The distance online MBA is a part-time MBA format, and one that is largely undertaken by students who wish to remain in their current role while they study. Employer-funded candidates will make up a certain proportion of each class. However, the majority of students will be self-funded candidates who have taken the initiative to pursue an MBA, but who cannot afford to forego their salary or to relocate – or simply do not wish to.

Yet, this is where the real appeal of an MBA online becomes apparent. While traditionally, a part-time MBA candidate would be limited to schools in their local area, they can now choose to study at any one of a solid selection of highly-respected international business schools, enjoying the benefits of the school’s network, access to world-class faculty and – of course – the ability to put a prestigious, globally-recognized school on their resume.

Technological advances have, of course, allowed for great progress and innovat ... Read more »

Industrial relations laws in Canada oversee collective bargaining between workers and bosses. Canadian law provides for two basic freedoms for Canadians in the workplace. The first is that employees may join the union of their choosing and engage in any lawful activities associated with that union. The second freedom involves employers, who may also join any employers organization and engage in its lawful activities.

Canada has an Industrial Relations Board that mediates industrial disputes. Members of this board may not receive payment for any other employment. Members are appointed by the Governor in Council. The board must consist of equal numbers of representatives of labor and capital.

The Canada Labour Code includes provisions that protect the health and safety of workers on the job. The bedrock of Canadian health and safety law are three fundamental rights. First, employees have the right to refuse to perform dangerous tasks at work, without fear of reprisal i ... Read more »

A migrant family from the South seeks a better life in Mexico.

Photo: Luis J. Jimenez/The New York Times

The chorus of critics of Arizona's new law targeting suspected illegal immigrants has been joined by an unlikely voice. It belongs to Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who has blasted the Arizona law as opening the door "to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement."

Just one problem with Calderon's holier-than-thou posturing. His own country's Reglamento de la Ley General de Poblacion General Law on Population, which was enacted in April 2000 is quite similar to the Arizona law, with one important difference. It is far stricter and the penalties for violating it far more draconian.

Under the Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The penalty includes up to two years in prison. That jail time

is upped to 10 years for repeat offenders. Visa violators can be sentenced to prison terms of 6 years, and any Mexican wh ... Read more »

Types of Legal Practice

The practice of law takes several forms. The ways in which lawyers apply their expertise can be broadly categorized into the following practice types:

  • Private Practice: involves working alone or with partners in a firm to provide legal services to clients (individuals or corporations); some lawyers specialize in one or more practice areas while others engage in general practice.
  • Public Interest Law: serves low-income individuals, marginalized groups and social causes; practitioners may work for advocacy groups, legal aid clinics and other organizations with the goal of advancing an interest of the public.
  • Government Counsel: governments hire lawyers for legal advice and representation; lawyers directly employed by the government may work for ministries, government agencies and crown corporations.
  • Corporate Counsel: corporati ... Read more »

The majority of law schools require a bachelor's degree for admission, but you don't need any particular major. You can take a traditional pre-law major, such as English or history, or study whatever interests you, such as music or engineering, according to the American Bar Association. Undergraduate classes that will help you in law school include English, speech, economics, government and philosophy. Most law school admissions offices also require scores on the Law School Admission Test .

A doctorate in law doesn't immediate qualify you to represent clients. Every state requires law school graduates to pass bar exams before they can practice law. The requirements vary, but many states require two-day written exams, with follow-up oral testing of those who pass. During the oral exams, you must show your competence and demonstrate the character needed for a lawyer. If you move to a different state, in many cases you must pas ... Read more »

Los Angeles is suing to shut down a mobile phone application that arranges medical marijuana home deliveries.

In law, a lawsuit is a civil action brought before a court in which a party (plaintiff) has claimed to have received damages from a defendant's actions, the plaintiff, seeks a legal or equitable remedy. The defendants are required to respond to the complaint of the plaintiff. If the plaintiff is successful, judgment will be given in the plaintiff's favor, and a range of court orders may be issued to enforce a right, award damages, or impose an injunction to prevent an act or compel an act. A declaratory judgment may be issued to prevent future legal disputes.

A lawsuit may involve dispute resolution of private law issues between individuals, business entities or non-profit organizations. A lawsuit may also enable the government to be treated as if it were a private party in a civil case, as plaintiff or defendant regarding an injury, or may provide the ... Read more »

Pearl, Oisin and Tatiana on graduation day

Welcome to the Law subject page at King s! Here you will find an overview of the subject in the University and the College, the people who teach and research Law at King s, and what will happen when you apply.

    What is Law?

The word law usually conjures up either a graphic snapshot of the more sensational murders, rapes and other violent crimes that grace the pages of the tabloid press, or the depressing image of balding, middle-aged, grey men in pin-striped City suits worrying about the placing of a comma. Neither picture is wholly wrong, but both are inadequate.

Law is indeed about drama, conflict, the individual and society. It is also about rigorous logic, care and precision, clarity of thought and attention to detail. Law is not an easy ticket to being a fat cat . It can be an absorbing, passionate and very satisfying way of spending a working life.

    Increased Earnings with an MBA

Many people enroll in an Masters in Business Administration program with the hope of earning more money after graduation.

