Monthly weekend residencies (Thursday-Saturday) and four weeklong leadership residencies, including one outside the U.S. The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who considered it one of his greatest achievements. When it opened for the first classes in 1825, a mere 68 students were enrolled under the educational tutelage of only eight faculty members. The school has grown exponentially since then; more than 2,130 faculty members are employed full-time to instruct over 15,500 enrolled students. To allow working professionals the same opportunity to achieve their academic goals and further their careers, the University of Virginia has provided two specialized degree programs through the Darden School of Business: the Executive MBA and Global Executive MBA. The majority of the course work for these degree programs is offered entirely online, with a few weeks of residency requirements to finish the program. This allows working professionals to continue their education while still working full-time. AccreditationThe University of Virginia is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (COC, SACS) to award their bachelor s degrees and has received specialized accreditation for their school of business degrees by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB International). AcademicsDesigned for experienced managers seeking the opportunity to develop their leadership and business and gain higher career levels, the MBA for Executives caters to the flexibility requirements of a full-time employee while still providing the same education as the full-time MBA. Through the case method of instruction, which involves interactive discussions capitalizing on the perspectives and experiences of the class participants, students gain a valuable understanding of the concepts of upper-level management. The course requires campus attendance about once a month to effectively deliver a complete understanding of the program content. In the 21 month program, students will be required to attend four weeklong leadership residencies as well to provide new perspectives on the management challenges of the everyday business world. Darden s Global MBA for Executives (GEMBA) was created to deliver a high-quality education to experienced managers seeking to further their international career. Also only 21 months long and requiring limited residencies, the majority of this program can be completed entirely online. The program emphasizes global preparation in managing business in an international setting – often dealing with multiple countries. Given the diversity among globally distributed firms, across markets, cultures, and in emerging regions, it is imperative that business executives be prepared to handle the challenges that come their way. This program requires six, two-week international residencies to locations such as Brazil, China, India, and Europe. In each destination, students will attend case method classes, collect valuable cultural information, knowledge, and experience, visit some of the top influential firms, and gain contacts as they work across international borders. Students also work with each other on group projects and learning team meetings, by themselves on individual assignments, and meet one-on-one with the faculty during their program. AdmissionTo be considered for admission to the Executive MBA program at the University of Virginia, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Admission requirements for the Global Executive MBA are similar:
Tuition and Financial AidThe total cost of tuition and fees for the Global MBA for Executives program is $134,900. The cost of the Executive MBA program is $124,900. Graduate students can apply for financial aid by completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which determines eligibility and award amount they could potentially receive. A limited number of scholarships are awarded to graduate level students each year and applicants are encouraged to submit their application documents well in advance of the award date. In addition to these forms of financial aid, students can apply for federal and personal loans to help break up the cost of tuition into smaller, more manageable increments. School ResourcesThe University of Virginia provides a few valuable resources for students enrolled in the hybrid programs through their library system. The study area in the library is open 94 hours a week with extended hours during exam week, providing a quiet area for concentration and research. Several dozen computer workstations are available – some even with dual monitors – and wireless is provided throughout the entire library. Subscription access to over 120 research databases can be accessed on-campus and off-campus for students research. Vault, WetFeet and Going Global are accessible (even remotely) through the Library portal page for students to gain background information on occupations, industries, and companies. The library also provides access to over 800 business journals and magazines and 8 daily newspapers on-site and many of those are available online. If students need additional assistance, the library reference staff are available to help advise research strategies and provide database instruction.
