Some law schools, such as the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan, ask you to write a short statement (in addition to a personal statement) detailing why you wish to attend their school. You should consider this a question you need to answer in all of your applications. It is harder than ever to be accepted to law school, and tailoring each application has become the practice of the most serious candidates. Tailoring your statement helps you connect with the people reading your application. It demonstrates that you want to be part of their program specifically. If you send the same statement to eight schools, you are sending the message that they have to want you and be willing to fight for you. The committee will be more willing to risk accepting you if they think you really want them and that you will be truly thrilled to go there. The committee wants you to give them specific reasons for why you two are a good match. You

#Bans on Sharia and International Law
In a disturbing trend, anti-Muslim bigotry has recently crept into state legislatures around the country. Several states have passed or attempted to pass laws designed to prevent courts from applying Islamic or “Sharia” law, as well as “foreign” or “international law.” Some, such as a constitutional amendment passed in Oklahoma, mention Sharia specifically, in addition to international law. Others only mention foreign or international law. Whatever the specific terminology, all of these attempts raise serious red flags.
Efforts to single out Muslims and to advance the ugly idea that anything Islamic is un-American are unjust and discriminatory and should be rejected. Laws that single out Sharia violate the First Amendment by treating one belief system as suspect. Attempts to prevent courts from considering international or foreign law suffer from constitutional flaws and undermine the ability of courts to interpret laws and treaties r

Although every lawyer has his or her own unique way of doing things, most law offices share a surprising number of similar characteristics in terms of how they do business. Understanding some of them will help you to get more effective legal representation.
Law offices range in size from sole practitioners to firms with literally hundreds or even thousands of lawyers. While all of them charge for their time in one form or another, there are some practical distinctions to keep in mind that can roughly be broken down by the following categories:
Sole Practitioners. Once a lawyer has passed the bar exam, it does not take much more to start his or her own practice other than renting office space and hanging up a shingle. Thus, it is not surprising that law offices of sole practitioners are probably the biggest single category of practicing lawyers. Sole practitioners can be excellent lawyers and so you may want to consider retaining one if it makes sense, give

What is Traffic Violation Law?
Traffic violation law covers any number of unlawful activities involving a motor vehicle. These laws deal with moving violations like drunk driving and speeding, as well as violations based on the condition or status of a vehicle, such as expired registration. State and local governments have enacted comprehensive motor vehicle codes setting forth the traffic laws in that jurisdiction. In some states, the department of motor vehicles assesses ?points? against a driver based on the number of infractions in a given period of time. Too many points can result in an increase in insurance premiums, as well as suspension or revocation of driving privileges.
The agency in charge of enforcing a particular traffic rule will depend on the location of the traffic stop. Each local law enforcement agency has authority to issue citations in a certain geographical area, though these areas can overlap. For example, a person driving on a highway r

In an ideal society, all current UCC Maritime laws would be replaced with the 20 Universal Laws:
This law supersedes even the fundamental law of Karma, for harmony is the supreme potential of balance.
The purpose of Karma is to attain harmony.
If you throw a rock into a pond you disturb the harmony of the pond, you are the cause, the effect is the splash and the ripples that flows out and back until harmony is restored.
Similarly, your disharmonious actions flow out into the Universe and back upon you, lifetime after life time, until eventually your own harmony is restored.
Until you have resolved your Karma and fulfilled your Dharma, which are the deeds you must do, you will continue to reincarnate into sequential lifetime upon the earth. Neither God nor the Lords of Karma bestow suffering upon you during these lives, you and you alone decide what you most need to learn and in your earthly sojourns, and for each life experience you seek out o

