in turn cause markets to stagnate and depress economic growth.
Because of fears during the late 1800s that monopolies dominated America's free market economy, Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890 to combat anticompetitive practices, reduce market domination by individual corporations, and preserve unfettered competition as the rule of trade. The Sherman Antitrust Act forms the foundation and the basis for most federal antitrust litigation.
As for the states, many have adopted antitrust laws that parallel the Sherman Antitrust Act to prevent anticompet

Consumer laws and Consumer lawyers in India
Consumer rights are the rights given to a consumer to protect him/her from being cheated by salesman/manufacturer. Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure fair trade competition and the free flow of truthful information in the marketplace.
The laws are designed to prevent businesses that engage in fraud or specified unfair practices from gaining an advantage over competitors and may provide additional protection for the weak and those unable to take care of themselves. Consumer Protection laws are a form of government regulation which aim to protect the rights of consumers.
For example, a government may require businesses to disclose detailed information about products particularly in areas where safety or public health is an issue, such as food. Consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights (that consumers have various rights as consumers), and to the formation of consumer organizations which

#Anti-piracy site-blocking laws: what you need to know
Tim Biggs
Piracy websites will soon be blocked in Australia.
In a nutshell, the new anti-piracy laws which passed through the senate on Monday, are designed to make it more difficult for Australians to access websites that film, TV and music companies say are hosting their content without permission.
Once implemented, the federal government says the laws will protect the viability and success of creative industries while restricting the profitability of sites that facilitate piracy.
Australians love creative content, government frontbencher Concetta Fierravanti-Wells told the Senate.

#Antitrust Laws And You
Many consumers have never heard of antitrust laws, but enforcement of these laws saves consumers millions and even billions of dollars a year. The Federal Government enforces three major Federal antitrust laws, and most states also have their own. Essentially, these laws prohibit business practices that unreasonably deprive consumers of the benefits of competition, resulting in higher prices for products and services.
The three major Federal antitrust laws are:
- The Sherman Antitrust Act
- The Clayton Act
- The Federal Trade Commission Act.
The following information on these laws comes from the Antitrust Enforcement and the Consumer guide.
The Sherman Antitrust Act
This Act outlaws all contracts, combinations, and conspiracies that unreasonably restrain interstate and foreign trade. This includes agreements among competitors to fix prices, rig bids, and allocate customers, which are puni

Copyright law in the U.S. is governed by federal statute, namely the Copyright Act of 1976. The Copyright Act prevents the unauthorized copying of a work of authorship. However, only the copying of the work is prohibited--anyone may copy the ideas contained within a work. For example, a copyright could cover a written description of a machine, but the actual machine itself is not covered. Thus, no one could copy the written description, while anyone could use the description to build the described machine.
Copyrights can be registered in the Copyright Office in the Library of Congress, but newly created works do not need to be registered. In fact, it is no longer necessary to even place a copyright notice on a work for it to be protected by copyright law. However, the Copyright Act does provide additional benefits to those who register with the Copyright Office. Consequently, copyright registration and the use of a copyright notice is recommended.
In addition to these d

#Arkansas and Indiana pass changes to religious laws - BBC News
Governor Asa Hutchinson signed a reworked bill
Arkansas and Indiana have passed laws to quell the outcry over new "religious freedom" legislation that critics say encourages anti-gay discrimination.
Republican Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson signed a revised version of his religious objections bill that he hopes addresses these concerns.
The amendments mean his state's law more closely mirrors what Bill Clinton signed into federal law in 1993.
Indiana also approved law changes which were signed off by its governor.
The Indiana amendment prohibits businesses from using the law as a legal defence if they refuse to provide services to gays and lesbians, or other groups.
The change does not apply to churches, religious schools, or non-profit religious organisations.
It also prohibits discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, religion, age, disability, national

#Are There Any Rankings for Online Law Schools? Top Law Schools
Rankings of Online Law Schools
The Internet has revolutionized many aspects of our society and there are now several online law schools offering degrees out there. However, law is inherently a conservative arena, for in law present decisions are determined by examining past decisions that set a precedent. Along these lines, online law schools are still stigmatized and are not yet ranked by any law school ranking.
Personally, I like the idea of online law schools and am open to the concept. However, the reality of online law schools is that at present their graduates fare poorly in the job market as online law schools are not yet considered the equal of even marginal brick and mortar law schools.
Until online law schools become more prestigious, I would focus upon the traditional ABA approved law schools. That being said, if you are in California, which does not require that you attend an ABA a

#Are Law Firm Websites Evolving Or Dying?

