Introduction

Arizona State University (ASU) has been offering post-secondary education to its student community since 1885. ASU’s graduate business school, the W.P. Carey School of Business, is consistently ranked as one of the top business schools, recently being named by the U.S. News World Report online honor roll. ASU s professional MBA program went fully online in 2003.

What separates the Carey online professional MBA from other programs is its one-class-at-a-time structure. Students are enrolled in cohort-style group and move through the program in lock-step, taking one course, six-weeks at a time. There is one on-campus requirement for the two-year, 48-credit program at the beginning of the program for an on-site orientation in Tempe.

Accreditation

Since 1931, ASU has been regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission. This accrediting agency was founded in 1895 as one of the six accreditors in the U.S. and it is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable authority on distance education quality. The Carey School is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a distinction given to only about 5% of the world’s business schools.

Academics

The school offers the four online MBA degrees concentrations:

  • Master of Business Administration: Emphasis in Finance
  • Master of Business Administration: Emphasis in International Business
  • Master of Business Administration: Emphasis in Marketing
  • Master of Business Administration: Emphasis in Supply Chain Management

Each area of emphasis requires nine credit hours of associated classes and gives students the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a particular area of interest. The area of emphasis courses are available as electives in the second year of the online program.

Students must declare their intention to pursue an optional area of emphasis no later than the conclusion of they fourth course in the program. A general management curriculum can be created by selecting elective online MBA classes from multiple disciplines.

Carey also offers a dual degree with the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. Offered online, the MBA/MSE and the MBA/MS in industrial engineering dual degrees require 56 credit hours of study over three years, including eight courses from the MBA program and eight courses from the MSE or MS program. The MBA/MSE electrical engineering degree is designed for working professionals who have an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and at least one year of work experience. The online program allows students to choose from six focused electrical engineering tracks. The MBA/MS in industrial engineering degree is designed for working professionals who have an undergraduate degree in engineering, science or mathematics and at least one year of work experience. Dual degrees are only available to students beginning the online program in July.

Admission

The online application consists of two parts. Students will be asked for the following information during the application process:

  • Online application
  • Transcripts and GPAs
  • GMAT/TOEFL. The average score for a student in the online professional MBA program is 570.
  • Desired program information
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Resume and work experience. The average number of years of work experience for a student in the online professional MBA program is six years. Students must have between 2-3 years to be considered for the program.
  • Essay questions

There is a domestic $70 application fee (or an $90 fee for international applications).

The school also provides a detailed checklist for potential students

Tuition and Financial Aid

The online MBA program base tuition is approximately $53,900, costing $1,123 per credit hour, according to the school’s 2012-13 school year tuition calendar.

ASU participates in a variety of student loan programs from federal and private sources that must be repaid. Federal loan programs are options for U.S. citizens and legal residents. Private education loan programs are options for all applicants, including international students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the Financial Aid Data forms are required to determine eligibility.
