#Teach Online

Southern New Hampshire University, the fastest-growing nonprofit university in the nation, is committed to academic rigor and student success. The instructors at the College of Online and Continuing Education (COCE) provide high-quality academic experiences and support students as they work toward their educational goals. Online faculty members work collaboratively in a supportive academic environment, partnering with student advising and the academic team to ensure that each student has support, tools and resources they need to be successful.

The application process

Adjunct positions are offered to qualified applicants who live in and are authorized to work in the United States. We are currently accepting applications for adjunct instructors to teach in all disciplines* to support programmatic and enrollment growth. If you hold the minimum of a master s degree, you are welcome to submit your application for consideration.

  1. Review course descriptions.
  2. Complete the online instructor application and attach your CV for review. You will receive an auto-reply once you have successfully submitted your application.
  3. Although we are accepting applications in all disciplines we may not have an immediate need for someone with your background and experience. Your information will stay on file and active. You will receive a request for transcripts if we have an opening that is a match for you.
  4. Once transcripts are received, you will be contacted by a member of the faculty recruitment team.
  5. Currently we do not have a login feature to check the status of an application or update an existing record. Your submission will stay active until you are notified by email.

* All candidates must consent to a background check after successfully completing new instructor training. Candidates applying to teach nursing courses are required to hold a N.H. Nursing License or be licensed in a state that is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact.

New Instructor Training

New instructor training is a blend of SNHU instructor expectations, best practices for teaching online, pedagogy, creating student-centered learning communities, and effectively using SNHU academic technologies. Our three-week new instructor training program is delivered asynchronously, in an online cohort format, using Blackboard Learn 9.1. Online training facilitators provide feedback to trainees to guide instructors in their acclimation to the SNHU philosophy of fostering student learning, engagement, and success. The time commitment for trainees varies, as candidates come to training with varying levels of familiarity with using Learning Management Systems (such as Moodle, Blackboard or Canvas) and varying levels of classroom experience. Most trainees report that they spend between 7 and 12 hours per week on the training, though some admit that they enjoy the camaraderie within the training and, therefore, spend more time in the discussions. Training is unpaid. Trainees are considered candidates for the role of adjunct instructor until they have successfully met SNHU s expectations for training, and are added to the teaching roster. New instructor training is the final step of the recruitment process, ensuring that all new instructors are technically and pedagogically competent in the classroom, and hold to the SNHU values of guiding and supporting our students success. It is required for all new COCE instructors.

Ongoing Training & Professional Development

To benefit our learning community, existing instructors are offered ongoing training professional development opportunities. These opportunities include (but are not limited to) required training for system and learning resource upgrades and additions.

Teaching assignments

Please be aware that teaching assignments may be temporary, part-time and/or on-call and may be immediate or as needed, and we are not able to guarantee regular teaching appointments.

When scheduling for an upcoming term, potential instructors will be sent an assignment letter with a specified date in which the letter must be returned. If the assignment is not accepted by the specified date in the letter or if the letter is received after the date, the course will be re-assigned to another instructor.

Expectation of adjuncts

At SNHU, our instructors are instrumental in ensuring that students are successful in the classroom. This adherence to student success translates to instructors working individually with struggling students by providing them 1:1 support, collaborating with student advising and academic teams as well as giving course feedback. SNHU instructors are required to respond to student inquiries within 24 hours and be fully active in the online classroom five out of seven days per week.

Term length

All five graduate terms are 10 weeks in duration.

Most of the six undergraduate terms are 9 weeks. You will be informed of term start dates in your Assignment Notification.

Compensation and pay schedule

The compensation is $2,200 per 9-week undergraduate course, and $2,500 per 10-week graduate course.

Nursing has a separate compensation structure.

Undergraduate and graduate instructors are paid biweekly. Adjuncts are considered a W2 employee.

Course information

Most courses have 25 students. Some writing intensive courses, such as Eng/Lit are capped at 22 students per class. In order for the class to run, there needs to be a minimum of 8 students registered for the class.

All exams are online, without the need for proctors. We also discourage the use of timed exams due to technical difficulties that may occur for students overseas and our military population.

All courses are asynchronous, as most of our students are located around the globe.

Faculty may include OPTIONAL synchronous elements to their courses (Office Hours, Skype, etc.), but will need to accommodate students in different time zones.

Course design

We build our courses in advance so there are common outcomes/objectives for all students taking a particular course and so the instructor can focus their time and attention on their students, working with individuals who need additional assistance and adding their own resources as they see appropriate to enhance student comprehension.

We rely on our faculty to bring our courses to life. Faculty involvement is essential to keeping these courses fresh and relevant. We expect faculty to evaluate and give feedback for students engaging on discussion boards, monitor automated assessments to identify content areas where students are struggling, and manually review written assessments like papers, journals or presentations.

We also offer our faculty the opportunity to have input into the update cycle of the courses. We encourage faculty to use our design feedback system to offer praise, to pinpoint content areas that may need updating or a different perspective, and, most importantly, to notify us of any errors that need to be fixed immediately.

Course materials

Subject matter experts together with the academic team and the instructional design team determine the required text(s) for each course.

As the instructor, you have the option to incorporate supplementary reading materials in your class such as free online web sources and/or the Shapiro Library, within your weekly announcements. Web based materials and resources can often add richness to your course and are free for the student. This is also a way for you the instructor to personalize your course and incorporate creativity.

Textbooks are determined for the academic year; however editions are subject to change at the discretion of the publisher. Please wait until you receive your assignment letter before ordering your free text desk copy from the publisher.

Adjunct faculty is responsible for obtaining their own textbook(s) and any available ancillaries from the publisher. Each term, a book list will be posted in the Adjunct Faculty section of my.SNHU along with directions for ordering and publisher contact information.

Subject Matter Expert Opportunities

SNHU is continually developing new courses and programs that include opportunities for Subject Matter Experts (SME), such as outcomes and assessment workshops, course revisions, course authoring and redevelopments. Many of these courses are not yet listed in the Courses Offered link, but are open to applicants and listed on our application. View more information about the scope and responsibilities of these opportunities. If you are interested in being considered for SME work, please indicate this on the application. If we have a need that is a good fit for your background and experience, we will contact you for additional information.