#Arizona’s bad immigration law takes effect - The Washington Post
By Editorial Board September 20, 2012
AFTER A TWO-YEAR struggle, a federal judge this week authorized Arizona law enforcement agencies to require officers to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the country illegally. Wearing the wrong clothes, speaking with the wrong accent or having the wrong skin color could land you in hot water in Arizona.
The state’s “show me your papers” provision — one of the most bitterly contested parts of the obnoxious immigration law enacted in 2010 — is the second such measure to receive a green light from federal courts. The first was from Alabama, where a similar policy was implemented about a year ago.
There, according to a recent report by the National Immigration Law Center, an immigrant advocacy group, law enforcement officers have created an “environment of racial profiling” that has encouraged private citizens to discriminate and abuse

#Arizona immigration law dismantled by Supreme Court
By Jacques Billeaud, The Associated Press
Posted: 06/01/15, 5:13 PM PDT | Updated: on 06/01/2015
PHOENIX The U.S. Supreme Court landed the final blow against an Arizona law that denied bail to immigrants who are in the country illegally and are charged with certain felonies, marking the latest in a series of state immigration policies that have since been thrown out by the courts.
The nation s highest court on Monday rejected a bid from metro Phoenix s top prosecutor and sheriff to reinstate the 2006 law after a lower appeals court concluded late last year that it violated civil rights by imposing punishment before trial.
While a small number of Arizona s immigration laws have been upheld, the courts have slowly dismantled most of the other statutes that sought to draw local police into immigration enforcement.
At this point, we can say that was a failed experiment, said Cecillia Wang, an

Our list of affordable law schools includes schools with a solid reputation which also provide affordable tuition costs.
If you’re considering going to law school, it goes without saying you’ll want to assess a law school’s reputation, success rate of graduates passing the bar exam and other factors of overall quality. Moreover, these days, with a challenging economy and rising tuition expenses, you’ll also want to look at the tuition costs and the affordability of a particular school.
One way to manage the expenses of a law degree is to consider in-state law schools. However, some law schools offer reasonable out-of-state tuitions. While it may not be your first choice among all law schools, ideally, you should aim to select a school which offers both a stalwart reputation and affordability.
With a predilection to costs, this list highlights ten affordable law schools with sensibly priced in-state and out-of-state tuition rates and solid national standings.<

#Assessing the Impact of - Three Strikes - Laws on Crime Rates and Prison Populations in California and Washington - Student Pulse
Abstract
The efficacy of three strikes laws has been a topic of contention among researchers since the first such piece of legislation was implemented in the United States nearly two decades ago. With the benefit of hindsight, it is possible to trend their impact through longitudinal analysis. This paper assesses the impact of three strikes legislation in California and Washington; two states which have implemented uniquely divergent forms of mandatory sentencing. It addresses the effect of three strikes law on crime trends and prison populations therein. Results indicated that mandatory sentencing was associated with declines in some areas of crime. However, the decline observed nationally was not proportional to the scope of variations in three strikes laws and the impact on correction institutions has been minimal. This popular legislative

