About the Program

It is critical in today's ever-growing global marketplace to understand the legal complexities of food laws and regulations and how they impact the flow of food and agricultural products across national boundaries. The Global Food Law program at Michigan State University College of Law is an entirely online program designed to provide both attorneys and food industry professionals with the skills necessary to succeed in a dynamic global marketplace. Our unique curriculum helps facilitate communications between scientists, lawyers, and everyone in between. Our Master of Laws (LL.M.) and Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) degree programs in global food law are designed for lawyers and other professionals working in the food and agriculture industries, food safety, law, government, and other areas involving international food law. Through our LL.M. program, associate attorneys who are new to food law can quickly gain the background they need to research food law issues and can do so at a flexible pace with convenient hours. Seasoned attorneys can both refresh their knowledge on substantive law topics and receive up-to-date information on developments in global food law. Through our M.J. program, food industry professionals who do not have law degrees gain exposure to legal topics and an understanding of common legal and regulatory issues.

There is no question that food law is becoming increasingly globalized and, with implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act, increasingly complex. The challenges faced by those seeking to navigate the maze of global food laws cannot be understated. Our Global Food Law program consists of a flexible menu of courses taught by legal professionals and industry leaders. Students in the Global Food Law program benefit from the close alignment between the Law College and MSU s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, which co-sponsors an International Food Law Internet Certificate Program with the University s Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.