Although there is no guarantee that you will make more money with an MBA, a higher salary is likely. However, the exact amount you earn is very dependent on the job you do and the business school you graduate from.

Matt Shinner of the website All Things LSAT recommends doing your research. You need to convince them that they re at the top of your list, Shinner says. Find out what particular programs or clinics they offer and how that fits in with your interests. Research professors at the law school and their areas of expertise. Are there any famous alumni who you admire? That could also be a great indication to the interviewers that you've done your research. You should know these things so that you can drop them casually into your answers, says Shinner.

Interviews shouldn t be a one-way conversation in which the interviewer is the only one asking the questions. You should also be asking questions to evaluate whether the law school is a good fit for you. Ask about the law school. Ask about student life. Ask about what the administration has done to help with the notorious competitive aspect of law school, Shinner advises. Take this opportunity to get a feel for the school. As Shinner ... The legislature revised and updated the law in

Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law is not affected by yesterday’s state Supreme Court decision in Commonwealth v. Neiman, Reps. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin County) and Tom Caltagirone (D-Berks County), the majority and minority chairmen of the House Judiciary Committee, said today.  Joining them was David Freed, Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association (PDAA) president.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that a prior version of Megan’s Law was unconstitutional because its enactment violated the single subject rule.

In order to comply with new federal requirements, the Legislature worked with PDAA, Pennsylvania State Police and Juvenile Court Judges Commission in to modernize Megan’s Law.  Indeed, that legislation replaced the law that was before the court.

Stripped of the necessity of an enforcement agency (government), the term law has been defined, simply, as:

“. a mechanism for facilitating and regulating interaction between autonomous entities." 1

In The Science of Law (1885) British jurist Sheldon Amos wrote:

"A law is. a command proceeding from the supreme political authority of a state, and addressed to the persons who are subjects of that authority."

"A rule of. conduct prescribed by the supreme power in a state, commanding what is right and prohibiting what is wrong."

In Louisiana, as in most states in the U.S. child support ends automatically when children are grown up. Each state has its own age of majority and its own exceptions when support can terminate before the majority of the child or when support obligations can continue beyond the majority. In Louisiana, when child support orders cover more than one child in the award, the non-custodial parent has to go to court to get an adjustment to the order when the older children are no longer entitled to support. The change will not happen automatically.

Under Louisiana Code section 315.22 the duty to pay child support terminates automatically when the minor child reaches the age of majority if the support award is for only one child. If the support award covers more than one child in a single order, the duty to pay the support does not automatically terminate until the youngest child covered by the support order reaches the age of majority. In Louisiana, the age of majority is 18 years. ... Read more »

If you take property from a Florida merchant or retail store without paying for it, you can be arrested for shoplifting -- technically called petit theft in Florida under the state law that defines theft, robbery and related crimes. Although shoplifting a candy bar or comic book might seem like a relatively trivial youthful indiscretion, the consequences of a shoplifting conviction can be severe.

Petit theft, the Florida term describing shoplifting, is known in other states as petty theft, petty larceny, 4th-degree theft or plain old shoplifting. Florida law defines petit theft as taking or attempting to take property from a merchant or store, an act that prevents or attempts to prevent the rightful owner from selling the property to a paying customer.

Ministers say extending the age range will give authorities the flexibility to provide better protection for communities and young people.

The new law also allows the police, as well as local authorities, to make curfew applications.

Local child curfew orders were first introduced in the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

As well as individuals, local curfew orders can be sought for trouble spots known to be centres of anti-social behaviour or dangerous for children.

But ministers decided that changes were needed after it emerged that no local authority had applied for an order, more than a year after the law appeared on the statute books.

Home Office minister, Beverley Hughes, said the new measures would help to protect communities and to prevent young people from taking part in criminal activities.

"Groups of young people involved in anti-social behaviour can cause fear and distress in local communities," she said.

East Lansing voters on Tuesday approved a municipal ballot measure removing criminal and civil penalties for minor marijuana offenses. East Lansing is the seventeenth Michigan city to approve a municipal ballot initiative depenalizing marijuana related activities.

Puerto Rican Gov. Alejandro J. Garcia Padilla signed an executive order on Sunday to allow for the therapeutic use of cannabis and cannabinoids in the US territory. The Governor acknowledged that several US states have already legalized the plant for therapeutic purposes and that Puerto Rican patients would similarly benefit from a change in law.

The gateway theory is still hanging around after all these years. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, in one of his many ill-informed public statements, recently proclaimed that were he elected president in 2016, he would “crack down and not permit” states to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes, calling tax revenue from marijuana “blood money . The biggest change anyone will notice about the rankings are the number of ties (there are even 6-way ties!). US News changed its methodology in calculating post-law school employment – it gave fewer points for schools that employed their own graduates, as opposed to law graduates who went on to the public and private sector.  (Note: these jobs are still factored in but count less than jobs where students stayed at least a year or more.) As you look at the rankings, it’s worth taking particular note of post-graduation employme ... Read more »

Admission to most law schools is competitive. The typical law school admits fewer than half of all applicants.

It typically takes three years of full time study to complete a law degree. Some law schools offer evening and weekend classes on a part-time basis.