#Best Executive MBA Programs: The Wall Street Journal - s 2010 Rankings
Wharton and Olin come out on top as more students look to change careers, not just get a promotion
Last year, Takashi Yoshizaki was halfway through his executive M.B.A. studies at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business when his employer announced it would file for bankruptcy.
This could have been a worrisome development, to say the least, since he was personally committed to pay the $150,000 in tuition. But Mr. Yoshizaki, 37 years old, quickly negotiated a new position with one of the companies buying out his firm. And paying his tuition himself, he says, helped maximize his bargaining power.
The Journal Report
As Mr. Yoshizaki's experience suggests, the journey of the typical E.M.B.A. student has grown more complicated since The Wall Street Journal's first ranking of executive M.B.A. programs in 2008. E.M.B.A. programs cater to students already in the ma

A work stoppage; the concerted refusal of employees to perform work that their employer has assigned to them in order to force the employer to grant certain demanded concessions, such as increased wages or improved employment conditions.
A work stoppage is generally the last step in a labor-management dispute over wages and working conditions. Because employees are not paid when they go on strike and employers lose productivity, both sides usually seek to avoid it. When negotiations have reached an impasse, however, a strike may be the only bargaining tool left for employees.
Employees can strike for economic reasons, for improvement of their working conditions, or for the mutual aid and protection of employees in another union. In addition, even if they do not have a union, employees can properly agree to stop working as a group; in that case they are entitled to all the protections that organized strikers a

Cohabitation has been around for much longer than the institution of marriage .
In fact, but not in law, the only difference was that marriage was a formal event and status, whereas cohabitation does not have nice, fancy legal goal-posts.
It wasn't always that way. The early common law did recognize, as marriage no less, a consensual relationship between husband and wife, without any formal ceremony, provided the relationship had been consummated. Hence the term common law marriage. But now, almost every jurisdictions tightly controls marriage, and the many advantages that go with it, by imposing formal conditions: age limits, ceremony, oath etc.
When does cohabitation start?
There is no set number of occurrences of sex that constitute cohabitation.
What about moving in with one another but with abstinence of sex?
With so much uncertainty, the common law s most recent position on cohabitation has been to ignore it entirely. Once statut

The universities answer to questions from business for a precise and profound qualification for the future and modern managers based on a standardized title. MBA is a program designed for students who want to further their academic skills and apply them to actual real-life business situations. It guides students to reflect and reposition themselves in terms of choosing their future careers. #Blue Laws legal definition of Blue Laws
Blue Laws
A state or local law that prohibits commercial activities on Sunday. Blue laws have been part of U.S. Legal History since the colonial period. These laws, which today are usually referred to as Sunday closing laws, prohibit certain types of commercial activity on Sundays. Originally these laws were directed at personal activities regarded as moral offenses, such as gambling or the consumption of alcohol. In the nineteenth century, however, state and local governments passed laws that forbade businesses from operating on Sunday. Although these laws were clearly based on Christian beliefs, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that they do not violate the First Amendment's Establishment Clause. Many blue laws have been repealed since the 1960s, but some laws that ban the sale of alcohol on Sunday remain in force.
In 1781, the Reverend Samuel Peters published A General History of Connecticut. in which he use

Under House Bill 147 . introduced this week, anyone aged 21 or older in Ohio would be able to carry any concealed firearm not specifically banned by law.
It would also prohibit law enforcement officers from searching or detaining people just because they are carrying a legal gun, and landlords couldn't stop tenants from carrying or possessing a firearm.
Many cleveland.com commenters said they favored expanding gun rights in the state. Opponents, meanwhile, feared what would happen if training and permits were no longer required to carry a con

#Bills and Laws Home
An idea for a law can come from anyone - an individual, consumer group, professional association government agency, a legislator, or the Governor.
A bill, the most common type of measure, is a proposal for a law. The path of a bill, from the time it s an idea to the time it arrives at the Governor s desk for approval, may follow a path with many detours. A bill may be introduced in either the Senate or the House with the exception of revenue bills which must originate in the House. The following is an example of how an idea becomes law.
Steps of How an Idea Becomes Law
This example uses the House of Representative as the Bill s chamber of origin.
- An idea to change, amend or create a new law is presented to a Legislative Member.
- The Member decides to sponsor the bill and introduce it to their respective chamber, and requests that the attorneys in the Legislative Counsel s office draft the bill in t