#Arizona-Style Immigration Laws Hurt the Economy

With the “papers please” portion of Arizona’s recent immigration law SB 1070 going into effect, civil rights and watchdog groups are in overdrive readying for the litany of purported abuses and complaints. Lydia Guzman, president of Respect Respeto. a civil rights group in Arizona that records abuses at the hands of police, said, “Our hotline has been receiving hundreds of calls a day since the law was implemented.”
Forcibly removing peaceful unauthorized immigrants from the U.S. separating them from their families, property, and jobs, to satisfy arcane labor market regulations created by Progressive politicians, is an appalling indecency. It also inflicts significant economic harm. Arizona’s immigration laws have drastically damaged its economy since mid-2007. #What is the law of Christ?
Question: What is the law of Christ?
Answer: Galatians 6:2 states, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ ” (emphasis added). What exactly is the law of Christ, and how is it fulfilled by carrying each other’s burdens? While the law of Christ is also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 9:21, the Bible nowhere specifically defines what precisely is the law of Christ. However, most Bible teachers understand the law of Christ to be what Christ stated were the greatest commandments in Mark 12:28 31, “‘Which commandment is the most important of all?’ Jesus answered, ‘The most important is, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no other commandment great

Physicists will tell you that the laws of physics aim to describe the world around us so that mathematicians and other physicists can understand what is going on. Physicists, for better or worse, tend not to talk in terms of hosts of golden daffodils fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Instead they use shorthand phrases like, "force is equivalent to the product of mass and acceleration .” Or more likely, perhaps, "F equal M-A.”
Describing the world of physical laws
So when a physicist says the laws of physics describe the world around us, it's true, but only up to a point. The description afforded by these laws is extremely limited. The laws of physics describe a bare minimalist world, devoid of irrelevant detail and populated with a panoply of simplifying assumptions.
The laws of physics do not cover love or life. The laws of physics steadfastly avoid truth, beauty and charm.

Aviation law is the branch of law that governs the legalities and business aspects of flight and air transport, such as air traffic rights, aviation safety and security, economic regulations of airlines, and the operation of airports.
It is one of the most complex branches of law. This is due to a number of factors, including: the globalization of aviation, the numerous countries involved, commercial and business competition, and overlapping requirements.

If Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, were alive today, even he might be surprised by the sheer number and tenacity of politically savvy dog owners and animal welfare organizations.
During hearings on controversial local and state bills, legions of canine enthusiasts pack rooms to voice their support or opposition. In July 2007, animal advocates began lining up outside California s Capitol nearly two hours before a senate committee hearing on a statewide mandatory spay-neuter bill. Hundreds of people attended a hearing in Boston earlier this year when lawmakers decided to explore the idea of a statewide ban on pit bull-type dogs.
The reason for the intense interest and passionate debate is simple: Dogs have captured our hearts — so much, that 45 million U.S. households choose to share their lives with some 65 to 80 million dogs. But society s view of dogs often differs from how the legal system sees them. Under the

#Australian senate passes controversial anti-piracy, website-blocking laws
Ben Grubb
Piracy websites will soon be blocked in Australia.
In the eyes of at least one intellectual property academic, the passing of controversial anti-piracy website-blocking legislation in the senate on Monday night represented a very dark day for the internet in Australia .
But for the film and TV industry, which has been battling online piracy at record levels, it was a watershed moment. Finally they could seek a remedy in the courts to block access to sites offering their content for free.
The Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill 2015, introduced into parliament by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull in March to curb online piracy of film and TV shows, passed with the Coalition and Labor's support 37-13.

In the United States, the professional doctorate in law may be conferred in Latin or in English, as Juris Doctor (JD or J.D.) or Doctor of Jurisprudence (DJur or D.Jur.), respectively. "Juris Doctor" literally means "Teacher of Law", while the Latin for "Doctor of Jurisprudence"—Jurisprudentia Doctor —literally means "Teacher of Legal Knowledge".
Invariably an earned doctorate, the J.D./D.Jur. is equivalent in academic rank to the Doctor of Laws or Legum Doctor (LLD or LL.D.). However, while the LL.D. remains an earned doctorate in Ireland and many Commonwealth countries, it is invariably an honorary degree in the United States. [ 15 ] [ 16 ]

Title 2 is designed to prevent health care abuse and fraud by defining offenses and setting penalties for them.
The first part of the law was designed to ease a problem known as "job lock" the reluctance to move from one company to another for fear of losing health insurance. (Another federal law called COBRA helps you buy health insurance benefits if you lose a job. Know your COBRA rights .)