The first legal step in adoption is the termination of the parental rights of a child's birthparents. The final step is the finalization of adoption in court, making you your child's permanent, legal parents. Along the way, there are many points where adoption laws will have an effect on your child's adoption.
Termination of Parental Rights (TPR)
This is a legal process involving a court hearing during which a judge issues a decree that permanently ends all legal parental rights of a birth parent to a child. This must occur before a child is considered to be legally free for adoption. Termination of parental rights can be voluntary or involuntary, that is, with or without the birthparents' agreement. In some states, there is a period during which the birthparent may appeal, if rights have been terminated without his or her consent. The length of that period varies from state to state.
Legal risk is a term used to describe a potential adoption

#Black s Law Dictionary is a Hoax and there is no such thing as capitus diminutio, page 1
posted on Jun, 15 2008 @ 02:35 AM
Why Black's Law Dictionary is a Hoax
I have bee doing a lot of research into the whole capitus diminutio maxima thing. Supposedly what capitus diminutio maxima means is that your name appearing in all capitol letters (JOHN DOE) on any legal documents are not actually representing you, but are representing a corporate entity of you. This means you have surrendered your rights and have gone from freedom to bondage. Sounds fishy to me.
Now the reason I was looking into this was because I had to appear in court last week, and naturally, if this was true, I would want to take full advantage of it. So I met my lawyer in court, a man named Gary Porter, and asked him about capitus diminutio and explained to him what it was. He told me that he'd never heard of it before and that it was absolute baloney. Now this lawyer is no

tomorrow, the people of the uk go to the polls to vote in our general election. our electoral system is kind of weird and complex, and there are a lot of acronyms thrown around that never get explained, so i thought it might help to do a post to give people the lowdown on what s happening.

#Blog Law Blog
Jennifer Murphy Romig on Legal Blogging
Here is the abstract:
This article brings scholarly attention to the blog posts, tweets, updates and other writing on social media that many lawyers generate and many others would consider generating, if they had the time and skill to do so. In the broadest terms, this genre of writing is “public legal writing”: writing by lawyers not for any specific client but for dissemination to the public or through wide distribution channels, particularly the Internet. Legal blogging is a good entry point into public legal writing because legalblog posts often share some analytical features of longer articles alongside conversational conventions typical of writing on social media. Legal blogging is certainly not new, but this article brings new attention to it.
The article begins by reviewing helpful (non-legal) advice from two recent writing guidebooks, Christopher Johnson’s Microstyle: The Art of Writing Little

#Blacks in the US are killed by law enforcement at three times the rate of whites
Written by
This post originally appeared at the Sunlight Foundation .
When a police officer kills someone while trying to stop a crime or make an arrest, government agencies classify the death as a legal intervention. The death of Mike Brown. the 18-year-old and unarmed teenager killed by a police officer earlier this month in Ferguson, Missouri will likely be classified under this term when it comes time to report the circumstances of his death to the national databases that track such information.
For many people, especially Mike Brown s family and friends, describing the loss of their loved one in such a dry, unemotional and even benign-sounding way, will be hard to swallow. But in an effort to get justice and respect for the life of Brown and perhaps to stop more incidents like the one in Ferguson, which has caused weeks of protests and police standoffs advocates

For a list of set rules, see Laws of science .
A physical law or scientific law is a scientific generalization based on empirical observations of physical behavior (i.e. the law of nature [ 1 ] ). Laws of nature are observable. Scientific laws are empirical, describing the observable laws. Empirical laws are typically conclusions based on repeated scientific experiments and simple observations, over many years, and which have become accepted universally within the scientific community. The production of a summary description of our environment in the form of such laws is a fundamental aim of science. These terms are not used the same way by all authors. Some philosophers e.g. Norman Swartz uses "physical law" to mean what other means by "natural law"/"law of nature". [ 2 ]
Several general properties of physical laws have been identified (see Davies (1992) and Feynman (1965

Family law generally concerns domestic relations and family-related matters such as marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships, adoptions, paternity, guardianships, domestic abuse, surrogacy, child custody, child abduction, the dissolution of marriage and associated issues. Each state has its own set of family laws, and traveling across state borders can sometimes affect your rights and those of your family.
Contrary to popular belief, seeking the advice of a family law attorney does not necessarily mean that something is amiss in your family. A Massachusetts family law attorney can help negotiate prenuptial/premarital agreements for clients in anticipation of marriage or advise same-sex couples in Boston on relevant legal issues affecting their relationship. Introduction
Reflection in computing is the ability of a program to examine its own structure, particularly through types; it s a form of metaprogramming. It s also a great source of confusion.
In this article we attempt to clarify things by explaining how reflection works in Go. Each language s reflection model is different (and many languages don t support it at all), but this article is about Go, so for the rest of this article the word reflection should be taken to mean reflection in Go .
Types and interfaces
Because reflection builds on the type system, let s start with a refresher about types in Go.
Go is statically typed. Every variable has a static type, that is, exactly one type known and fixed at compile time: int. float32. *MyType. []byte. and so on. If we declare
then i has type int and j has type MyInt. The variables i and j have distinct static types and, although they have the same underlying type, they cannot be ass

#British Women s Emancipation since the Renaissance
The Custody of Infants Act 1839
In 1838 Caroline Norton began a campaign to get the law changed on the custody of children. Thomas Talfourd MP agreed to her request to introduce a Bill to allow non-adulterous mothers, to have custody of children under seven, with rights of access to older children. The Bill was passed in the House of Commons but was rejected by the House of Lords by just two votes.
Mrs Norton wrote another pamphlet, A Plain Letter to the Lord Chancellor on the Law of Custody of Infants. A copy was sent to every MP and in 1839 Thomas Talfourd tried again. This time the Bill was passed in both houses and gave mothers the right of custody of their children under seven, but only if the Lord Chancellor agreed to it, and only if she was of good character.
During the House of Commons debate on 14 December 1837, Mr Leader made an impassioned speech defending women. He said the law was 'peculiarly

#Car Repossession Laws.
Most people who own a car rely on it for getting virtually everywhere they need to go. That may include school, church, the store, or to pick up the kids; but for most, it primarily includes work. Thus, when you are late on your car payments, it may seem terribly ironic that the bank wants to deprive you of the means of getting to work to pay them back faster, but that is exactly what could happen.

These rights are established in both the lending documents signed at the time of purchase and in the laws of the state in which you live. Most commonly, when a buyer fails to make timely payments on a vehicle, the lender will have a contractual and statutory right to take possession of the vehicle without going to court or giving you advance warning. #Business Law.
What is Business Law?
Business law deals with the creation of new businesses and the issues that arise as existing businesses interact with the public, other companies, and the government. This area of the law draws on a variety of legal disciplines, including tax law, intellectual property, real estate, sales, employment law, bankruptcy, and others. Business law attorneys specialize in transactional work, meaning they do not represent clients in court. In fact, business lawyers are often hired for the purpose of avoiding future litigation.
To understand the role of business law within the legal system, it helps to view businesses as entities separate from their owners and employees. Just like individuals living together in society, business entities are subject to legal rules designed to give every participant in the marketplace a fair opportunity to succeed.
An enforceable system of business laws also benefits the economy as a whole a

Florida State University (College of Law)
According to U.S. News & World Report, one of the biggest complaints college students have about their educational experience is the lack of access to professors. At the Florida State University College of Law, we put a high priority on student and faculty interaction.
We believe our intimate, small law school atmosphere allows students to get the most out of their education.
This atmosphere fits with our philosophy of legal training, which places emphasis on a liberal arts orientation and professional skills. Our academic program reflects a big-picture approach to the study of law and relies on dynamic relationships between students and professors. We believe that it is important for our students to understand the history and philosophy of law as well as the economic, social and psychological influences on it. At the same time, it is important that students continue to develop the knowledge that they gained as
